36 Elgin - Cap-toe Lace-up Oxford Men's Casual Shoes by Allen Edmonds Home to some of the oldest and most authentic woolen looms in the world, the town of Elgin, located in the Scottish Highlands, is where our head designer was when the idea for this shoe was born. The name is fitting because this shoe features many of the classic brogue details - perforations, cap toes and medallions - that were invented in Scotland. These decorative touches, which also include pinking and contrast stitching, give this six-eyelet balmoral all the elements you'd expect from an Allen Edmonds shoe. But what sets it apart, and gives that a decidedly American feel, is our use of waxy leather to give it that rustic look reminiscent of treasured saddlebag or well-worn holster. Perfect for the man looking to cultivate his personal style, this model brings just the right amount finesse to the cool look you'll sport when you pair it with casual pants or jeans. A unique offspring of two proud heritages, the Elgin is the type of shoe that will help you create a look that is all your own. The Elgin is well constructed. The 5 last is a abit narrow and longish compared to other AE shoes that I have. I got me a 8.5D which fits length wise but the width feels a little snug but I hope to break them in soon. The detailing and quality of leather is just phenomenal. Love the Elgin with its double oak soles and sturdy construction. The color contrast between the leather and sole is very eye catching. The Elgin will be a great classic style in time to come!

These shoes are awesome. Though it is only my second pair of AE's... They are truly incredible. I bought them just in time for summer. They will overwhelm your wardrobe. They go with almost any sock, and any type of pants (except black). Be careful though, they stand out a lot. I don't like to draw attention to myself, but these will attract everyone's eyes. I have a girlfriend who works at the mall and as I was trying on clothes at a store with these on she declared "I can't stop staring at your shoes" over and over and over.
Another note:: They work perfectly with the walnut Manistee belt. I had it from my Daltons and am so thankful it works with the Elgins.

My wife purchased this shoe for me as a surprise. I had been admiring it online for some time. I attempted to find it locally, but none of the Allen Edmonds dealers had it in stock.
After reading the reviews, I was concerned about the length. I own the Wilbert and Park Ave in a 9D (which both fit nicely), so I thought perhaps a 1/2 size smaller would be the right choice. Since I could not try the Elgin on, my local store suggested that I try on the McTavish. They are both in the rough collection and built on the 5 last, so I thought it was a great alternative. I tried both a 9 and an 8 1/2. The 8 1/2 in the McTavish was too tight across the widest part of my foot, and the 9 fit much better, with only a small amount of slip in the heel, which the store advised me would diminish as soon as the double oak sole broke in a bit. I decided to order the Elgin in a 9D for myself as a Father's Day gift, in a few weeks.
Much to my surprise, I arrived home one evening last week and found an Allen Edmonds box sitting on my bed. Inside was the Elgin, an early Father's Day gift (very early) from my wife.
Initially everything with the shoe looked fantastic. The quality seemed excellent and the shoe was beautiful. I thought the cap toe portion looked darker than the rest of the shoe, but my wife said it was just the lighting. Also, the color seemed lighter overall than the web pictures. I tried them on and they were definitely much longer than both my Wilbert and Park Ave. The heel slipped also, but given the statement about the sole breaking in, I decided to wear them on a trip to the mall the next day, but only inside, so if they weren't comfortable the soles would not be marred and I could return them if necessary.
Unfortunately, the dirt on the tile inside the mall still marred the soles, so a return was out of the question. Out in the light the cap toes were indeed darker than the rest of the shoe, but just by a shade or two. No one else will likely notice, but I do, and my wife does too now. Perhaps being in the rough collection, some portions of the shoe are meant to be darker than others, although I don't recall reading about that in other reviews?? Also, the left shoe is noticeably longer than the right shoe, by perhaps 1/8" or more. Again, no one else will likely notice, but I do.
So, long story short...I have a beautiful pair of shoes that are much longer than either of my other Allen Edmonds in a 9, with a slightly darker toe and one shoe that is slightly longer than the other. I solved the length/fit problem with a thin pair of insoles and a pair of tongue pads. The fit is better now and the heel slippage is gone. I have worn them several times now, and overall they are very comfortable, even with the slight aftermarket adjustment I needed to make, so I am satisfied overall.
I would still recommend these shoes to anyone who asked, with the caveat that you try on a pair first to get the size right, which will also give the opportunity to inspect the shoe for color variation or any other QC issues. The Elgin is a beautiful shoe and aside from the few issues mentioned is a stunning addition to my shoe collection. I like AE products enough to overlook these items, since I am able to use and wear them. I will continue to buy AE shoes as well.
I would have selected 3 1/2 stars for the overall rating, if that had been possible. The comfort is a 4 or better, with the size issue and color variation making the rating a 3...averaging a 3 1/2 stars or so.
Yes, I recommend this product.

Got this shoe very recently. Love the look and feel of this shoe! Nothing else like it out there! Looks great with casual and the fancier denim that every menswear store is trying to sell out there!! :)
Can't wait till it's a worked in AE go-to shoe! Little stiff to start but that's to be expected with the double-oak sole.
Love the look! Great compliment to the Wilbert!

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The Elgin’s heel consists of two parts: a heel base and the top-lift, which is the section that comes into contact with the ground. Our heel base is manufactured of stacked leather while the top-lift is made of a rubber material. The term “Double Oak” refers to the sole leather which goes through a vegetable tanning process where oak bark is used. Our Double Oak Leather Sole utilizes two layers of sole leather for added wear.

No, the Elgin was created with a casual fit in mind as a member of our Rough Collection, but is suitable for jeans, khakis, and everything in-between. Accompanied by a blazer or a button-up, they are the perfect foundation on which to build a great outfit.

Ultimately, what each individual chooses is their own decision; we encourage customers to purchase and wear what they feel most comfortable in.

I love the styling and build of this shoe. I have tried a 10D which was too wide in the heel, but fit in the ball and toe areas. Both a 10B and a 10.5B were too narrow across the ball of my foot. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you for your interest.

It sounds like you have tried the most likely options already. Everyone’s feet are different so it is very difficult to give advice without being in-person.

The best way to get a shoe with the right fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. You can find our store locations by clicking “Store Locator” at the top of the page, or by following this link: http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonlin...

Do note that, as a casual shoe, the Elgin is designed to be slightly wider than our traditional dress shoes in order to accommodate a thicker, casual sock.

These two shoes are very similar, but do have different styles. The McTavish is a wingtip shoe, while the Elgin is a cap-toe.

Both shoes share the same sole, last, leather, and are made in Port Washington with 360 degree welted construction. Both are eligible for our recrafting service.

The Elgin and other shoes from the rough collection should be cared for with Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap and a soft flannel cloth. Given the nature and styling of the leather, we do not recommend traditional polishes or shines. Here is a link to the saddle soap:

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

Allen Edmonds creates shoes with the highest standards of craftsmanship and style to give you the best experience possible.

Our commitment to excellence starts with ensuring you have the right shoes for your personal needs and sizing. With more and more customers preferring the convenience of online shopping, we've developed easy-to-use tools to help ensure you take accurate measurements and get the proper fit with your shoes. To get a truly professional fitting, we recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Master Fitter at any one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, this Shoe Fit Guide is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit.

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.

Home to some of the oldest and most authentic woolen looms in the world, the town of Elgin, located in the Scottish Highlands, is where our head designer was when the idea for this shoe was born.
