Overview

While supplies last. Limited to the sizes and widths that are currently available online.

Allen Edmonds and the penny loafer came into existence right around the same time and over the years both have evolved without losing the American style that made them successful in the first. The Ascher captures the classic image of a penny but we've given this design a slightly longer and wider saddle for a contemporary look that can be dressed up or dressed down with equal favor. Crafted using Bourbon calfskin, this rich leather is the ideal choice to show off the Ascher's organic lines. The seam on the new style of moccasin toe is created with a pintuck stitch to add an element of sophistication to this otherwise traditional design. A roomier forefoot and higher toe wall marry nicely with a narrower heel for a comfortable yet secure fit. Overall, the Ascher is the natural selection for anyone looking for a loafer to both advance and enhance their wardrobe in one simple step.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Reviews
Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 20 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Looking Shoe That Didn't Fit The Ascher penny loafer is a great looking shoe. The bourbon color was my first choice followed by walnut. It's a very versatile shoe that can be worn with slacks, jeans, and even shorts. It can also be worn with or without socks (or no show socks). I was so disappointed when I discovered the 606 Last was not for me. It was too tight on my little toe and around the top of my foot. I own about a dozen Allen Edmonds and have been buying them for 20 years. I've kept my shoes in excellent condition by following a few guidelines. I clean and condition my shoes before the first use. Since the shoes might have been in inventory for a while, you want to make sure the leather is hydrated before wearing them. After that it's just regular intervals of cleaning, conditioning, and polishing/shining. And of course I always use proper fitting cedar shoe trees. Another important bit of information is to not wear the same pair of shoes on successive days. This way the shoe has time to naturally dry out between wearings. July 15, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Finally found my loafer..... As have others here, I tried many other loafers before finally finding this shoe. With a 13 EEE and probably a high instep, everything was either too cramped in the toe box or would just flop off my heel. The Patriot came closest. I ordered them two different times hoping the first pair were just slightly off, but no, the strap (top) was too snug. I tried the Cavanaugh, the Randolph, the Grayson, and also 3 other brands. I had about given up hope of again wearing loafers and making them my go to shoe as I had done many years past. After a previous reviewer spoke of his similar difficulty with other styles, I ordered, slid them on and thought, "Oh-oh, something's wrong. They feel too good. Must be too big or something." Nope. I wore them around the house looking for signs they might get loose, but they just got better, so I committed, wore them outside and never looked back. Other AE shoes I have, all 13EEE, are the Strand, McTavish, and Eastport (which never fit right - small). The Ascher is a great looking, comfortable shoe with one big limitation; they need more color choices. July 15, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love the color and style of the Ascher! This is my 5th pair of Allen Edmond shoes so I thought I'd finally write a review. My other pairs are the Bedford, Macneil, Mctavish, and Norwich. I'm a 9-1/2 D in all of them except the Macneil where I take a 10C. I favor the 65 last. The Norwich last fits me the worst, Allen Edmonds Phoenix store warned me against them, but I bought them anyone; I liked the color and don't regret the purchase. The Ascher shoe is great for travel and transitions well between day and night. The color bourbon works perfectly with the penny loafer style and website pictures fail to show the depth of the color. It works well with many colors. In short, the Asher is my second favorite shoe thus far; the Macneil being my favorite. July 13, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Versatile high-quality Loafer Was looking to expand my shoe wardrobe to include a loafer, but wanted something that was classic, high quality, and versatile enough that it could be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. This loafer really fits the bill for me. In the bourbon color I routinely wear it with summer trousers as well as Khakis and dressed up jeans. Great profile and great quality build. July 13, 2016

Allen Edmonds dress shoes like the Ascher do not contain metal and can pass through airport metal detectors without setting them off.

I need orthotic inserts and while trying to remove the original insert it doesn't appear to come out. Is there a way to replace the insert?

Answer:
Based on the height and thickness of your insert...that of course plays the biggest part. They are great fitting and comfortable as they are, but with inserts??? I would purchase a pair in the size you usually buy, put your insert in them and try them on carpet for w while...if they don't work call AE customer service and speak with them, they will take great care of you.

Answer:
The Ascher style was not designed with an orthotic fit in mind and so it does not feature a removable insole. We advise against removing the insole as it will cause permanent damage to the shoes. The styles that feature removable insoles are only those that are part of the Orthotic Collection, Jack Nicklaus Collection, and the new Road Warrior Collection.

However, if the shoe is fit large enough, orthotic inserts can be used in almost any of our shoes. It is important to keep in mind that the use of an orthotic will alter the way a shoe fits; we recommend trying on your orthotics with the shoes or visiting one of our master fitters at our retail stores as they can recommend the best possible fit.

There can be some variations due to lasting and the nature of the handcrafting process, but typically the seam is closer to the front edge of the toe.

Fit
So I missed out on the St. Thomas and Hyde Street and am not happy about that, but now I see there is an alternative to the Patriot after all. Will these fit exactly the same as the Patriot? Does the top come down any lower on the Ascher (meaning could it affect high arches differently)?

Answer:
My experience with 13EEE in both was the Patriot was a bit too tight across the top, the Ascher was fine. I might have what's called a high instep.

Answer:
It is a similar fit for sure. However, I did find that the placement of the strap allowed for a little extra room under the strap. That being said, the 606 is really not a last for those with high arches in my opinion. Great shoe though.

Answer:
Both the Ascher and the Patriot are constructed on the same 606 last and so we suggest trying the same size. This last has roomier forepart which can accommodate a higher instep, however a comfortable fit depends on how high the instep is. We recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds Retail Store or Retail Partner that can assist you with the fit of our shoes.

If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Answer:
Length seems the same. Fit is a bit narrower but seems appropriate if you are going to go no-show or sockless. Its a bit tight with normal wool dress socks vs the same size Park Ave.

Answer:
The Ascher Penny Loafer is manufactured on our 7-Last (97) which is our best fitting last for the average foot, but also lays flatter in the toe area. The Park Avenue, which is built on our 5-Last (65) is the longest in length of our lasts, and fits best on a long, narrow foot. By selecting shoes manufactured on the same last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape.

The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. If this is not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.
