Overview

The Strand is Allen Edmonds CEO & President Paul Grangaard's favorite style! The relationship began in the early 1980s when, as a newly-minted banker eager for overseas experience, he had the good fortune of being transferred to Frankfurt, Germany. Given his age, inexperience and the language challenge inherent in the job, he was looking for a "credibility-enhancer" and some needed gravitas. So he bought his first pair of this distinctly American version of the classic senior executive's cap-toe brogue. When he became head of Allen Edmonds in 2008, Paul made sure they were one of the first styles reintroduced in the Timeless Classics Collection. Built on the 5-Last, these balmorals are full of personality, thanks to an array of impressive perforations plus a striking medallion on the cap toe. Perfectly complementing its design elements is this model's orderly and architectural form, which effortlessly conveys an air of achievement as well as refined elegance. This means, just as it did for Paul, that when you put on a pair of Strands, you'll elevate your game at the same time.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Our new Dark Chili and Oxblood burnished leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue. Follow by using a soft cloth to apply our Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap which cleans all smooth leather shoes while restoring the leather's natural oils.

Further details and videos are available on our Caring for Your Shoes page.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Very Good, as Expected Classic style, comfortable, and polish up nicely week after week for years. Just like all my other pairs. September 21, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by This shoe is a work of art! And it is extremely comfortable. I feel like a million bucks wearing this and it is perfect to wear for both formal and casual clothing. This one I'm keeping forever! August 27, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Join the AE club! I bought my first pair of AE shoes for a birthday present to myself. I had my eye on a pair of Strands (walnut) for quite sometime. Needless to say, you get what you pay for. Quality. The shoe fits like a glove. I was professionally fitted at a local AE store which helps. I actually learned I have one foot larger than the other... took 49 years to figure that out. As a result of this fine experience, I can't see myself buying any other brand of shoe. I get compliments all the time... Other owners of AE shoes will recognize yours too. Keep an eye open for sales, while I paid full price for my pair; I don't regret it. Here is the bonus: They are made in the U.S.A. August 14, 2016
Rated 1 out of 5 by Disappointed I own six pair of AE shoes. Five of the six are on the 65 Last (Strand & Park Ave & McAllister) which fits my foot really well. Unfortunately, my pair of dark brown Strands in 8.5E do not fit well despite putting the time (1yr) into wearing them and trying to break them in. They are becoming progressively more uncomfortable for some reason which is the total opposite of the rest of my AE shoes that seem to only feel more broken in and comfortable with time. Specifically, the leather feels hard and the toe box is oddly narrow and crooked and crunching my toes. Despite being properly measured at a store, I must admit, this pair just never felt as good as my other shoes from the beginning. I know these are handmade shoes and there are natural variations but something is really off with this pair which is making it impossible for me to wear them. It's a shame because they are beautiful and minimally used. I hope something reasonable can be done to fix this situation. August 6, 2016

First of all, nice new blue and grey colors for the Strand and Cornwallis! Both look very interesting. But they raise a few questions for me:

1. Is the midnight navy the same shade that you used for the Father's Day special? From the product photos it looks lighter and more burnished, with more variations in tone across the shoe. Is that right? Anyway, it looks very elegant.

2. I've noticed recently that the Nordstrom exclusive chili Strand is no longer available on the Nordstrom website. Has Nordstrom ceased carrying it? If so, are you discontinuing it altogether, or will you start selling it from your own stores and website? I know that there are a few chili Strands floating around the Shoebank.

3. The grey looks like it's a fairly light grey, or at least on the lighter side of medium. Is that right?

4. Are you working on a new medium-brown shade to replace the defunct bourbon? It seems that there must be room for a shade of brown that is darker than walnut, lighter than burnished brown, and less red than chili.

Thanks for your consideration of these questions!

Answer:
Thank you for your interest. Photo-shoots tend to make colors look lighter because of the bright lights and white backgrounds used to be able to show the details of the footwear. The Navy is a true dark navy and the Gray is similar to a charcoal gray. The Navy version is the same leather we had earlier this year. Burnishing will accentuate dark and low lights on the shoes. We recommend continuing to check out our emails or follow our social media channels for updates on future color offerings or product news.

I use their walnut polish for this pair. I do have a brown that I got for the burnished toe but haven't had to use it.

Note: I mostly use a neutral conditioner and polish infrequently so as to not cake polish on the shoes.

Answer:
Neutral would just add a clear coat of polish and maintain the exact look of your shoes. The walnut would add color to your shoes that would help hide any scratches or blemishes.

Answer:
The best width is the one that fits your foot. The only way to tell is to measure the width of your foot on a Brannock device. It will tell you the proper length and width of your feet. Measure both feet because most people have one foot longer than the other. Make sure that you get shoes that fit your longest foot. Make sure that you are standing when your foot is measured to ensure that you get an accurate measurement. Most shoe stores will have a Brannock device. I was in a department store and there was no sales clerk around and a Brannock device was laying on the floor, so I stood there and measured myself. Every time I find a Brannock device, I just double check to make sure my size hasn't changed.

Answer:
Size and width are very individual attributes. one person may feel a 10.5 in a D is perfect for them, while it may be too tight for someone else. I always have to get my shoes in EEE. That is due to how my foot is shaped. The biggest problem with buying shoes in regular department stores is that they typically will only sell them in a medium width. Have your foot properly sized at an Allen Edmonds store if your unsure of what width is best for your foot.

Answer:
It depends on the shape of your feet. It is vitally important to visit an Allen Edmonds retail store or retail partner for a professional fitting to increase your chances of being fit correctly for each last and style. However, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoes in returnable condition.

So far I've had the best luck with AE shoes that are made large to accommodate an orthotic insert. But I really like the look of these shoes and would like to own a pair. I understand the construction is the same with orthotic and non-orthotic shoes--the orthotic versions just have more room. So I'm wondering if I might be able to just buy a larger size in these and use an orthotic? I'm a size 12D generally; if I were to use a standard AE orthotic, what size should I buy? (Don't worry: I intend to try on and buy at an AE store; but I'd like to be prepared when I visit the store.)

I use a custom orthotic in all my allen edmonds shoes (I use an orthotic made specially for dress shoes and the orthotic is sleeker). I would go 1/2 size up. After wearing an orthotic for 10-15 times, the sole gives way to the orthotic and they are very comfortable.

Answer:
It is difficult to recommend a size through this channel and guarantee a proper fit because each last will fit differently based on the contours of your feet. However, if the shoe is fit large enough, orthotic inserts can be used in almost any of our shoes. It is important to keep in mind that the use of an orthotic will alter the way a shoe fits; we recommend trying on your orthotics with the shoes or visiting one of our master fitters at our retail stores as they can recommend the best possible fit.
