Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Our new Dark Chili and Oxblood burnished leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue. Follow by using a soft cloth to apply our Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap which cleans all smooth leather shoes while restoring the leather's natural oils.

Further details and videos are available on our Caring for Your Shoes page.

Rated 5 out of 5 by At least as good as.. ..the Walton. Excellent sizing for my size (10.5 / EEE), fits perfect to chinos or suit. The material itself feels excellent and the look, I just like it. One of my best AE's November 19, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Beautiful Shoe, But Quality Control Issues Chili is a gorgeous color for the McGregors; more understated than a walnut with more depth and richness than a brown. In some light the shoes are red, in others brown, which is a nice little surprise. As another reviewer pointed out, the shoes do not seem to have the piping from the photos, which skew them a bit more casual, which is a little strange with the single sole. I returned the first pair I received due to some serious issues with the sole stitching. Stitching outside of the channel seems to be the norm with AEs I've received, but this flirted with the edge of the sole. The shoes also flared out quite a bit when laced, which led an AE sales associate to suggest I size down a width from my usual 65 last size due to the open lacing. After a dozen or so wears, I can conclude that they are going to be unwearable at the smaller width, despite the claims that they would stretch. To be fair, that may be an issue with the lasting. The right shoe has felt significantly tighter along the arch than the left. After the shoes did not stretch as expected, I became suspicious and measured the shoes across the highest point of the laces, from welt to welt: the right pair is 1/4 inch smaller (pulled tighter) than the left. The left shoe has its own issues. The leather was wrinkled on the right side of the shoe, which I accepted rather than dealing with another return. Now that they've been worn, the looser leather of the left shoe has resulted in significantly greater creasing across the vamp than the right shoe, as well as some puffiness. In the end, I have a pair of relatively new shoes that were once beautiful and are now only acceptable, but that are, unfortunately, completely unwearable due to a manufacturing defect--and possibly some questionable advice. Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Shoe. Even more Awesome Mario Seguro I had visited in SFO to buy this shoe. It was a perfect fit. This was mainly because of Mario who took great time and effort to ensure the right shoe and right fit for me. Anyone visiting SFO Allen Emonds should ask for Mario. I can bet you will not be disappointed. October 30, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Beautiful shoe Almost every time I wear these shoes someone stops and asks me if they are Allen Edmonds and where did I purchase them? It has become almost humorous for my wife. September 24, 2015

Answer:
The first difference is that the shoes are built on different lasts, so they will fit differently. Generally speaking the Mcgregor will be longer and narrower.

The second difference is that the Macneil has a double oak leather sole and a storm welt, whereas the Mcgregor has a single oak leather sole and a standard welt. The Macneil will look "blockier" and that may or may not be your preference for this style of shoe.

Third, the Macneil has piping on the edges whereas the Mcgregor does not. I happen to like the piping.

Answer:
The McGregor is constructed on the 65 Last which has a long and narrow fit, and it features a Single Oak leather sole. The McNeil 2.0, on the other hand, is constructed on the 97 Last which is best fit for the average foot, and it features a Double Oak Butyl leather sole or a Dainite Rubber sole depending on the leather style.

Answer:
Absolutely, the Bourbon leather is one of our most versatile colors when it comes to coordinating it with your wardrobe and it goes particularly well with Navy suits. We recommend pairing the McGregor with the Manistee dress belt in the same color, a solid dark navy tie or one with a minimal pattern, and a light color shirt.

Ultimately, what each individual chooses is their own decision; we encourage customers to purchase and wear what they feel most comfortable in.

Answer:
The Manistee dress belt in Walnut was designed to coordinate with the Walnut burnished styles. Keep in mind, however, that based on our hand burnishing technique used to finish each shoe and belt, colors can vary. The byproduct of our hand-crafting process results in a unique and special product each time.

Also, they are still squeaking after several wearings. Is this indicative of anything?

Answer:
The main difference between the Larchmont and McGregor is the fit of each style since they are constructed on different lasts. The other difference is that the Larchmont features a Poron insole for added cushion. The nature of the handcrafting process, however, results in a unique pair of shoes every time.

Squeaking sometimes occurs on new shoes because Allen Edmonds uses authentic leathers such as calf skin. When two pieces of new leather rub against each other, such as the leather lining, upper leather and /or tongue leathers, a slight squeaking may occur. The fix is usually quite simple; general wear will eliminate the noise or you can apply leather lotion as a lubricant. Lotion can be found at AllenEdmonds.com, most shoe shine stands or simply visit an Allen Edmonds store and have a store associate apply the lotion for you. Importantly, if you have any further concerns or needs please contact our customer assistance center at 877-817-7615.

Answer:
No, all Allen Edmonds welted shoes feature a shank-less construction, meaning our shoes do not contain metal shanks like shoes from other brands. One major benefit of this type of construction is that Allen Edmonds shoes can pass through airport metal detectors without setting them off. A shank-less construction also allows us to offer lighter weight shoes with the flexibility that most of our customers prefer.

Answer:
The McGregor and the Jefferson are both constructed on the 65 Last; as a result, these two styles will feature a similar fit. The 65 last is known as the longest and narrowest of all of our lasts. We suggest checking out the MacNeil wingtip which is constructed on the 97 last and best fit for the average foot.

Answer:
Yes. I would wait until it returns in stock. The bourbon fits with burnished brown and I own both. However, I eventually purchased the burnished brown basi belt. Look for other AE designs in brown.

Answer:
The McGregor style #4553 is a dark brown burnished calfskin which is not a burgundy color. The brown leather used on this style is the same leather used for most dress welted styles, including the Park Avenue style #5845 of Fifth Avenue style #5745.
