Very happy with this shoe. While a dress shoe, it works very well with business casual attire, which is why I purchased this shoe. The shoe is very comforatble, and it fits exactly to size. This shoe replaces my black Stockbridge, which I've worn for about 10 years.

I wear full length prescription orthotics, and also have a very narrow foot. Needless to say, finding shoes that fit well is more than difficult, not to mention finding high quality, stylish shoes. I've tried some of the "traditional" AE models at local retailer, but they have never fit well due to the additional volume consumed by the orthotics. So, having found the Ashtons and Bentons, I ordered one of each. The fit is fantastic, and they are extremely comfortable! And of course, the quality of AE handcrafted shoes is 2nd to none. This is the first time I've been able to wear high quality dress shoes in years.

I just purchased my first pair of AE shoes and want to make sure they last. I noticed even light rain superficially soaks into the leather. I am worried about staining. I am so cautious to the point I feel I can't enjoy the shoe. Will a waterproofer help ease my nerves. I don't obvisouly expect to walk through puddles but don't want to have to plan what shoes I'll wear around a little rain.

We do not recommend using our Spray Waterproofer for Suede, Nubuck, and Fabric Shoes by Allen Edmonds on calfskin styles like the Ashton. Instead, we recommend and offer waterproof Swims Overshoes which are a great way to protect your investments by allowing you to wear your favorite shoes regardless of weather conditions.

I purchased a pair of Ashtons and was surprised after a month how noisy they still were, and even suspected some sort of defect in the heal. I was able to exchange that pair for an exact new pair, and although they are still very new they are very squeaky? Can I expect the noise to subdue or hopefully disappear with wear?

”Squeaking” in a premium leather shoe is normally caused by two types of leather in the shoe’s construction rubbing together. For example, the outer leather on top of the Ashton’s tongue rubbing against the leather lining on the underside of the shoe’s eyestays. This noise does not indicate a problem with the construction of the shoe; it is natural for two types of leathers which are layered upon one another to make noise. Applying a talcum powder can help to reduce this.

Size and Width

I normally wear a 7.5 and a width of 4E in other shoes, can you tell me what size in the Ashton I should look at and which other styles that run wider?

I recommend going to a quality shoe store to have someone who is skilled at fitting mens' shoes measure you. Try Nordstrom or an Allen-Edmonds store. Once you know your correct size and have a pair of AEs fitted, my experience tells me that you can then always get that exact size from AE and each pair will fit correctly. BTW I wear a 9 3E. I recently bought a new pair at an AE store and just told the clerk the model, color and size I wanted and bought them without trying them on because I know that they'll fit. And they did-I wore them today and walked about two miles throguhout the day.

I would recommend going to an Allen Edmonds retail store, or an Allen Edmonds Dealer in your area, to be prossionally fit by one of our Master Fitters. Allen Edmonds manufactures their shoes on many different lasts. So depending on the last the shoe is manufactured on, will determine the size that you will need in that particular shoe.

Ashton shoe runs very true to size as thought it is a custom fit specifically made for your foot, so whatever size you would normally wear, the Ashton will fit like a glove.

While it is most common for sizes to be consistent across styles, the Ashton and the Wilbert are constructed on different Lasts which will give the shoes a slightly different fit and feel. The best way to ensure a proper fit is to visit an Allen Edmonds store to be fitted by one of our master fitters.

Shoes purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused, accompanied by the packing slip and is part of our current catalog. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface helps prevent scuffing to the soles and keeps the shoes returnable.

How To Measure Your Feet For The Best Fit

To get a truly professional fitting, we recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Master Fitter at any one of our retail stores. However, if an Allen Edmonds store is not located near you, this Shoe Fit Guide is designed to help ensure your Allen Edmonds shoes are the best possible fit.

Helpful Tools

Tip #1: Measure At A Time That Fits
Feet tend to swell in different circumstances and at different times of the day. We suggest you measure your feet during the midday or late afternoon after you have been on your feet for some time.

Tip #2: Wear Socks When Measuring
Wear the type of socks that you'll likely be wearing with your new shoes, as the thickness of the socks may affect your measurements.

Tip #3: Stand Straight and Balanced
When you do the measuring, be sure both feet are on the ground and you're balanced and straight to get the proper foot placement.

Tip #4: Get Someone To Help You
You need to have a friend help you take the measurements because if you were to try to take your measurements yourself, when bending down to mark your length and width, your sizing would be affected. Make sure your friend takes your measurements looking straight down at the Shoe Fit Guide. Even viewing it at a slight angle may affect the outcome.

Tip #5: Give Yourself A Bit of Room
If your measurement is on a length line, we recommend you go to the next half-size longer in order to give your toes a bit of room.

Tip #6: One Foot Larger Is Common
Almost everyone has one foot larger than the other. The key is to determine your size from the measurement of the larger of your two feet. And obviously, be sure to measure both feet.

CARING FOR BURNISHED CALFSKIN
To remove the slight haze you may notice with a new pair of burnished calfskin shoes, wipe them with a soft cloth or brush with a horsehair shine brush. Clean regularly with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry. Then apply a medium coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Polish in the appropriate color and allow to air dry. Brush with a horsehair shine brush to remove excess polish and buff using a cotton flannel cloth.

CARING FOR CALFSKIN & GRAIN LEATHERS
Use Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Carnauba Wax Polish, Premium Polish or Shoe Cream with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry. Remove excess polish by brushing with a horsehair shine brush and buff to a desired shine.

Our 360° Goodyear welted footwear is characterized by its durability, comfort and fit. The manufacturing process consists of over 200 steps. The process begins with the cutting of the leather. Patterned dies are used, and pieces are cut based on the style. Skilled handsewers then stitch the vamps, plugs, foxes and quarters together to form the uppers. Next, each last is selected according to the style and size. The insole is attached to the bottom of the last. Then, the upper is pulled over the last with great care to make certain that seams are straight. The 360° welt is stitched around the perimeter of the outsole, eliminating the need for the rigid metal shank that is found in most other shoe brands. A heated cork layer between the insole and outsole allows each foot to form its own uniquely shaped print for true custom comfort. Finally, finishing touches are applied, and shoes are inspected to ensure perfection before being packaged.

Allen Edmonds 360° welted shoes are so well-made that we can actually return them to their original glory with our exclusive Recrafting process. Using the original manufacturing process, we literally rebuild worn footwear from the bottom up.

When you send your shoes in for Recrafting, our experts will first free the uppers from worn soles. Stretched over the proper last, the original uppers become shoes again through our unique manufacturing process. After your shoes are re-welted, re-corked, soled and heeled, old finishes are carefully removed from the leather and new polishes and waxes applied. In about four weeks, shoes that look surprisingly new are returned to you.
