Delray with Combination Tap sole - Split-toe Lace-up Oxford Men's Dress Shoes by Allen Edmonds

This shoe style is also available in additional colors with a Leather sole or our Custom sole option.

The literal translation of Delray is "of the king", a fitting moniker given how our loyal Allen Edmonds customer has pledged his allegiance to this model, making it a top-seller year in and year out. Part of its appeal is based on the dramatic interplay between the tapered split toe and the plug overlay, two unique features rarely found on a quality dress shoe. This five-eyelet blucher is further set apart from our other formal styles because it is designed on the 8-Last to give it an elongated forepart that corresponds well with all manner of professional attire. Whether your daily outfit includes a suit or dress slacks, we assure you that the Delray will quickly become the crown jewel of your wardrobe.

A leather sole has a special feel and traditional look that can't be beat. But in certain inclement weather situations or for guys whose jobs involve lots of time on their feet, it can be good to have the traction and stability that only a rubber sole can add. So you don't have to choose between these two options, we decided to fuse them into the tap sole, a leather sole with V-tread rubber inserts on the forefoot and heel. Polished yet practical for the ultimate presence and performance, the tap sole will have you walking tall, and that's no song and dance.

Runs Narrow: Be absolutely sure of fit I have a wider foot that I occasionally accomodate by going up 1/2 size on a normal width. That is a bad decision with this shoe. It runs longer and narrower than you think. Even thought I tried 3 separate size-width combinations in the store, I can tell that this shoe is not going to "break in" well and be a go-to shoe in my closet. (I probably should have worn them around the house to be sure, but who has time for that?) I'm disappointed, because this is a really handsome and versatile-looking shoe. I've been considering switching from Alden to AE because I think AE has a better selection. Not sure I made the right call, since comfort is a "price of admission" issue, especially at that price. PS -- I gave it a 2 rather than a 1 because the salesman was accommodating and helpful, and I deserve part of the blame for the purchase decision. May 12, 2013
Not the usual Allen Edmonds comfort I'm a frequent Allen Edmonds customer, having bought four pairs of dress shoes in the last 12 months. My Park Aves, Fifth Aves and Strands are so comfortable, I don't even take them off when I get home from work. The Del Rays are a different story. Even though I got these in my fitted size, the shoe squeezes the top of my foot, cuts off circulation to my big toe, and pinches my little toe. I've been giving them several months to break in, but I still come home with blisters and numb toes after a long day on my feet. Worse still, the insole seems to be made of a different, less breathable material than my other AE's. My feet sweat in the shoes, something that doesn't happen with my Park Aves. Even if you've been fitted, make sure you try these shoes on for a good long time before committing to them. I wish I had. April 16, 2013
Most Comfortable Shoe In My Allen Edmonds Stable By far the most comfortable shoe in my AE stable from the first day on, in fact I found it to wear so well I went out and bought another pair in Chili (have Black) so I could wear the shoe with lighter colored slacks. The classic style will never go out of style so you will get many many years of comfortable wear...not to say you will not have to get the shoes recrafted once in a while to the get the 20 plus years I have on some of my AE shoes. Very good shoe Great shoe- wel made and fits great- I have a wide foot and its tough to get shoes that fit. The sales woman at the store on 6th ave did a great job helping me get the right fit. First time I wore them they felt great very little break in period. Expensive but if you care for them they will last a long time. February 15, 2013

Struggle with fitting into my Delray - do I have options?

Customer avatar

I own a Delray (it was a gift) and I love the look and the quality. However, they are very difficult to wear for a long day because they are too narrow at my toes. I thought they might soften a bit and become more comfortable, but now I don't want to wear them because my feet hurt for a couple days after I walk more than a little bit in them. I have had them for a year or so and have worn them 12-18 times.

Is there an adjustment that can be made or should I replace them? What models should I choose from given that this last seems to be not a good fit for me?

Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. Depending on the age and condition of the shoe, leathers may stretch and wear over long periods of time. If you are unhappy with the fit of your Delray’s, we recommend contacting our customer service center at cacmail@allenedmonds.com or 1-800-235-2348 (Mon-Fri 7:00AM-6PM CST); they will be better able to help recommend you a more appropriate size.

I have a Delray (chili split toe) that's woven on the top of the shoe. I believe the style is 3160. (There is also another number 56703). Has this style been discontinued and replaced by the 1298 Burnished Calf? Your shoe care reference guide is useful but I want to be sure I'm selecting the correct polish and cleaner. Many thanks.

Can you provide a shoe with a removable insole? I'd like to use my orthotics.

Also, what style for a dress shoe in $300- $350 range would you recommend given my wish to replace insole? I like the Del-Rey.

Thanks,

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

We only manufacture a select number of styles with our removable footbed. As well, Allen Edmonds Replacement Orthotic Insoles are designed for a select number of styles which feature removable orthotics. You can find the complete Allen Edmonds Orthotic Collection of shoes by clicking here: http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonlin...?.

However, if the shoe is fit large enough, these inserts can be used in almost any of our shoes. Depending on your foot shape and preferred fit, typically we recommend ordering a size up. The best way to get a proper fit with your orthotic inserts is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The term “plug overlay” references the vamp area of a shoe, which is the portion covering the instep of the shoe and sometimes extending over the toe.

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The Delray is manufactured on our 8-Last (108) which features an elongated forepart with a tapered and flatter toe; this last is very similar to our old 2-Last (222). Meanwhile, the 4-Last (234) is fairly similar to the 7-Last in that it is the best fit for the average foot, but has a slightly more squared toe. By selecting shoes manufactured on the same last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit.

Typically the same size can be ordered in all of our shoes. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape. The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Answer:
Any good shoe repair shop carries shoe cream in many hues and values (color and light/dark) and matching the cream to the shoe is a snap. Use cream and not a waxy polish to protect and preserve your shoes. Shoe polish, a wax, usually has petroleum distillates that can dry shoe leather.

I love the color of my brown delrays, but the dark brown polish seems to be darkening the shoe more than I would like. Would the saddle brown polish be an appropriate choice?

Answer:
Are your Delrays Brown or Chili? Mine are Chili and the AE chili polish works great as does the AE edge dressing for this shoe. Go to your AE store or call customer service and they can hook you up with the original equipment manuafacturer (OEM) polish and edge dressing.

Answer:
Thank you for your interest.

The Saddle Brown polish is a shade lighter than the Dark Brown polish. While we typically recommend the Dark Brown for most Brown and Brown Burnished shoes, if you prefer a lighter color Saddle Brown would be appropriate.

Is a Delray 7EEE longer than a special order Ashton 7EEE? If I order a Delray, I would want a rubber sole. Will the rubber sole on the Delray affect the width?

Answer:
Thank you for your interest.

The Ashton and Delray shoes are constructed on different lasts. The Delray last (welted 8-108 Last) has a more elongated toe than the Ashton (welted 8-678 Last) so the Delray shoe itself will appear longer. The Ashton last is also deeper than others in order to accommodate the removable orthotic insert. Every foot is different, but the Ashton tends to be a better fit for the average foot.

Ordering a custom shoe with a rubber sole will not change the fit of the shoe.

The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused, accompanied by the packing slip and is part of our current catalog. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition. Unfortunately custom ordered shoes are non-returnable.
