I own several AE shoes. The McTavish (both colors), Benton, MacNeil, Fairfax all in 11 D. They fit fine. These however are too narrow in the forepart of my foot. The leather is soft so over time they may give way a little bit, but I had to return these because I don't want a long break-in period. I was surprised. Sad I had to return them, because they are quite beautiful! If you're a D width, I'd go for an E or get properly sized before you make a mistake like I did.

I got the 12B and was surprised that the fit differed considerably from the same 12B in a recently-purchased Kenilworth - which was perfect. Is a strain to wear this pair. Will need to make a modification or speak with my cobbler. Consider going up one size from your normal ...

Just received my first ever pair of AE shoes - Vernon!
Extremely pleased with build of the shoes. They are built like a tank :-) Definitely will last a long time!
Width was exactly as per measurement template.
Run a little too long.
Unfortunately shoes are a bit too roomy in the vamp area and when I walk - shoes slip off the heel. Its an odd feeling... I tried tightening the - but balmoral shoe has limited ability to make shoe opening smaller... Any suggestions?
I purchased 9E.
Would selecting 8.5E or 9D be a better choice... Not sure if that is the sizing problem or the way the last is built. My feet are on a skinny side...
Planning to purchase Strands and Fifth Avenues, but now very puzzled with how to avoid shoes slipping off the foot...

I purchased a pair in 11D--my normal AE size for most shoes. This is my first pair on the 8-108 last. They are a little tight around my pinky toes but it's not unbearable--just quite tight. I've worn them 8 times. Will the leather stretch and loosen more around my toes over time? Or should I get the 11E? I am worried that the 11 E will be too wide in the heel since I normally am an 11D.

The 8-Last (108) features an elongated forepart with a tapered and flatter toe. By selecting shoes manufactured on the last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit. Typically the same size can be ordered in all of our shoes and lasts. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape.

The Vernon style was introduced in Spring 2010 and has only been made available in our Black and Saddle Brown Calf styles. We recommend using our Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish in Saddle Brown.

Our Fifth Avenue is constructed on our 5-Last (65), which is the longest in length of our lasts and the best fit for a long, narrow foot. Meanwhile, the Vernon is constructed on our 8-Last (108), which has an elongated forepart with a tapered and flatter toe. By selecting shoes manufactured on the same last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit.

Typically the same size and last can be ordered in all of our shoes. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape. The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

The Vernon is built on the welted 8-108 last.

You can see what shoes are built on each last by selecting “View All” from under the main SHOES menu. Then scroll down and click the plus sign next to the “LAST” filter on the left hand side of the screen. Select the last you are interested in to see all the shoes manufactured on it.

Thank you for your inquiry. The McTavish is manufactured on the same last as the Park Avenue, but tends to run slightly larger. It was designed that way because it is a casual shoe and men tend to wear it with a thicker, more casual sock.

The Vernon is manufactured on a slightly different last. This shoe is manufactured on the 8 last which has an elongated forpart with a tapered and flatter toe.

The best way to know what size you will take in a particular shoe is by trying the shoes on. If you are unable to visit one of our retail stores to be assisted by one of our Master Fitters, make sure you try the shoes on a carpet surface. That way they will be returnable if they do not fit when you recieve them.

I would say no. The vernon for me tend to run long compared to my park avenue. However, I wouldn't size down one whole size from your P.A. Maxium of 1/2 size would do. Otherwise buy your P.A size and place some insoles inside for a tigher fit.

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

To get a truly professional fitting, we recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Master Fitter at any one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, this Shoe Fit Guide is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit.

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.
