I was in an AE store and the saleswoman told me about a big sale that AE was having in a few days on cordovan shoes. The deal was that they would be $400, but the catch was that you were limited to what was in stock at one of the stores (no factory orders). Thought it sounded like a good deal so I ordered a pair on the first day of the sale. From what I can tell, this big sale was just a gimmick so that the stores could unload any pairs they had in stock that they’d had trouble selling. When my shoes arrived, the color was way off. One was two completely different shades of burgundy and the other shoe was a third shade of burgundy. They also had a number of minor imperfections. Brought them back to the store and they ordered a replacement pair from another store. I asked them to check the shoes out before sending them and they said that the shoes look great, but they had been “tried on.” This was an understatement. The shoes had considerable scuffing on the soles. “Used” would have been a more accurate description. There were also a number of small imperfections, but I just decided to live with it. Today I wore them for the first time and after a full day in these shoes my feet are in bad shape. I can’t begin to tell you how much I regret this purchase.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Moving from your typical rubber-soled department store dress shoes to the Macneils was an incredible change. I bought a pair in rough brown leather, perfect for my exceedingly casual appearance. The quality is outstanding and fits great. My only gripes are a bit on comfort, which I trust will improve over time, and a few minor imperfections on the leather. Having picked them up at a discounted price, though, I'm not the slightest bit unhappy.

I own four AE shoes and love them all. However, my first love, which was a pair of MacNeils, has turned on me. I have worn them only for church for the past 5 years and have been meticulous with my care of them. I always wear overshoes when it is wet, store them with shoe trees, and use AE leather lotion and shoe polish. I was hoping they would last 20-30 years.
Over the last two years the inside bottom of the shoe, which is made of leather, started to curl by the toes causing great discomfort when I walked. I tried to use inserts but they caused tightness in the fit. When I returned the shoes to the AE store the customer service rep took my shoe and sanded the inside of the shoe with sandpaper to fix the problem. That was nice of her and I thanked her- even though it didn't totally fix the problem. I may have to do more sandpapering.
My greatest concern is that I was told that basically--- I bought a bad shoe. She said that the MacNeil from prior to 2006 was made with a lacquer in the leather making process causing the shoe to have a better shine. The drawback is that it doesn't allow the foot to breathe properly and it can cause the inside bottom of the shoe, which is leather, to crack and the outside of the shoe also to crack. I was told that when I need them recrafted I would be better off buying a new pair.
I understand that there was nothing the customer service rep could do because years ago AE made a bad shoe. Unfortunately the shoe I thought I could wear until I retired will soon be retired. Future buyers need not beware--- only buyers before 2006.
No, I do not recommend this product.

After 23 years as a loyal Allen Edmonds customer I finally had the opportunity to purchase the MacNeil in Burgundy Shell Cordovan. What a wonderful shoe. These past few months I have added 3 new pair to my collection and thought I found the perfect shoe in the McTavish in black - then the Cordovans arrived. These will be my top shoe for daily business dress wear. I find the Cordovan leather to be an entirely new experience from my calfskin and cowhide AEs, and I love the fit and feel.
Next will be a black Cordovan with my other black dress AEs moving to the back of the closet.
Treat your feet! Go for the Cordovans!

The MacNeil is manufactured on our 7-Last (97) which is the best fit for the average foot, and also lays flatter in the toe area; meanwhile, the Strand is manufactured on our 5-Last (65) and is the longest in length of our lasts and fits best on a long, narrow foot. By selecting shoes manufactured on the last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit.

Typically the same size can be ordered in all of our shoes. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape. The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

To get a truly professional fitting, we recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Master Fitter at any one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, this Shoe Fit Guide is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit.

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.

CARING FOR CALFSKIN & GRAIN LEATHERS
Use Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Carnauba Wax Polish, Premium Polish or Shoe Cream with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry. Remove excess polish by brushing with a horsehair shine brush and buff to a desired shine.

SHELL CORDOVAN
To remove any natural oils or residue in areas where the shoe flexes and to maintain the leather?s quality, simply brush the leather with a horsehair shine brush or wipe with a cotton flannel polishing cloth. Our 360° Goodyear welted footwear is characterized by its durability, comfort and fit. The manufacturing process consists of over 200 steps. The process begins with the cutting of the leather. Patterned dies are used, and pieces are cut based on the style. Skilled handsewers then stitch the vamps, plugs, foxes and quarters together to form the uppers. Next, each last is selected according to the style and size. The insole is attached to the bottom of the last. Then, the upper is pulled over the last with great care to make certain that seams are straight. The 360° welt is stitched around the perimeter of the outsole, eliminating the need for the rigid metal shank that is found in most other shoe brands. A heated cork layer between the insole and outsole allows each foot to form its own uniquely shaped print for true custom comfort. Finally, finishing touches are applied, and shoes are inspected to ensure perfection before being packaged.

Allen Edmonds 360° welted shoes are so well-made that we can actually return them to their original glory with our exclusive Recrafting process. Using the original manufacturing process, we literally rebuild worn footwear from the bottom up.

When you send your shoes in for Recrafting, our experts will first free the uppers from worn soles. Stretched over the proper last, the original uppers become shoes again through our unique manufacturing process. After your shoes are re-welted, re-corked, soled and heeled, old finishes are carefully removed from the leather and new polishes and waxes applied. In about four weeks, shoes that look surprisingly new are returned to you.
