Overview

First introduced in 1956 and brought back by popular demand in 2009, this model is our ode to a style that dates back hundreds of years. You see, originally, the wingtip gained popularity in Scotland because its secondary trim provided extra protection from the Highland's rocky crags and its perforations allowed water to drain from shoe as a highlander traversed boggy landscapes. Over the years, this dress brogue has remained a must-have model because its traditional 5-Last fit, sturdy leather sole and the strength conveyed by the short wings instill a sense of confidence to anyone who wears them. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the perfing on the wing, throat and backstay along with the pinking and intricate toe medallion also make these shoes as refined as they are enduring. And just as it has evolved from its humble beginnings into the quintessential business shoe, the McAllister is perfect for the man who is making his way in the world, but hasn't forgot where he came from.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Reviews
Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 450 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Very Disappointed To be honest I was super excited to finally order a pair of Allen Edmonds, as I have just graduated from business school and was going to use this to treat myself. I bought a pair of McAllister Merlots when they were on sale, and they were beautiful when I took them out of the package. However, the positives ended there. I immediately noticed that the stitching of the soles are already fraying on both shoes, and the worst thing is that the shoes are uneven. The leather on the right shoe is at least half an inch longer than the left shoe, so needless to say I will be returning this. The most disappointing thing is that I can't even exchange it, as the Merlot color is no longer being sold online. Very disappointing first experience with AE, and not sure if I will shop here again. Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding Shoe After moderate wear, these shoes still feel and look amazing. I'd recommend walnut McAllisters to any fashion savvy individuals. August 17, 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good looking shoe but not as comfortable as I was led to believe Shoe is good looking and wears well. The toe area was a bit tight but loosened with time. The shoelaces are typical in that they will break any moment so you will need to get a decent pair of shoelaces to seal the deal. With the cost of this shoe I expected a little more comfort but to be honest they aren't as comfortable as my cheaper (much) shoes from Brooks Brothers. Overall decent looking shoe but not sure I would buy this again. July 17, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Looking Wingtips This is the most comfortable pair of dress shoes I've owned. They are fairly expensive, but in my opinion the quality and fact that they are made in the USA makes them worth it. Absolutely love the wingtip look and have encountered no problems with the shoes after finding my size for this last. July 15, 2016

With merlot on clearance, the McAllister will soon no longer be available in burgundy. Yes, it is available in chili, which is reddish, but isn't burgundy the classic color for a full brogue balmoral wingtip? Will you start making it in oxblood instead? (Personal taste, but I don't think this particular style looks very good in chili).

Asking merely out of interest, as I just picked up a pair in merlot on closeout.

Answer:
In my opinion, the differences are:

- there is much more brown in chili than there is merlot.
- there is quite a lot of purple in merlot and there is none in chili.
- they have a different shade of red in them.
- overall, I would say that merlot is burgundy and chili is mahogany.
- I like merlot much more than chili, especially for the McAllister.

Answer:
It's kind of nitpicky, but I'd say the Merlot is a reddish brown, where the Dark Chili is more of a brownish red.

Answer:
Merlot is a burgundy color on the cooler side of the color spectrum, and the Dark Chili is a reddish-brown with a warmer tone.

What, if any edge dressing would I use on Bourbon McAllisters with a V Tap sole? This is my first V Tap I have purchased all others have been a leather sole. Also, can I use the bourbon polish on these shoes or do I need to go with walnut?

Answer:
The currently available Bourbon polish is ideal for the shoes. The bourbon color starts out as walnut base, and is finished with black. I get excellent results by polishing with the Bourbon polish and buffing with the brush I use to polish my black shoes to maintain the darker accents.

At this time, the Bourbon McAllister is limited to the V-Tread Tap Sole. However, it is eligible to be custom ordered with a V-Tread Tap sole. Simply select the V-Tread sole under the ‘Custom Sole’ options.`

I understand that the McAllister is a Balmoral and the tongue should be covered completely when laced and tied. However, the ones that I have seem to have a slight separation and the tongue isn't completely covered. Trying to tie them to a point where the tongue is completely covered causes a lot of discomfort on the top of my feet. Its probably a nuance and insignificant, but will it affect the aging/care of the leather? For the future, should I buy a different size? I was told that I have a slight in-step and that Blucher styles will fit better, but absolutely love the look of these shoes.

Thanks!

Answer:
You can always try a wider size; Allen Edmonds provides for the cost-free and hassle-free return of unworn shoes. Do not tie your shoes so tight that they hurt! I would encourage you not to worry so much about a little bit of gapping on a balmoral; it's not unusual and no one will notice but you.

Answer:
It sounds like you may be in the wrong width or size. Typically, the eyelet flaps should either meet or form a V shape with the widest part on top being open no more than 1/4". We recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds so a master fitter that can assist you with a proper fitting as the shoes should be comfortable out of the box.

Please contact our customer service team directly at eservice@allenedmonds.com or 1-877-817-7615 (Mon-Fri 7:00AM-8PM CST) if you require further assistance.

Ordered Randolfs in 11, (79 last) too small. McAllister in 11.5 (65 last) seems too big. Is the difference the last?

Answer:
The 65 Last is the longest in length of all of our lasts; best for a long, narrow look; and often the best fit for those with high arches. The 79 Last has a tapered back portion which allows for lower, shorter vamp designs creating a low fit across the top of the foot.

The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores as each last will fit differently based on individual foot shape. If that's not possible, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoes in returnable condition.

Hi! Looking to pick up the McAllister's. I would like to know if the Bob's chili on the Manistee Dress Belt matches the chili burnished calf color on the McAllister? I need to make sure these match or find a belt that does. Cheers

Yes, the McAllister in Chili Burnished Calf actually uses the Bob's Chili leather and will coordinate with the Manistee Dress Belt in Bob's Chili. We apologize for the confusion.

Answer:
All welted Allen Edmonds shoes, such as the McAllister, feature a shank-less construction, meaning our shoes do not contain a metal shank like shoes from other brands; the sole is made of 100% leather with the exception of the rubber top lift. One major benefit of this type of construction is that Allen Edmonds shoes can pass through airport metal detectors without setting them off. This construction also allows us to offer light weight and flexible styles that our customer's prefer.

From what I can tell, the only shoes for which Merlot is still an option are the McAllister (both with the regular leather sole and with the combination tap sole) and the Park Avenue. For all the other shoes, Oxblood is available instead (Park Avenue is available in both Oxblood and Merlot). Some of the loafers are available in Burgundy.

I think this is a shame, because I think the Merlot offers a slightly different aesthetic to the Oxblood. The Oxblood is a much brighter dark red, while the Merlot is both more subdued and, I think, a bit more purplish. The Merlot is also different from either shade of Chili, because it doesn't have a brownish tint to it.

So, I hope you're going to keep selling a broader range of shoes in Merlot. At some point, I'd like to pick up a Carlyle in burgundy, but I think the Oxblood is just too bright.
