This is my ninth pair of Allen Edmonds over 25 years. They are the only dress shoe that I will buy and wear. I thought I would try a more casual looking, rubber soled, Allen Edmonds shoe. I tried on several styles and found the Blackhills was to my liking. It is much more stiff than some of the other rubber soled shoes I tried, but it has become softer with wear. I bought the black shoe. I looked at the brown or chili color Blackhills version also. The variation in color and grain was to great to make them look attractive. It looked like two differet shoe styles. I wish the leather could be matched better in the chili colored shoe.

I wear a pretty standard size for all shoes, including the AEs I have owned in the past. These are certainly different as they run long and extremely narrow. They were snug but overly uncomfortable when trying them on, so I figured that they would stretch out after breaking them in. So far that's not the case. As of now it looks like they will become a very expensive door stop.
No, I do not recommend this product.

I wanted something a little dressier than normal but still rugged enough to wear with jeans. This look is perfect. I got a blister on the back of my right heel after 30 minutes of walking. I hope it's a temporary thing.

Hi,

This shoe is on the 5-65 last, which is the same as the Park Ave, Fifth Ave, Strand and others, but there is no C width available in the size selection. Can this shoe be ordered in C width and if so, is the charge still 50.00 extra?

I can fit a B width fine, but I like having the space just in case I want to wear a thicker sock.

The Black Hills is not offered on the same size chart as the Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, and Strand; as a result, this style is only available in widths B, D, E, and EEE. Because it is also not a member of our special makeup program, the Black Hills is limited to sizes and widths currently available online.

I needed a more casual brown shoe than the Ecco shoes I have which are similar in styling to the the Allen Edmunds Granville. I was happy to include the Wilbert in my comparison and bought them in 10.5 which fit my very narrow forefoot and completely unarched foot perfectly. Given that the Black Hills is built on the 5-65 Last, what size would I consider for this shoe?

The Wilbert is constructed on our 1-Last (511), which is similar to the 7-Last from heel to ball in that it is the best fit for the average fit, but has a more rounded, fuller fitting toe. Meanwhile, the Black Hills is constructed on our 5-Last (65) which is the longest in length of our lasts, and best for a long, narrow foot. By selecting shoes manufactured on the same last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit.

Typically the same size and last can be ordered in all of our shoes. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape. The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

I am going to purchase these shoes - my local clothing / shoe store has them in stock. I'm glad I got to see them in person since I think they look better in person than the website photo. Also, I found out I needed a 9D instead of the 9.5D I wear in all my other AE shoes. Something about this last that makes the 9D fit me better. The sales person said everybody that has tried on / purchased the Black Hills has gone down a half size.

I have the Wilbert in 9.5D and it fits great. And I'm going with the 9D on the Black Hills. So I would suggest getting the 10 in this shoe.

Just my experience and I wanted to share it with you.

I would recommend a shoe from our Orthotic Collection which would include the Benton and the Ashton.

Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds. Our 1 last is rounder with a fuller fitting toe. You can find the shoes manufactured on this last by selecting "view all" from the shoes menu. Scroll down until you see "last" on the left hand filter menu and click the plus sign. Then select "welted last 1-511".

You can find out more about the various lasts used in our manufacturing process by viewing the "all about lasts" page at the bottom of our website.

As always, the best way to insure proper fit is to go to an Allen Edmonds Retail store to be professionally fit by one of our Master Fitters.

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

To get a truly professional fitting, we recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Master Fitter at any one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, this Shoe Fit Guide is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit.

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.
