Kenwood - Slip-on Penny Loafer Men's Dress Shoes by Allen Edmonds

When you mention the name of these shoes a lot of folks think stereos, but not us. Instead, we think about the Kenwood section of Chicago, home to the Museum of Science and Industry. Every visit to this magnificent building guarantees you'll see something you've never noticed before, which is fitting since every glance at our Kenwoods will lead you to pick up on a different aspect of these uniquely versatile shoes. The first thing that catches your eye will probably be the raised, hand-sewn stitching on the vamp as well as the single oak leather sole, two design aspects that work together to create the sleek toe you expect from a classic American penny loafer. But then your eye will spy the sophisticated beef-roll on the penny saddle and the hand-sewn kicker in the back, both of which have the formality for a pulled-together business casual look. Finally, you'll glance the delicate serrated pinking on the tongue and quarters that lend this footwear just the right hint of soulful charm you'll want for weekend wear. Cultured and adaptable, these shoes are sure to be the apple of your eye.

One shoe worked... Kind of. Have a pair of these in the Tan and the Burgundy. They both ran large, even though I sized down from my last pair of AE Loafers (Trenton, 11D). I wear a Park Avenue in 10.5D and they fit phenomenally, and with the understanding that the 10.5D was the longest, narrowest last, I expected the 10.5D to work well for me with regards to this shoe. There is some heel gap, which is irritating but not so bad that I gave up on the shoe. However, after wearing the burgundy pair for 2 months, one toe has extremely unsightly puckering and creasing where the other foot still looks like it came from the box. I take care of my shoes meticulously when possible, I was very disappointed to see that one shoe was so hastily made compared to the other in the pair. May 28, 2013
disappointed Purchased because they looked so great on display and fit in the store. Normally I wear 12 but was fitted for 11.5. A year later they still really never broke in to where I can say they are comfortable... The heel wore down faster than I expected. The upper / sole stitching is really strange in the toe...it doesnt look like it was made correctly. Maybe that's why I don't feel that comfortable in them. May 19, 2013
Comfy loafing When I first received this shoe I was worried as it fit REALLY snug, almost unwearably snug. I didn't give up and I have to say that it is now the most comfortable shoe I have. I wear it 3/4 times a week and it is a pleasure. April 30, 2013
Consistent fit, True to Size- Perfect These are a great retro option in a slip-on. I wear an 8.5 for other makers but am 8.0 D for AE. I have a Park Ave BLK, 2x Bradleys BLK/Burgundy , an older Dellwood moc toe Chili, and a pretty new Wilbert, & a Nashua. All are 8.0 and fit perfectly. These are no exception. But they fit tight at the outset. I wore mine around the house on carpets initially because I thought they might be too tight - and maybe I should size up. But after a few hours and a full day at the office - they molded very well. Now they fit perfectly after 16 hours of wear. No heel gaps/slap or other issues as reported below. My 20-something interns at the office all commented on this shoe. They look great with jeans also. I picked Burgundy for versatility and it looks good with a Brooks Bros suit as well as those jeans. I returned the VIP version of these shoes because I did not care for the sole. The basic version w/leather soles are what you want! April 10, 2013

Squeaking on hard surfaces

Customer avatar

I purchased a pair of Kenwood loafers from the Outlet Store. I love them, but I had to send the first pair back for exchange because of squeaking in both shoes. The replacement pair is half-better: only the right shoe squeaks now. It is only a problem on hard surfaces, especially hardwood and tile floors. The squeak isn't apparent on carpet.

The squeak appears to come from within the shoe; it's not an issue of friction with the floor. I've worn them 2-3 times per week for the past few months, hoping that the squeak would resolve itself. My questions: will the squeak eventually go away? Or is it structural? Is there something that I can do (conditioning oil?) to help lubricate the surfaces?

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

A squeaking-like noise is sometimes caused by the leather lining of our shoes rubbing against leather on the outside of the upper. This noise does not indicate a problem with the construction of the shoe; it is natural for two types of leathers which are layered upon one another to make noise. We recommend applying a talcum powder, which can help to reduce this.

I've waited forever hoping the Kenwood would be made in a B width.
What gives? Why isn't this made in a B width? I love the shoe and would really like to have a pair.

At Allen-Edmonds, we pay attention to remarkable numbers. Our shoes are made using 212 carefully executed steps. We have been around for 90 years. We offer shoes in 129 different size and width combinations – more than any other shoe company in the marketplace today.

At one time we did offer more sizes, but recently reduced the number of available size and width combinations for several reasons. We still offer many styles in fringe sizes in the Allen-Edmonds line from which you can select today. We also offer our Custom program which lets you order many of the traditional welted styles in our catalog in a number of special makeup colors, leathers, and unique sizes for an additional charge.

To filter for what we currently have available in a B width, you can click on the following link: http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonlin... (Narrow).

We hope that one of these options will ensure your continued patronage with Allen-Edmonds, and we thank you for your past business.

This is not an answer but a continuation of the question. These shoes are considered "classic". Why do they not come in a narrow width?

Is it necessary to size down for a loafer?

I have heard this is a good general rule - true for AE?

I wear a 12.5D in the Park Avenues, and so am stuck between the 12D and the 13D here.

Answer:
I wear a 10.5D in the unlined Neumok but the same size is too large in the unlined Kenwood loafer. The 10D fit much better. It would appear loafer sizing for me may be comparable to boat shoe sizing where a half size down is adequate.

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The Park Avenue is one of our Goodyear Welted styles, which is manufactured on our 5-Last (65); this last is the longest in length of our lasts and fits best on a long, narrow foot. Meanwhile, the Kenwood is one of our Handsewn styles, constructed on our 800 Last. This is a classic Handsewn last which features a semi-rounded toe, roomier instep and a longer forepart. By selecting shoes manufactured on the same last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit.

Typically the same size and last can be ordered in all of our shoes. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape. The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

I would hate to believe that I would be paying a premium for a shoe made outside of the United States. I have no problem paying a premium for a American Made shoe.

Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry.

Cordovan (horse hide) leather has a tighter grain than calfskin. Both leathers are soft, however, due to the density of cordovan it tends to be less flexible when compared to calfskin.
