Overview

At Allen Edmonds we believe you can’t make the best without using the best. Here that means the finest suede in the world from Charles F. Stead, the century-old English tannery. This supple and smooth suede gives our new Sea Island penny loafer a soft and smooth look that is perfect for sockless wear. It also lends the blues and browns a depth and richness that’s reminiscent of a day by the ocean. This slip-on is unlined, which creates an airy feel and the comfortable fit that results when your foot nestles right against the interior of buttery-soft suede. Made with a water-resistant Butyl sole for added versatility, the Sea Island possesses everything you want in a casual slip-on.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

We recommend using our Allen Edmonds Spray Waterproofer when caring for this style. Make sure the surface area is clean and dry. Spray evenly from a distance of 6 - 8 inches and allow to air dry before wear. Allen Edmonds Spray Waterproofer will not alter color, but it may darken the fabric initially while damp.

Further details and videos are available on our Caring for Your Shoes page.

Reviews
Rated 4 out of 5 by 75 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Enjoying these shoes I like these a lot. Love the availability of EEE widths in a casual loafer. The only caveat, thus Good, not Excellent rating, was the back of the shoe is loose to me, requiring a pad of some sort. August 12, 2016
Rated 3 out of 5 by Significantly smaller that other Allen Edmonds Styles I wanted to start off by saying that I love Allen Edmonds shoes. I got hooked when I walked into one of their Milwaukee stores and haven't looked back. I have 3 pairs of dress shoes (Clifton, Sanford, Park Avenue) and the moccasins. I really wanted something I could wear outside of work to casual events, and lone behold, the Sea Island. To my dismay, when I tried the shoe on upon delivery, the normal 11.5 D size I order was WAY smaller than my other 4 pairs. I figured they just needed to be broken in, so I decided to wear them to a concert last night. The show absolutely destroyed my heel and showed zero signs of forming to my foot like the other styles. It's my fault for even wearing them out, but I wanted to give them the good ol' college try. Recommendation, get this a size or 2 bigger/wider than the A.E. dress shoes. I'll probably just have to stick to the formal route with these guys. I don't know if casual is their game... Just wanted something more presentable than Sperry. July 21, 2016
Rated 1 out of 5 by Very skimpy. The shoe was very narrow and looked skimpy. I have an average width foot and had difficulty getting the shoe on. Once I did get the shoe on, my wife and I agreed that I had to return them. They looked tiny. I am a big fan of the brand, but not this time. July 19, 2016
Rated 1 out of 5 by TERRIBLE fit I have no clue who's foot this fits. The arch is so pronounced and in a extremely uncomfortable position. Haven't had time to return them yet. Hopefully there isn't a time frame. July 19, 2016

Do you recommend the use of shoe trees in the Sea Island Suede Loafers or would the use of shoe trees actually damage the soft suede?

Answer:
Shoe trees will stretch this particular suede due to it being so supple- and they may also damage the throat and or vamp of this shoe. I personally would NOT use shoe trees in this shoe. Allow it to have natural character.

Answer:
We recommend using our authentic cedar shoe tress in all of our shoes, including suede styles. They will help absorb moisture from inside the shoes and deodorize.

Answer:
I wear an 11.5E in many AE shoes. I went through probably six different shoe size/width combinations before settling at 10.5D. Another guy in the store went through several combinations, ended up only a width difference for him. All depends on whether you're going for barefoot, etc. At 10.5D, they needed one day of me wearing socks to stretch them that tiny little bit in width, and some serious manual abuse on the back of the shoe where it hits my heel, to soften it up and make it comfortable.

(Note I didn't answer "how many pairs of AE shoes do I own"... I will not confess even under torture...)

Answer:
Allen Edmonds shoes are constructed on a wide variety of lasts (foot molds) and each will feature unique fit characteristics. The Park Avenue is a welted construction style made on the 65 Last which is known to be long and narrow, and the Sea Island is a handsewn construction style made on the 555 last which has a snug fit. It is difficult to recommend a size through this channel and guarantee a proper fit because each last will fit differently based on the contours of your feet.

It is vitally important to visit an Allen Edmonds retail store or retail partner for a professional fitting to increase your chances of being fit correctly for each last and style. However, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoes in returnable condition.

I have been looking for a casual shoe to dance in on a wood floor. Leather soles work well with this, but I'm not familiar with the butyl sole. Will these dance well on wood or tile floors/

Answer:
This leather sole has been soaked in Butyl, a rubber compound that makes it resistant to water, but they are still leather and you can wear these to dance on a wood floor.

The video that goes with these suggests they are water proof -- at least to a degree. Do they come that way from the factory, or do they need treatment at home?

Answer:
The suede Sea Island is already treated to be water resistant when it comes out of the factory. However, just like any other leather shoe that would need to be polished and cared for, we recommend applying our Spray Waterproofer to the suede overtime or as needed.

I see this shoe is marketed to wear sans socks. Can you advise if the foot bed is made in such a way as to prevent the foot from sweating? I'm very interested in the shoe, but am concerned my foot will sweat and cause the shoe to show signs of wear much quicker than if a sock were worn.

The Spring/Summer/Fall in Louisiana is quite humid, so i'm concerned how well the shoe will hold up over time.

In my opinion, you can't eliminate sweat unless you wear a sandal. My other concern/suggestion with this shoe and no socks: Probably should go down one size to avoid slippage in the back of the shoe, which can occur WITH a sock.

Answer:
The sock liner is made of the reverse side of the suede upper material. The sock liner is a 3/4 length, so the forefoot and toes rest on the midsole, itself. The upper is unlined, which allows your foot to breathe better, keeping your foot from sweating as much and sweat from pooling under your foot.

Answer:
Absolutely, the Sea Island is designed to be worn without socks. It is unlined, so the shoe is breathable which helps moisture evaporate more easily. As with all of our shoes, we recommend rotating them so the leather insole can dry between wearings; the rule of thumb is wearing the same pair of shoes no more than two or three times per week. Inserting shoe trees will also help absorb extra moisture from the inside of the shoe.
