Overview

Kenilworth - Plain-toe Lace-up Oxford Men's Dress Shoes by Allen Edmonds

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." Those are the words of Leonardo da Vinci, who brought that sensibility to all of his artistic endeavors, including the many footwear prototypes he sketched out. In creating the Kenilworth, we were inspired by this Italian's artistic notion and married it with a uniquely American design. The result? A shoe that is at once aesthetically pleasing while also being inherently straightforward. Impressive in its stunning lack of adornment, this three-eyelet plain-toe blucher with a single oak leather sole is the essence of refinement. Built on the 5-Last to achieve a long and narrow silhouette, the Kenilworth is class personified and the ultimate footwear to match with a tuxedo or formal business attire. Finished off with a burnished toe and intricately beveled sole, this is a design an Old Master would be proud to wear.

Bourbon is whiskey, but it has to be made in a distinct way (and in the USA) to get its special name. Similarly, our Bourbon leather is calfskin, but it takes a unique bit of American craftsmanship to create this exceptional finish. The process starts with a warm, walnut leather which on its own cuts a dashing figure. But once we burnish the exterior on the black wheel, we not only heighten the shine but imbue the surface with contrasting low-lights to create a rich depth of color. The final result adds both character and sophistication to the shoe, creating footwear that is as unmatched as it is uncommon.

Bowing at the ankles This is my first Allen Edmonds. I choose this over the Park Avenue because I like the simplicity of the design. I tried both the Park Avenues and Kenilworth at the Allen Edmonds store and felt that the Kenilworth were less restricting at the ridge of the insole. Unfortunately I did not notice how much the shoes "bowed" at the ankles until I purchased the shoe. After realizing this issue, I read the reviews of the Kenilworth on Nordstrom, Zappos, as well as this site and notice that the reviews contained complaints on the bowing. I tried on both the C width and D width and selected the D width because it was a near perfect fit and C was way too narrow for me. So I do believe that the Kenilworth that I bought are the right size for me and perhaps the bowing is a design flaw. I did not notice bowing with the Park Avenues. I only had the shoe for one day and it already looks like I have been wearing it for months. This is very unfortunate because this is a great looking shoe. With a 300 dollar shoe, I would expect better. I am a bit disappointed to say the least. June 9, 2013
If only it were offered in "B" width for small sizes Allen Edmonds 8.5 B fits me perfectly. If they made this shoe in that size I would certainly buy it (I wore this shoe in size 7D when my feet were smaller) May 12, 2013
Looks great but weird bowing around the ankles Bought these shoes in black after a few wear they started to bow out around my ankles every time I take a step. I tried on every possible size in the store to find the perfect fit and even still there is this weird flaring around the ankles on both sides of both feet. Shoes look great but there seems to be some weird issues with the fit. Buyer beware. April 4, 2013
Uncomfortable Footbed As others have mentioned, this is a fantastic looking shoe. I was very much looking forward to buying one or two pairs in different colors. However, when I purchased my first pair, it was immediately apparent there were fitment problems. First, there was bowing around the ankle. Not as bad as others have noted, but it is definitely apparent. Secondly, there felt as if there was a hard lump or ridge in the cork insole, right underneath the ball of my left foot. Almost as if the cork was not laid flat during construction. I spoke with the store, and the sales representative recommended wearing it around for a few days, saying that the cork should mold to my feet. Well, after a full week of suffering with no apparent change in the footbed, I decided to simply exchange the shoes for another pair. Lo and behold, the second pair had the same lump or ridge, but in both shoes! At this point, I would be too embarrassed to return the shoes again, so I may just relegate them to times in which I do not have to be on my feet all day. It really is a shame because they are very sharp looking shoes. I have several other pairs of AEs with the same footbed and insole and none have exhibited this issue. I do not know what makes the Kenilworth different, but I would definitely recommend trying it on before you purchase. April 1, 2013

These look like very nice shoes, but it seems like a lot of people have the problem of bowing below the ankle. Has that been addressed?

Answer:
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

The Kenilworth and Park Avenue styles were not manufactured with an orthotic fit in mind. We only manufacture a select number of styles with our removable footbed. As well, Allen Edmonds Replacement Orthotic Insoles are designed for a select number of styles which feature removable orthotics. You can find the complete Allen Edmonds Orthotic Collection of shoes by clicking here: http://www.allenedmonds.com/aeonlin...?.

Keep in mind though, if the shoe is fit large enough, orthotic inserts can be used in almost any of our shoes. Depending on your foot shape and preferred fit, typically we recommend ordering a size up. The best way to get a proper fit with your orthotic inserts is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Why in the two photos provided under reviews for this shoe does it appear that the outside of the opening has a gaping opening or cupping. The photos are not very flattering. I like the appearance of the shoe until it is on a foot in these photos. Do you see what I mean? It's a serious question because I was about to buy them online from another web site. Im not interested in having my question posted. Just looking for an answer for myself. Thank you.

This gaping you are describing from our online photos is most often caused by an improper fit; this does not indicate a problem with the construction of the shoe.

To prevent this from occurring, the best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. I really like the shoe style and the walnut color, but too many reviews about the sole and mis fit bothers me. I even tried 2 of these pairs, while one pair did not fit properly and on the other pair the left shoe was slightly tighters in width.
So, I wanted to check if there is any warranty for the shoe after purchase ?

We do not offer any written warranty on our shoe styles. Because each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape, we recommend visiting one of our retail stores in order to get fitted by one of our master fitters. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Although all Allen Edmonds shoes are treated with our finishing process before leaving our factory, they are not specifically pre-treated against water damage.

Calfskin styles, including the Kenilworth, and cordovan styles are susceptible to water damage as they are made from leather which is a natural material. To provide an added layer of protection against dirt and water, we offer waterproof premium Swims Overshoes which allow you to wear your favorite shoes regardless of weather conditions. For suede, nubuck, and fabrics, we recommend using our Spray Waterproofer for Suede, Nubuck, and Fabric Shoes by Allen Edmonds to provide a layer of protection against dirt and water.

I recently purchased this shoe from the outlet in Leeds. I love the fit of my other shoes on the 5 last and really like the color and style of the Kenilworth in burnished brown. I was hoping this would be my "go to" shoe thanks to its versatility but can rarely wear them. Unlike my McAllister's which were comfortable right of the box, these did not quite feel the same right away. I chalked it up to them being new and possibly needing a slight break-in period. However, it has been about 2 months and they are actually less comfortable now than they were initially. In fact, they are to the point where I cannot wear them if I plan on walking any more than simply up to the office from the parking garage as I get blisters from the heel digging into my skin (on both feet). I have been pleased with my other A&E purchases and thought I found the perfect fit with the 5 but now I am not sure if it is this model or possibly a defect with the particular shoe. Thanks for your feedback!

No, the Kenilworth was created with a dressier fit in mind, but is suitable for more casual apparel as well. This style, in all three colors, is striking enough to be paired with a tuxedo or formal business attire, and simple enough to throw on with pair of blue jeans.

Ultimately, what each individual chooses is their own decision; we encourage customers to purchase and wear what they feel most comfortable in.
