Overview

Anyone who has ever had an Abbey or Trappist ale knows that monks know a thing or two about innovation and craftsmanship. Maybe that's why they were the first designers to come up with the shoe with a wide front strap. But what they invented, we feel we've perfected in our new Franciscan, a monk strap like only Allen Edmonds can make. Along with the puritan simplicity of the single buckle enclosure, we added a touch of brogueing and perfing to give it just the right amount of flare. As the monk strap has become the go-to footwear for stylish men from London to Los Angeles, we've shaped this model on the 333 last to create a chiseled toe to enhance a contemporary wardrobe of fitted suits and dark-washed denim. Befitting this modern style, we've outfitted it with our walnut calfskin, which creates a depth of character rarely seen in such a fashionable shoe. Made for the guy who likes to take chances, the Franciscan will make you the toast of the town.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Our new Dark Chili and Oxblood burnished leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue. Follow by using a soft cloth to apply our Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap which cleans all smooth leather shoes while restoring the leather's natural oils.

Rated 3 out of 5 Below Average for Allen Edmonds These shoes don't have any cushion. They are not comfortable to stand in or walk in for long periods of time. I have six other pair of Allen Edmonds and these are by far my least favorite. On the positive side they look good. November 5, 2015

Rated 4 out of 5 by Mike82 Excellent, but noisy An elegant and classic slip on. Goodyear welts and rubber sole make for a very sturdy shoe. Very happy with mine so far. That said, they make noise. I'm honestly slightly embarrassed walking down the hall in my office. I can be heard coming by my colleagues. Thankfully they are a light-hearted group, but if not, I would probably not wear them until the noised dissipated. October 26, 2015

I initially ordered a 9.5 (too large, I walked right out of the shoe), but the AE team sent me a prompt exchange. Yes, they are a bit squeaky at first, but it is quite comfortable and extraordinarily handsome. October 1, 2015

Rated 5 out of 5 Love this shoe! The look speaks for itself, so I was eager to unpack my new Franciscans. When I first put them on, though, they felt a little loose--like my heel was going to come out. Fortunately I wore them on a carpeted surface for a bit and as the shoe began forming to my foot, the heel slip stopped and they now fit like a glove. They do squeak a bit, but that's typical of a monk-strap shoe in my experience. I have a different pair of AE monk-straps that I've worn for 20+ years and that pair is one of my all-time favorites, so I'm very happy with this new addition. September 10, 2015
