The wood finish on the side soles on shoes such as the Independence are very nice.

I do not want to color over them with a dark brown or black side dressing. I am instead using a clear shoe cream on the wood finish side of the soles and just using edge dressing at the very lower area of the sole.

Do you have any recommended approach and products to maintain the side soles without coloring over the wood oak?

Choosing which Heel and Sole Edge Dressing to use depends upon the color of the welt and heel base of your shoe, and not the actual color of the upper, although the welt and upper often match. When using the correct color dressing, you should not have to worry about any discoloration of your welt or heel base occurring. We offer four colors – Brown, Black, Neutral, and Chili – in our heel and sole edge dressing.

Our Neutral (also referred to as Natural) is recommended for shoes with a lighter colored welt, like that of the Amok shoe style and most Walnut colored shoes.

Chili Heel and Sole Edge Dressing is recommended for those welts with a darker coloring, similar to our Randolph style in Chili. Most styles in Chili leather also use Chili Heel and Sole Edge Dressing.

Black Heel and Sole Edge Dressing is recommended for shoes with a completely black welt; for example, the Park Avenue in Black Custom Calf or Merlot Calfskin. Most Black and Merlot/Burgundy styles use Black Heel and Sole Edge Dressing.

Most Brown and Dark Brown Burnished Calf shoe styles use brown Heel and Sole Edge Dressing.

Cordovan Shoe Care Cream is specifically formulated to maintain the rich color of cordovan leathers.

For calfskin leathers, we recommend using Allen Edmonds Conditioner/Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. Also, by applying a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish – which comes in a variety of colors including Walnut – with a cloth or horsehair dauber, you will be able to achieve a desired shine.

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

With more and more customers preferring the convenience of online shopping, we've developed easy-to-use tools to help ensure you take accurate measurements and get the proper fit with your shoes. To get a truly professional fitting, we recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Master Fitter at any one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, this Shoe Fit Guide is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit.

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.
