Anyone who has ever had an Abbey or Trappist ale knows that monks know a thing or two about innovation and craftsmanship. Maybe that's why they were the first designers to come up with the shoe with a wide front strap. But what they invented, we feel we've perfected in our new Franciscan, a monk strap like only Allen Edmonds can make. Along with the puritan simplicity of the single buckle enclosure, we added a touch of brogueing and perfing to give it just the right amount of flare. As the monk strap has become the go-to footwear for stylish men from London to Los Angeles, we've shaped this model on the 333 last to create a chiseled toe to enhance a contemporary wardrobe of fitted suits and dark-washed denim. Befitting this modern style, we've outfitted it with our walnut calfskin, which creates a depth of character rarely seen in such a fashionable shoe. Made for the guy who likes to take chances, the Franciscan will make you the toast of the town.

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

Stylish but... Got this shoe as a gift 18 months ago but haven't really worn this for 6 months. They got compliments around the office but my left foot would always ache towards the end of the day. Wearing thin socks and having the buckle looser didn't solve the issue. My right shoe fits comfortably however. I guess my left foot is bigger than my right and the leather didn't stretch enough for a good fit. February 13, 2015
Incredibly comfortable I expected these shoes to be elegant looking, as they are, but a little stiff and fine for wearing maybe a few hours. Frankly, I could wear these all day long and walk miles in them. My feet are bad and I have to insert orthotics, but there is something about this particular shoe that fits like a glove. These are beautifully crafted shoes, and like all A-E shoes I've ever owned, they'll be with me for a long time. Note to self: never buy dress shoes except for Allen-Edmonds, end of story! January 23, 2015
Another great, stylish shoe This shoe is a great complement to the rest of my AE lineup. I will warn anyone buying this shoe, especially online, that there is a possibility of variation of fit. I purchased an 8.5D online, which was too big. I returned to my local AE retail location for a comparison with another 8.5D and the replacement shoes fit perfectly. Because these shoes are handcrafted, there is a possibility of slight variability of fit. Thank you AE for another great product! January 12, 2015
Even more beautiful and well crafted, in person The design of this shoe and the rounded buckle caught my eye on the web site, but is even BETTER looking in person. I'm glad I ordered it. The quality of the clan skin leather is amazing and the smoothness and depth of the black polish is astounding; very even and the shoe is beautifully crafted overall. The folded leather does creak a little as some reviewers mentioned, but it's not annoying and was more of a low-pitched creak than an annoying squeak. This was only audible in the office after hours with only a few staff around and all "white noise" turned off. Otherwise it's barely noticeable under normal circumstances. Note my less than perfect 'comfort' rating is comparing the Strands which I also ordered which are a better fit for my foot shape. n other words, I'm comparing the Franciscan Monk shoes to something that feels tailor made to my feet (Strand) while still saying that they feel better than any other shoe that I've owned including an older pair of BOSS monk straps. It was very comfortable on the ankle and heel (despite other reviews) and I also found the leather to be substantial, even though it didn't feel as thick as other AE shoes. Part of that perception may also be due to the lack of folded leather around the shoe opening. But it's stitched well while providing a more classic 'old world' shoe appearance than others with the "fold" It's important to note that another review I read here was misleading; suggesting to order a wider fit than normal as they fit narrow. This is incorrect as I did that, but ended up exchanging for a pair that were narrower than my normal width. Customer service advised of the same and were VERY helpful here. I had my replacement shoes within a week (in Canada) and am glad they suggested I try a narrower pair. If they didn't advise me and if they didn't help with such a smooth transaction, I wouldn't be a proud owner of these fine shoes! I don't quite understand some reviewers mentioning that the smooth part of the upper creased creases easily. To me, that's normal with this type of shoe and any shoe with a smooth leather. I've attached a photo showing what mine look like after 2 weeks - 10 days of continuous wear. I really think they still look sharp even with the creasing. The other design elements (patterned toe) and other elements detract from any wear that the shoe may exhibit over time. One great feature which I've had on other shoes is the elasticized buckle section which is well hidden under the leather, but allows a nice amount of give, thus providing strain relief on the leather. I've had this on other brands of buckled shoes but this shoe hides it well unlike other brands' versions. I'm glad that I took a chance on this shoe and aside from the compliments, I'm glad I took a chance on this shoe. t looks amazing with a suit; the elongated shape showing the buckle just in front of the pant hem and it also dresses up casual wear a notch. Very versatile! November 29, 2014

Hi, I have tried a pair of Rutledge - size 7D - that fit like a glove. Yes, this leather will be different, but would the size be the same - i.e., should I order 7D in the Franciscan? Worried as others have said this shoe may be narrow.

Answer:
The Franciscan and the Rutledge are both built on the 333 last, so the fit will be very similar; typically the same size can be ordered for styles that are made on the same last. We recommend trying the same size.

I am a measured 9.5D and found that a 9.5D is my true fit on most AE lasts, including lace shoes, strap shoes, and boots. Not sure about pure slip-ons.

I suggest you start with your regular size...you can always exchange them if necessary.

Answer:
If you're an 8 in the Strand, you would stick with 8 in this shoe also, but the width size is slightly wider in reality. To be clear; since you're a "D", you would want to order "C'. Short answer: "8C", if available.

Answer:
The Strand and the McAllister are both constructed on the 65 last, which is the longest in length of all of our lasts; best for a long, narrow look; and often the best fit for those with high arches. The Franciscan is constructed on the 333 last which has a slightly elongated profile and softer line at the outer edge, with a square shape for a more European or chiseled toe. By selecting shoes manufactured on the last that most resembles the contours of your feet, you will achieve a superior fit, only enhancing the comfort of your shoes.

The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Answer:
Buckle doesn't matter that much IMHO, as long as it's a standard buckle style. Much more important is the color of the belt matching the color of the shoe relatively closely.

Answer:
Focus on a belt with the same color as the shoe, in this case black or walnut

Personally, I think the Manistee belt compliments the shoe perfectly in either color.

If you have them in black the Stillwater most closely matches the respective buckles.

The sole is leather with an additional layer of thin, durable rubber added to the front. The shoe is certainly resoleable, but I don't know whether they can simply replace the rubber or if they have to do the hole sole (I would suspect the former).

Yes, the Francsican features our V-tread Combination Tap sole. Our combination tap soles are ideal when being worn in varying weather conditions as well as for someone who walks more heavily on their heels. This style of sole will offer ideal support and is very durable.

An individual can request a different sole be put on their shoe as a part of our Recrafting services in place of the style’s standard sole. However, the selection of which soles is limited to certain styles which include rubber, leather, and even golf soles.

A small bit of vaseline on your fingers spread on the underside of the strap where it meets the tongue permanently fixed the problem and it's a total non-issue. The shoes are gorgeous.

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

A squeaking-like noise is sometimes caused by the leather lining of our shoes rubbing against leather on the outside of the upper. This noise does not indicate a problem with the construction of the shoe; it is natural for two types of leathers which are layered upon one another to make noise. We recommend applying a talcum powder, which can help to reduce this.
