I have owned the Walden for about a month now, so I feel pretty comfortable commenting on them. First off, it is a great looking loafer. I find that it looks just as good with a nice pair of dark jeans as it does with dress pants (I bought the burgundy). They also seem to be well made, especially compared with the imported junk that make up the majority of my dress shoe collection.
I went in to an AE store to be fitted, and the sales associated determined that I was a "prefect" 10.5D, which also happens to be my sneaker size as well. The shoes fit just a touch tight in the store, but he assured me that they would stretch a bit with time.
After my first full-day wear, I actually considered returning them for a size up. My heels were rubbed raw, and there were red marks across the top of my feet (instep) where they were being squeezed. Now, I have "nubby" heels, so I think this is more my problem rathen than the Waldens' - it has happened with other shoes (and hockey skates growing up). However, I still believe that these run tight across the top. For the first few wears, I actually couldn't wait to get my shoes off after work because the top of my foot hurt so bad.
I'm happy to report that after a month, they have loosened up considerably. The shoes have molded around my oddly-shaped heels so there is no longer an issue there. The leather has stretched in the in-step as well, so while still a little tight, it is much better than the first few wears. If it is still a little tight in another month, I will take them to a cobbler to get the in-step stretched, but I honestly think they will be totally fine by then, based on recent progress.
The moral of the story: everyone's foot is different. I had read online many people who claimed "it fit like a glove on the first wear, and if it doesn't, somethings wrong". Shoes have never fit like that for me - it takes some considerable break-in time. I did dock a star due to the in-step, as judging by the other reviews I'm not alone. My advice would be to give it some time, as mine have loosened up quite a it.

I just purchased my first pair of penny's made by AE. I've worn them once and the shoe caused the top most part of my foot to hurt. I'm assuming because of the hard leather. The shoe fits perfectly everywhere else. I hope they give a little so these Waldens can be my go to shoe for the summer. I'm usually a 7.5D, however given the AE lasts I buy a 7. I found these Waldens to be on the very narrow side so I got the 7E. Nonetheless I really love the classic style, quality, and look it gives off

I have owned these shoes for under a year and have found the leather to be stiffer than expected and far from soft. They really haven't broken in. Shoes are closer to less expensive models made by other popular companies. Also, the shoes have developed an annoying squeek. The look is nice but the comfort is average at best.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Have purchased six pair of AE shoes in the past twenty-five years and have enjoyed wearing them all. However the seventh pair, Waldens, developed a noticable squeek in the left shoe that will not go away. Have never had a problem with the other pairs.

Size and Style

Hi I Just bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds Black Sagamore Size 5 triple EEE at a Speciality Short man's clothing store in Toronto yesterday. I Really like them. I Also am really interested in this Walden Penny Loafer. In fact I prefer penny loafers, black being my favorite but he didn't have any in my size so I took these because they fit. I looked at your videos online and really think this is the company for me. But when I look for shoes that fit me, like most retailers and websites, I can't find my size. It stinks being a size 5 triple E because nobody has them. Before I found this pair of shoes I had to go to the kids sections and buy the biggest pairs of Sperry's they had. But in the Book the Millionaire Mind it says "You don't wear cheap shoes, they wear on you". Ain't that the truth! My Back! That book recommended Allen Edmonds as a top shoe company and I had been looking for an Allen Edmonds that fit for about 10 years and had basically given up ever having one until yesterday when I found it at this Short Man's Specialty Store. I want to know if its possible to get this Walden Black Penny loafers to London Ontario where I live. I think they are so cool and classy. I'm a dual American and Canadian Citizen and support made in North America model, your company seems excellent. Thanks

The Walden is a member of our Handsewn styles, constructed on the 114 Last which has a slightly shorter vamp with a more rounded toe. By selecting shoes manufactured on the last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit.

Typically the same size can be ordered in all of our shoes. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape. The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, we offer an online, printable “Size & Fit Guide” which is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit. Keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

To get a truly professional fitting, we recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Master Fitter at any one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, this Shoe Fit Guide is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit.

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.

CARING FOR CALFSKIN & GRAIN LEATHERS
Use Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Carnauba Wax Polish, Premium Polish or Shoe Cream with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry. Remove excess polish by brushing with a horsehair shine brush and buff to a desired shine.

Allen Edmonds handsewn shoes are carefully crafted by some of the most skilled shoemakers in the world. Handsewing is thought to be one of the oldest forms of shoemaking, and the required attention to detail demands that a craftsperson spends several hours stitching each pair of shoes. The result is beautifully crafted footwear that only the hands of a true artisan can master.

Allen Edmonds handsewns use a tubular moc construction. This technique allows the lower leather to be pulled up around the last and stitched to the upper leather, resulting in an extremely comfortable and flexible shoe. The sole is then either stitched or adhered to the upper to complete the shoe.

This Handsewn style is recraftable®.

Allen Edmonds Handsewn shoes are so well-made that we can actually return them to their original glory with our exclusive Recrafting process. Using a process similar to the original manufacturing process, we literally rebuild worn footwear from the bottom up.

When you send your shoes in for Recrafting, our experts will first remove the heel and the sole from the shoe. Stretched over the proper last, the original uppers are re-shaped and the rebuilding process begins. After your shoes are re-soled and heeled, old finishes are carefully removed from the leather and new polishes and waxes applied. Finaly the sockliners are replaced on the inside of the shoe. In about four weeks, shoes that look surprisingly new are returned to you.
