Overview

We named it the Sequoia because, like the tree, this loafer is great looking and designed to be around for years to come. Built on a wider toe last for added comfort it features a lightweight lug sole and Poron insole for long lasting comfort. Great for fall, the leather upper has water resistant properties meaning it is ready for whatever the day’s weather brings.

Rated 2 out of 5 by They should have passed on this one I love this kind of thing, so when I first saw/heard about the sequoia a year ago and saw the pictures in the style guide I was definitely drawn to it. A while back they had a shoe called the Flagstaff that I missed - too bad. I did get to see it in person at another authorized AE retailer and the antiquated & distressed look worked really well. Fortunately for me, I did get a pair of the Duke loafers, which I do tend to wear a lot on weekends these days. So I figured this was sort of their update on the Flagstaff - Duke style. But the shoes were never released last year. I was told by AE they decided not to go ahead with the planned release and decided to sell all of the inventory through the outlet stores. Ok...so I was a little surprised to see the shoe reappear this year, but I figured I would give it a fair shot. AE makes a small number of shoes completely in the DR - styles that are not GY-welted. My honest opinion of them is as follows - nothing particularly wrong with them, but nothing really great about them either. As in not really worthy of the AE name and/or price tag. Of course there are some stand-outs - the Kirkwood, Maritime and Northland, plus the Duke, come to mind quickly. The Sequoia is not included in that mix. If you are used to really hefty, heavy weight shoes from AE, you will be quite surprised - the shoe is extremely light, like the feel of a road warrior. The sole is a new kind of super lightweight vibram - some might like it, I really did not. I found it far less supportive than a traditional mini-lug, a double butyl, or a combination sole such as that used on the Normandy or Overlord. The material used on the shoe is sort of like a very lightweight sueded nubuck leather with a very uniform look, which also was much lighter in color than I had expected. In terms of fit, I think the 555 last was the way to go. I think the majority of people would say TTS. Like most of AE's handsewns, these do NOT run long. Most people would say TTS here. Some people who already go TTS on something like the 65 last might even say half a size up in length here, depends on you. All in all, disappointed. If you were looking for a very lightweight and somewhat water resistant weekend slip-on for the fall, this might be a good choice, but personally, this was a no-brainer to return. I suppose I would reconsider it in the future if the price were to come down significantly from what it is currently. I'm still confused as to why AE decided to re-release these - I wonder if the 101 in the name indicates changes from the original. September 9, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very comfortable shoe Ok my pair arrived today i tried them on and walked around on carpet so as not to dirty the sole. I am a consistent 9,5 E. The width of this shoe is typical for my width great there. Length i find for me that this shoe is a half size smaller at 9.5 i think i need a 10.E so will reorder this shoe at a later date or with the new wing tip which i might order as a 10 . E not a 9.5 E. Other wise this shoe is awesomely comfortable. Handsomely rugged looking . Looking forward to finding the exact fit. Wish there was an A&E in Tucson Arizona. August 31, 2016

Can't you make these shoe styles in a different last? In every other last, even the handsewns, I can wear an 11D or 10.5E. On this last, I need an 11EEE.

Answer:
Each last may fit differently based on the contours of your feet, and while most customers can wear the same size/width across all styles, it's not uncommon for some to require a different size/width combination depending on the style they choose. In most cases, as long as the shoes fit comfortably, the number/letter is inconsequential. Importantly, however, if you are experiencing discomfort, please contact our customer service team directly at 877-817-7615 to discuss. We'd be happy to help with your fit concerns.
