Shoe building is a lost art. Today, factories stamp out millions of shoes every year. All are produced with economy in mind. Lowest cost and grade possible, in order to maximize profits by selling in volume. With Allen Edmonds, you still get a shoe that is crafted with the wearer in mind.
These shoes are built with the intention of durability. You will own these shoes forever. Your job is to take care of the leather. In this case, suede. Before you wear them, apply a liberal coat of Nikwax Nubuck & Suede Spray-On Footwear Treatment, clean regularly with Nylon Suede Cleaning Brush and Suede and Nubuck Leather Cleaner Liquid, and reapply Nikwax as needed. Or use the product line that Allen Edmonds offers through it's website and retail stores.
Okay, so what you have here is a suede version of the Allen Edmonds Men's Malvern Boot. Leather lined for comfort. I often wear these without socks. Three eyelets that securely lace the shoe to the top of the foot, and just high enough to protect and support your ankles. Good-Year welted with a lug sole to handle any and every environment. This is the casual hiking boot version of a dress shoe. Reminiscent of the Rocky Polishable Dress Leather Chukka (005018) and Bates® Bates(tm) Leather Padded Collar Chukkas police officers are first issued in the police academy. Engineered for pounding the beat for the next 25 years of your life. Don't be shy and only wear them with casual Friday khakis. I take these shoes outdoors.
They are made for adventure. Take them on the trail with you. Mine have gone camping, hiking, fishing, 4X4 rock crawling, as well as cross town treks on public transportation. This is an essential shoe for the urban warrior in places like New York, Seattle, and San Francisco where you do a lot of walking and may have to fight your way in and out of tough neighborhoods.

I had high hopes for this shoe. It would've been my first nice winter boot, and my first AE in general, and I was quite tickled in anticipation of trying it on after driving across the Canada-USA border to pick it up.
Unfortunately, whereas the shoe fits well enough, it has more than enough defects to have been classified as a "second" and not as a standard quality shoe. There are innumerable instances of loose threads, even on the channel stitching, and let's not talk about the small chunks missing from the sides of the outsoles. Furthermore, while the toe is supposed to be burnished, it seems like someone did it only on the left shoe and left the right shoe untouched. However, the worst offense would be the atrocious cutting of the suede near the right heel; the upper edge of it is wavy and asymmetrical unlike the left heel which has a level upper edge.
Moving onto the good stuff: the leather lining has a very nice hand, and the rubber outsole has a practical tread for all-season usage.
Stylistically, I'm iffy about the two different types of suede used on this shoe. The piece that makes up the toe has a very short nap and is close to what most people would think suede looks and feels like. The piece around the heel is extremely rugged and has a very tall, loose nap. It's a very incongruous match if you are examining it closely.
As far as fit goes compared to the 5 last, I cannot say as I do not own any shoes made on the 5 last (yet).
I bought these shoes because of AE's excellent reputation. I know they can do better than this, and it appalls that they could let something like this go.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I purchased the Katmai in November, and after 2 months it has broken in well and is very comfortable to wear. This is my first pair of "non-traditional" AE shoes. I own 8 pair of AE dress shoes, including the Delray, and the Katmai is a great compliment as it can be worn with business casual attire as well as with jeans. Well worth it.
Yes, I recommend this product.

AE sells a spray waterproofer in a can. If you use enough of it, water will bead up and roll off the suede.

I cannot say if the shoe holds up leak-free in submersion, and of course, water can enter around the tongue of the shoe.

While the Katmai has a waterproof rubber sole, the upper is made of natural suede leather and so is not waterproof. We offer Allen Edmonds Spray Waterproofer to provide a layer of protections against dirt and water.

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.
