When we asked Jim Dayton, an award-winning architect and protégé of Frank Gehry, to design our new retail store prototype, we never planned for him to create a shoe for us. But, by using authentic materials in his store design like Wisconsin red birch and touches of the cork that cushions our shoes, he did such a great job capturing our company's personality that we asked him to bring the same aesthetic sensibilities to a pair of shoes. And we're sure glad we did. In creating this seven-eyelet blucher boot, Dayton used his architect's sharp-eye to perfectly balance the silhouette of the rounded, full toe with the extended calf-high upper. Similarly, the orange leather lining, toe medallion and perforations on the back-stay and wingtip combine to accentuate the boot's heartier features, like the Butyl leather sole, and create a blueprint for both elegance and strength. Tucked under blue jeans or a blue suit, they present a stylish profile while providing the type of ankle stability and support not usually found in a dress shoe. A truly original boot made by a one-of-a-kind artisan, the Dalton is the perfect foundation on which to build a great outfit.

Not the review I had planned to do When I got the Dalton, I was expecting something on the level of the Park Ave / Strand so this was pretty disappointing. I actually put off writing this review until I was certain I wouldn't see any more improvement. Visually the shoes are beautiful to look at, and the construction is top notch - not that I would try it, but they would probably survive snow and ice without much issue. When I initially tried these on, I thought they felt a little stiff - not overly stiff but what I thought was normal for a brand new dress boot. I was a little concerned with the fit since I had only bought 65 last shoes but they seemed to fit pretty well. Anyway, being the glutton for punishment that I am, I decided to wear them out of the box for a 6 hour drive followed by a significant amount of walking. A few issues arose - I developed some real nasty blisters on both feet, and I noticed this painful pressure point building up on the instep of the right boot, which became so painful that I sort of had to walk with my left foot and drag the right foot along. I loved the Dalton's enough that I wasn't going to give up on them yet. When I broke in my Redwing Beckmans, which was absolutely miserable, I wore them for weeks and weeks, walking and sitting, for 12 hours a day with the heaviest wool socks I could find. I bit the bullet, got out the hiking socks, and wore them with the Dalton's for around a two week period. At this point, the heels still bother me but haven't caused more blisters. I still notice the pressure point in the right boot but it doesn't kill me like it initially did. The leather still feels extremely stiff and still makes squeaking noises when I walk. Maybe more break-in is needed, but I'm surprised that AE shoes would need such a long break in period - that hasn't been my experience in general. I was truly disappointed with these - they are advertised as AE's flagship dress boot, but they far and above my least comfortable pair. With the cold weather, I still wear them for business casual but each time I have to deal with the issues I described above. I never got to see the McAdam, maybe that would have been better, not sure. My park aves, McTavish and Neumoks are just so much more comfortable than these. December 15, 2014
Great look; poor comfort These are great looking boots. The quality of the leather is what one would expect of AE. However, serious discomfort in the tongue of the shoe. I'm guessing this is due to a recent decision to split the tongue into two pieces of leather, placing a seam over a tender portion of the foot. If I had known of this change when I ordered, I may have reconsidered my purchase. As it stands, I'm hoping further break-in will correct what I consider a design flaw. December 14, 2014
Look good This boot is the best. I owned Uggs, Timberland, Mezlan, Cohaan boot these can't compete to Allen Edmonds. December 12, 2014
Excellent dress boot 9.5 E true to fit out of box. Looked excellent with blue suits I wore on recent business trip. December 9, 2014

I received my new pair of Dalton boots. While they are handsome, the tongue is unexpectedly different from the images shown; it appears to be crafted from two pieces of leather stitched together mid-height. Is this a recent change in construction?

I prefer when boots have some height to the heel (1 and 1/2 inches). So my first question is: what is the height on the heel as normally made? My second question is: can the boot be custom made with a different heel hight?

Answer:
I saw the Dalton in the store the other day. VERY nice boot. The heal (in fact the whole sole) is the exact same as on the McAlister shoe. Probably closer to 3/4 inch. With dress pants on you'd think you had a wingtip shoe on... doubt they's do a custom heal.... Of course you could buy a pair and take them to a cobbler to have a different heal put on....probably cost you another $100 though.

Answer:
The heel measures ½” from the bottom of the heel to the bottom of the sole. At this time, we do not offer customization on heels.

Any chance this boot will become available with the dainite sole? I love this boot and the leather soles but would love to also have a pair for bad weather/ice and I think the dainite would do very nicely.

Answer:
You can customize the sole to many different options, including the danite. Just FYI - doing so will render them non-refundable, so just be sure on the fit. I got mine with full vibram lug - excellent traction but people have commented that I look like I am going hiking. Mini lug might have been better.

I currently have the MacAllister and Mora 2.0 on size 9E. They both are a bit tight on my right pinky toe. I've read that the Dalton's toe box is a bit wider than other shoes. Is it wider than the two shoes mentioned? Would you recommend me ordering the shoe with an E or EEE?

I've recently moved to the UK so I won't be able to get to a store to try on the boot. Requesting for a London store!

Hi, I love the look of these Dalton's but was wondering about the sole choices. I see I could choose a V-trap option ($40) extra. Is there also an option to choose the Dainite sole? Are there other sole options? I have a Chelsea dress boot with leather soles, and chukka boots with vibram rubber sole...was kind of looking for a lace up dress boot that I could still wear with a suit but also pair down with jeans and sportcoat or even more casual look. Was thining a thin rubber sole would maybe make the boot more versatile with my wardrobe? I guess I could always et them recrafted and go with the original leather sole. Thoughts?

Answer:
I wear an 8.5 in Park Avenue & Strand. I found that my new Daltons run very true to size. You'll notice a bit more room in the toe box, as they are boots. This difference in the lasts is described on the website in the section on lasts. Order your regular size.

Answer:
The Strand is constructed on the 65 last the longest in length of all of our lasts; best for a long, narrow look; and often the best fit for those with high arches. The Dalton is constructed on the 511 last which is similar to the 97 last from heel to the ball of the foot, yet with a more rounded, fuller fitting toe. The 511 last is used in many of our boots because of the added room in the toe box. Each style will fit differently based on individual foot shape and the last that each style is constructed on, for this reason we highly recommend getting a proper fit by visiting a master fitter in one of our retail stores.

However, if you are unable to visit one of our stores for a professional fitting, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Please feel free to contact our online customer service team directly at eservice@allenedmonds.com or 1-877-817-7615 (Mon-Fri 7:00AM-8PM CST) if you require further assistance.

Hi,
I have 5 pair of allen edmonds (four on the 5 last and one pair of Leeds on the 1 Last). My 5 last shoes are all size 9D and my Leeds are 9.5D. They all fit perfectly (despite the different sizes), should I order the Daltons in 9.5D?
Thank you

Answer:
Both the Dalton and the Leeds are constructed on the same 511 last; as a result, these styles will feature similar support as well as a similar fit. We suggest trying the Dalton in the size 9.5D.

However, keep in mind that each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape. The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, remember that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.
