Overview

Based on our best-selling Strand, this six-eyelet balmoral has all the brogueing that signifies a truly great dress shoe. But while the design elements highlight its artisan handcrafting, it's the shoe's stunning profile that comes from the longer toe and tapered waist of the 201 last that makes it unforgettable.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Shoe in Fit, Look, and Craftsmanship My first experience with the Independence Collections was with Williams. I enjoyed that pair so much I began looking at the rest of the collection. The Bartlett has been my favorite so I bought a pair. It did not disappoint! The 65 last fits my foot very well and the soft calfskin makes it even better. It has a fantastic look, it feels great, and the craftsmanship is outstanding. It's been a great investment. Rated 5 out of 5 by Bartlett walnut is my go to shoe I have 8 pairs of AE shoes, but this is the one that gets the most wear. This shoe nails dress and casual in walnut color. I pair it with navy suit combos and dark wash straight fit jeans. I have Hopkinson, Park Ave, Warwick, and MKE in several different colors. The Warwick in oxblood is a close second in terms of versatility and looks; however, the Barlett has upgraded lining and generally feels more comfortable. I was a bit hesitant on walnut because I prefer chili and oxblood colors, but my girlfriend convinced me. The color really works off navy or any color jean wash. I have even had women cold approach me and compliment my Bartletts. I pair the shoes with AE walnut double keeper belt. I have not tried the Strand, but it looks very similar. I think the Barlett's value suffers to some extent because AE has the Strand at a lower price. If you can wait for the right sale or hit a factory second store then I recommend the Barlett. However, if you are only going for the look then the Strand is probably the right play. July 13, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent Shoe for Business Casual or a Suit Fantastic look and feel that is just a step up from the classic Strand. If you're on the fence, pull the trigger. The comfort of the independence collection is worth the extra money, especially for the soft leather that lines the inside of the shoe. June 29, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good, not great I have been very pleased with my McAllisters for several months, so when I was in the market for a pair of walnut shoes, the Strand in Walnut was my first choice. Then I stumbled upon the Bartlett, which sounded like a Strand that was slightly improved upon in many ways, and addressed the one concern I had with the 65 last, which was that it was a little cramped in the toe box. Initially I was extremely pleased with the Bartlett. The fit was perfect right out of the box, and the softer leather made the shoe feel broken in even when new. Unfortunately, the extremely soft leather has been causing me problems now that I have worn the shoes several times. The leather seems to stretch over the course of the day, and I find myself having to retie the shoes once, twice, or even three times over the course of the day to combat heal slip. The shoes have gone from being a perfect fit (a little snug if anything) to being too big over the course of a few weeks. I'm worried that if this stretching continues, I won't be able to wear the shoes anymore. As it is now, I am exhausting virtually all the spacing between the eyelets when I have to cinch the shoes up at the end of the day. When I first got the shoes, I was actually concerned they didn't have enough volume, so things have changed a lot. I didn't run into any of these issues with my McAllisters, they still fit just as they did when new. I'm thinking I should have opted for the Strands after all. June 25, 2016

Answer:
There are currently no plans to expand the color offering of the Bartlett style. We do not offer custom leather special orders at this time. We suggest taking a look at the Hopkinson or the Jefferson 2.0. These styles are both constructed on the 201 last and they are offered in Merlot which is similar to Oxblood.

Answer:
We recommend using the Dark Brown Premium Shoe Polish when polishing this style. The Manistee belt or the Dupont belt in Brown will coordinate with this style nicely.

Answer:
Allen Edmonds shoes are constructed on a wide variety of lasts (foot molds) and each will feature unique fit characteristics. It is difficult to recommend a size through this channel and guarantee a proper fit because each last will fit differently based on the contours of your feet. The McAllister is constructed on the 65 last which is the longest in length of all of our lasts; best for a long, narrow foot. The Bartlett is constructed on the 201 Last which has a higher cone, providing more room for a higher instep and a fuller forefoot width for more comfort.

It is vitally important to visit an Allen Edmonds retail store or retail partner for a professional fitting to increase your chances of being fit correctly for each last and style. However, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoes in returnable condition.

I am interested in the best fitting shoe for my feet. I tried the strand in 8D but it is too tight in the heel cup. I also tried the 8E, but that seems to overshoot the ball of my foot. Any idea how this last sizing may compare?

Answer:
The Strand is a very good shoe and with time will break in but the initial feel is stiff, as expected. The Bartlett feels broken in when you put it on as the leather seems to immediately adapt to your feet. They are the softest cap toe dress shoes I have worn. I recommend you try the Bartlett even though pricier than the Strand. I don't know about the sizing for you but I had no problems with the fit heel to toe or width.!Mike
