Waxed leathers, like that of the Lubbock, require a very specific type of leather care. This style can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue as necessary. Using a soft cloth, apply Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion which has been specially formulated for these leathers. You may also use Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap which cleans all smooth leather shoes while restoring the leather’s natural oils. Allow shoes to completely air dry and follow by buffing gently with a soft cloth to bring out their shine.

We do not recommend using our Premium Shoe Polish or Carnauba Wax on our rougher leathers, as it can affect the finish of the shoe.

Based on color and individual preference, Allen Edmonds Shoe Cream, Shoe Polish or Carnauba Wax can be used to polish shoes. Shoe Polish is best used for regular polishing and achieving a lustrous glow; Carnauba Wax is known for imparting a richer glow to fine leathers; our Allen Edmonds Shoe Cream, which is used for darker colors like Brown rather than Walnut, is formulated to renew the color of your calfskin shoes.

Either option will work well. Ultimately, what each individual chooses is their own decision; we encourage customers to purchase and use what they feel most comfortable with.

We recommend hand washing the Allen Edmonds Cotton Flannel Polishing Cloth in cold water to prevent any dyes on the cloth from running. Keep in mind, it is also a good idea to use a different polishing cloth for each new colored polish to prevent cross-contamination between leathers.

The Delray, Park Avenue, Lauderdale, McAllister, and McClain styles all feature Calfskin Leather, either custom calf or burnished calfskin. The Yuma features Brown Bison Leather and the Cascade style, a Saddlehorn Leather.

For calfskin leathers, we recommend using our Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner and Premium Shoe Polish in the appropriate color. Start by using Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove any surface area residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, follow by wiping shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry. Finally, remove any excess polish by brushing with a horsehair shine brush and buff to a desired shine.

The Yuma in Brown Bison Leather and Cascade in Saddlehorn Leather should be cared for using our Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion. These types of leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove any dirt and residue. Using a soft cloth, apply Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion which has been specially formulated for these leathers and allow shoes to completely air dry.

To avoid excess polish on your shoes, we recommend removing any excess build up by brushing your shoes with a horsehair shine brush followed by buffing with a soft, cotton polishing cloth. It is also good to allow shoes to completely air dry before wear.

If transferring polish onto your pants is a concern, we also offer Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion which is toneless.

Choosing which Heel and Sole Edge Dressing to use depends upon the color of the welt and heel base of your shoe, and not the actual color of the upper, although the welt and upper often match. When using the correct color dressing, you should not have to worry about any discoloration of your welt or heel base occurring. We offer four colors – Brown, Black, Neutral, and Chili – in our heel and sole edge dressing.

Our Neutral (also referred to as Natural) is recommended for shoes with a lighter colored welt, like that of the Amok shoe style and most Walnut colored shoes.

Chili Heel and Sole Edge Dressing is recommended for those welts with a darker coloring, similar to our Randolph style in Chili. Most styles in Chili leather also use Chili Heel and Sole Edge Dressing.

Black Heel and Sole Edge Dressing is recommended for shoes with a completely black welt; for example, the Park Avenue in Black Custom Calf or Merlot Calfskin. Most Black and Merlot/Burgundy styles use Black Heel and Sole Edge Dressing.

Most Brown and Dark Brown Burnished Calf shoe styles use brown Heel and Sole Edge Dressing.
