Overview

Norwich - Plain-toe Monk Strap Men's Dress Shoes by Allen Edmonds

While the Rough Collection was primarily inspired by the roughhewn landscapes of the American West, this model, which is similar to our Boston, has decidedly a New England pedigree. A testament to the Yankee strength of character, this shoe's impressive double oak leather sole and storm make the Norwich perfect for someone with a dynamic personality. Such a hearty base is balanced perfectly by the enduring fashion of the colonial-style monk strap and silver buckle, both of which work to highlight bold wardrobe choices like a wide-chalk stripe or grey flannel suit. Crafted on the 222-Last for an elongated toe and slightly higher instep, the Norwich is sure to fit as well as it looks, making it a worthy representative of one of America's oldest and most storied regions.

Great Looking Show, Most Uncomfortable I have over 15 pair of AE's and these are by far the most uncomfortable pair in the stable. The Norwich in brown is absolutely beautiful - it gets lots of compliments. However I cannot make it through an entire work day much less a business trip in comfort and I've had them for over a year now. The Norwich runs narrow - I've had my local AE store put them on the stretcher and I've applied leather conditioner numerous times but just can't seem to get them to work. They've almost become a challenge trying to get them to break, but I'm just about to the point to hang them up, which is unfortunate because they look so good. June 18, 2013
Looks good, but very uncomfortable These are a great looking pair of shoes, no questions about that (especially the burnished brown color). However, they are nowhere as comfortable as the park aves, and are still causing blisters on my toes and heels even after a couple months. As others have mentioned, they tend to squeak and still remain very stiff. I now only wear them when I am willing to suffer for the sake of vanity, but those times are few and far between. Mixed feelings: beautiful, painful, bad service I fell in love with my AE loafers two years ago and finally invested in the Norwich as my day-to-day city shoe. The Norwich is beautiful and sturdily constructed. Aesthetically, it suits all my contextual uses for quality shoes: business, on stage (classical musician), urban casual, academic.. Unfortunately, it has proven to be a very uncomfortable shoe that is taking WAY too long to break in. I've now been wearing the Norwich for over two months on a near daily basis and it is still very stiff and painful, although it is finally getting better. It is not a fit issue: I had my feet measure multiple times, tried several models to test out the lasts, etc. It is simply an exceptionally stiff, rigid shoe, particularly at the back of the heel. Hopefully that also translates into extreme sturdiness of construction (that is certainly my impression so far, judging by weight alone). I would give the shoe a 3.5-4 star rating, but rounded down to 3 because of the sub-par customer service at the NYC Allen Edmonds branch where I purchased the shoe. The head salesman was very pushy and impatient, trying to get me out of there as quickly as possible, discouraging my trying out a lot of styles and sizes. This seemed odd to me, since I had made it clear that I was committed to purchasing Allen Edmonds shoes and that it was just a matter of finding the right ones for me. I made a point of inquiring as to the benefit of having protective rubber put on the soles, as I do a lot of walking in the city. I was strongly discouraged from doing so and convinced to just walk away with the shoes as they were. Well, within a few days of urban walking, the soles and heel began to look thoroughly pockmarked with craters, and I could constantly feel little pebbles and debris getting stuck underfoot. I took the shoes into my cobbler to have protective rubber installed, although it was already too late. My first heel/sole replacement will likely have to occur sooner than if I had had the rubber installed in the first place. When making a $400 investment in shoes, I would expect AE's salesmen to make sure that their clients are well-informed and carefully advised on best practices in order to ensure lifelong brand commitment. That, unfortunately, was not my experience... April 26, 2013
Love the design - but serious flaws The shoes look great and I love the way they look with all types of trousers and clothing styles. However they are SQUEAKYYYY and take forever to break in. I have had mine for 2 months and it has taken this long to stop getting blisters on the outer part of my left ankle where the edge of the shoe hits. The squeakiness though continues and is because the strap and the tongue are always in relative motion and rubbing against each other. The heel is precariously attached to the sole and I can see some separation taking place which I address with a light hammering - something which I am not terribly pleased to have to do with an AE shoe. Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

Allen Edmonds has always been regarded for offering a wide range of sizes (6 – 16) and widths (AAA – EEE) to fit virtually any foot, making us a highly sought after shoe brand. We do not, however, manufacture shoes in an EEEE width.

Yes, an individual can request a rubber sole be put on their shoe as a part of our Recrafting services in place of a leather sole, and vice versa. However, the selection of which rubber soles is limited to certain styles.

Products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The Cordovan Norwich style is manufactured on our welted 2-Last (2-222) which has an elongated toe with a slightly higher instep. The 2-Last is very similar to our 8-Last (108). By selecting shoes manufactured on the last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit.

Typically the same size can be ordered in all of our shoes. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape. The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

The brand new brown Norwich seems to be bronze color, but the last year's models all seemed to be silver in color. Am I wrong here?

Info about the 2-222 last

There are several shoes, including the Norwich, which appear to be on the 2-222 last but when I click on the "learn all about lasts" link on the product page, the resultant info has no entry for the 2-222 last. Will you be adding info about the 2-222 last to that page soon?

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The 2-Last (222) is one of our old lasts which we no longer use on any of our new styles nor reference online; we do still offer a number of styles online in the 2-Last though, which can be found here: http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonlin...?.

The 2-Last has an elongated toe with a slightly higher instep, and is most similar to our 8-Last (108), which also has an elongated forepart, but with a tapered and flatter toe.

How does the Norwich compare to the Garner?

Customer avatar
by

I still own a pair of Garner shoes (great shoe by the way) and recently bought the Boston (a horrible shoe) but now see another black buckle shoe (Norwich) and am hoping to not make another mistake (Boston squeaks when walking and seems to have a slope from the heel to toe) which is different (and less comfortable) than the Garner.

If you can also tell me the "shoe last" for the Garner that would be great!

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

We are sorry you are unhappy with your purchase of the Boston – the “squeaking” noise you are hearing is sometimes caused by the leather lining of our shoes rubbing against leather on the outside of the upper. This noise does not indicate a problem with the construction of the shoe; it is natural for two types of leathers which are layered upon one another to make noise. Applying a talcum powder can help to reduce this.

The Garner was made on our old 5-Last (345) which is most similar to our current 1-Last due to its more rounded, fuller fitting toe. The Norwich is made on our 2-Last (222) which similarly has a slightly higher instep, but also has a more elongated toe.

You can learn more about our different lasts by selecting “All About Lasts” under Shoes 101 at the bottom of the page, or by clicking here: http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonlin....

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The Norwich is not offered in a "C" width.

The last that this shoe is manufactured on is a narrow last. If you normally take a "C" width, you will want to try the "D' width in this style. Just make sure that you try the shoes on a carpet surface. That way if they do not fit they would be returnable.
