139 Strand - Cap-toe Lace-up Oxford Men's Dress Shoes by Allen Edmonds The Strand is Allen Edmonds CEO & President Paul Grangaard's favorite style! The relationship began in the early 1980s when, as a newly-minted banker eager for overseas experience, he had the good fortune of being transferred to Frankfurt, Germany. Given his age, inexperience and the language challenge inherent in the job, he was looking for a "credibility-enhancer" and some needed gravitas. So he bought his first pair of this distinctly American version of the classic senior executive's captoe brogue. When he became head of Allen Edmonds in 2008, Paul made sure they were one of the first styles reintroduced in the Timeless Classics Collection. Built on the 5-Last, these balmorals are full of personality, thanks to an array of impressive perforations plus a striking medallion on the cap toe. Perfectly complementing its design elements is this model's orderly and architectural form, which effortlessly conveys an air of achievement as well as refined elegance. This means, just as it did for Paul, that when you put on a pair of Strands, you'll elevate your game at the same time. I purchased the strand in walnut in a 8D. My usual size is an 8.5D. This is my first pair of ae shoes. I get complimented on the looks all the time. I was fit at an autorized department store dealer. I was told that the "last" was wider than normal. SOunds like they mixed up the lasts, because it is very narrow and long, and now it hurts the width of my feet at the ball, and my toes feel "squished" inwards. For such a beautiful shoe, I am disappointed that I was told at the dealer it is wider, when the website states the last is narrow.
Overall, I love the look, love the quality, but I am unsure how to get properly fitted outside of an AE store, of which there isn't one in my area.
So, it is a great shoe... if it fits. I am not sure I can trust anyone to fit me for AE other than an actual ae store. THis is the dilemma for me.
Yes, I recommend this product.

The Walnut Strand was my third pair in the last month. I have the Benton(awesome, I have many miles on these) and Hinsdale (Nice) which I purchased at the store. I got the Strand shipped to me because I love the styling and they did not have my size in the store. The bottom stitching is not in the channel on both shoes, the right is the worst, so they are on the surface of the sole. The first time I wore these the stitches started breaking and shredding, this is not how the shoes should have been put together. So the stitches will start unraveling before I can even break these in! These should not have made it out of the factory in this condition! My Hinsdale's were correct, that's why I can tell the difference between the correct stitching location and the incorrect one. I am a new customer and I put a lot of time and effort into finding the right shoes, colors and sizes and everything else is great, but this is terrible. I am a QC manager for a large multinational and I would not allow such glaring, visually simple to catch, quality issues to get out to my customers. AE needs to do a better job and I am concerned about purchasing anything from them via mail as I suspect they will ship me lower quality directly than I will find at the store. But the store is more than 2 hours away, so this will limit my purchases of AE brand shoes.
Yes, I recommend this product.

I have the Strand in Walnut; it is a classic shoe with beautiful leather that has held up well to wear. With regular care, the shoe still looks new. Very comfortable, too. I find these more comfortable than the Park Ave.

I think the Strand in Walnut is the shoe on the cover of the new 2012 Spring Catalog.

The Walnut Strand shoe on the catalog cover appears to have more of a darker hue than the Burnished Walnut I have or the ones I have seen in the store.

Did you darken the shoe for the catalog cover or is it just a result of good photography lighting, appears to be by fire light.

Thanks for your commitment to a quality product, it is appreciated.

Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The colorations you are seeing on our Walnut Strand on the cover of our 2012 Spring Catalog is a result of the photographer using some creative lighting; specifications for the Strand style have not changed.

Based on our hand burnishing technique used to finish each shoe, colors can vary. The byproduct of our hand-crafting process results in a unique and special pair of shoes each and every time.

I received these shoes about a month ago but was in Canada for 3 weeks. Got back excited to add the Strand and noticed imperfections but was OK with them. I wore them one full day Monday and planned on wearing tomorrow and I noticed the stitching on the top of the heel is coming out in several places. I'm heartbroken b/c they look/feel good but I planned on these shoes looking good for 10 years; not falling apart after one full day.

What do I do? I have a pair of Fifth Avenue's I've been wearing for two months and they seem to be doing fine.

Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

All of our heel heights vary slightly, about 1/16" by size; however, our standard heel height is 5/8 of an inch.

We do not currently offer a heel height of 1", and it is not available to order through our custom program.

Answer:
The AE premium shoe polish in walnut will suffice, along with the AE conditioner. The premium shoe polish is a combination of cream and polish. So it will nourish the shoe, as well as give it some shine. The conditioner will clean and soften the leather. For a true mirror shine, you will have to use the AE neutral shoe polish, as it will not affect the walnut color.

Though the Strand and McAllister styles are quite similar, they do share some of their own unique characteristics. The Strand style features impressive perforations plus a striking medallion on the cap toe, while the McAllister does the same only featured on a wingtip. Available in Walnut Calf, Dark Brown Burnished Calf, Black Custom Calf, the Strand is also a member of our Cordovan Collection with the Brown Cordovan Strand. The McAllister is only available in a calfskin leather upper, but offers the option of Merlot Burnished Calf in addition to Black Custom and Walnut Calf.

Answer:
They are on the same last, so the fundamental shape is the same. To begin with whey are offered in select colors, as you can get your Strands in a unique walnut, and the McAllisters in a brilliant melot. Design wise, the strands are what you would call a balmoral cap toe, with half broguing (perforated details). The McAllister is also a balmoral, but it is what you call a wing tip, 3/4 broguing. Both are considers to be more casual than their more formal brothers, the Park Avenue & the Fifth Avenue.

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

Allen Edmonds shoes will typically conform to your feet after several days of wear depending on length of wear, type of leather, and days of rest in-between wearing.

We apply a layer of shock-absorbent cork between the insole and the outsole of our shoes, which allows your sole to form an imprint in the cork over time, which acts as a comfortable cradle for your whole foot. The resulting imprint is totally unique to your foot shape and is part of the reason our shoes are so comfortable.

Answer:
I was really worried with my first pair (Fifth Aves). The break in with the Strands was the same. I would say it took about half a dozen wearings to feel good. They continued to become softer, more comfortable over time. I like wearing new shoes two days in a row. It seems to help quicken the process (I usually wear my shoes once a week or two). Try some conditioner if they still feel too stiff.

The main difference between cordovan and calfskin is the source, Cordovan leather is from the hind quarter of a horse, where calfskin is from a calf.

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

Allen Edmonds creates shoes with the highest standards of craftsmanship and style to give you the best experience possible.

Our commitment to excellence starts with ensuring you have the right shoes for your personal needs and sizing. With more and more customers preferring the convenience of online shopping, we've developed easy-to-use tools to help ensure you take accurate measurements and get the proper fit with your shoes. To get a truly professional fitting, we recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Master Fitter at any one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, this Shoe Fit Guide is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit.

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.

Strand - Cap-toe Lace-up Oxford Men's Dress Shoes by Allen Edmonds

The Strand is Allen Edmonds CEO & President Paul Grangaard's favorite style!

CARING FOR BURNISHED CALFSKIN
To remove the slight haze you may notice with a new pair of burnished calfskin shoes, wipe them with a soft cloth or brush with a horsehair shine brush. Clean regularly with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry. Then apply a medium coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Polish in the appropriate color and allow to air dry. Brush with a horsehair shine brush to remove excess polish and buff using a cotton flannel cloth.

CARING FOR CALFSKIN & GRAIN LEATHERS
Use Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Carnauba Wax Polish, Premium Polish or Shoe Cream with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry. Remove excess polish by brushing with a horsehair shine brush and buff to a desired shine.

Our 360° Goodyear welted footwear is characterized by its durability, comfort and fit. The manufacturing process consists of over 200 steps. The process begins with the cutting of the leather. Patterned dies are used, and pieces are cut based on the style. Skilled handsewers then stitch the vamps, plugs, foxes and quarters together to form the uppers. Next, each last is selected according to the style and size. The insole is attached to the bottom of the last. Then, the upper is pulled over the last with great care to make certain that seams are straight. The 360° welt is stitched around the perimeter of the outsole, eliminating the need for the rigid metal shank that is found in most other shoe brands. A heated cork layer between the insole and outsole allows each foot to form its own uniquely shaped print for true custom comfort. Finally, finishing touches are applied, and shoes are inspected to ensure perfection before being packaged.

This Style is recraftable

This style is recraftable®.

Allen Edmonds 360° welted shoes are so well-made that we can actually return them to their original glory with our exclusive Recrafting process. Using the original manufacturing process, we literally rebuild worn footwear from the bottom up.

When you send your shoes in for Recrafting, our experts will first free the uppers from worn soles. Stretched over the proper last, the original uppers become shoes again through our unique manufacturing process. After your shoes are re-welted, re-corked, soled and heeled, old finishes are carefully removed from the leather and new polishes and waxes applied. In about four weeks, shoes that look surprisingly new are returned to you.
