Overview

The Strand is Allen Edmonds CEO & President Paul Grangaard's favorite style! The relationship began in the early 1980s when, as a newly-minted banker eager for overseas experience, he had the good fortune of being transferred to Frankfurt, Germany. Given his age, inexperience and the language challenge inherent in the job, he was looking for a "credibility-enhancer" and some needed gravitas. So he bought his first pair of this distinctly American version of the classic senior executive's cap-toe brogue. When he became head of Allen Edmonds in 2008, Paul made sure they were one of the first styles reintroduced in the Timeless Classics Collection. Built on the 5-Last, these balmorals are full of personality, thanks to an array of impressive perforations plus a striking medallion on the cap toe. Perfectly complementing its design elements is this model's orderly and architectural form, which effortlessly conveys an air of achievement as well as refined elegance. This means, just as it did for Paul, that when you put on a pair of Strands, you'll elevate your game at the same time.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Our new Dark Chili and Oxblood burnished leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue. Follow by using a soft cloth to apply our Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap which cleans all smooth leather shoes while restoring the leather's natural oils.

Reviews
Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 405 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic shoe. The right fit is paramount For my first pair of Allen Edmonds, I was torn between the Park Avenues, Strands and McAllisters. In the end I decided on the strands because they seemed the most versatile. Great with a suit, and equally great dressed down. I won't go into detail about the shoe itself because plenty of people have done that. This is the nicest shoe I gotten so far, and the experience was very different than any other I've had in terms of shoes. For the most part, I wear a size 11. Almost all my shoes from other brands are size 11 and I've never really had any major issues. Most other brands don't offer the widths that AE does, and that is why you need to take your time and try pretty much every size close to what you normally wear. Even a whole size down, but wider. I tried a 10.5 and it was too tight. I felt the same with an 11. The D sizes seem to be too narrow for my feet. When pushing for a wider 11 like an E, or EE, those felt too big. The first store I visited had an 10EEE and that actually fit. I've never been able to fit into any size 10, so the 10EEE fitting was strange to say the least. I settled on a 10EEE because they didn't have other sizes available. That was a bit of a mistake on my part and the part of the salesperson. A trip to a different store addressed those issues. I was able to try more sizes and finally found the one that was right for me. A 10.5EE. The E, EE, and EEE widths are not for people with feet like elephants. I thought maybe the widths would be drastically different, but they really aren't. They just give you a little more room so you can get the perfect fit. The moral of my story is that you need to take your time. Don't feel pressured to buy a shoe because it seems to fit when you haven't tried everything. Even if they don't have the particular shoe you want, try others that are made from the same last. My Strands had to be ordered because the store didn't have the 10.5EE. I knew they would fit because another style made on the same last fit properly. In case anyone is wondering, I bought mine from the Madison Avenue store. The person who helped me took the time and made sure I was happy. I must have tried on shoes and walked around the store for at least 30 minutes. No pressure, just great service. That's the only store I will be visiting going forward. August 20, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding look. I liked the Strand in oxblood so much that I just purchased a pair in dark chili. The shoe is a piece of art, basically; comfortable right out of the box; and appears to be bulletproof in construction. Couple that with Allen Edmonds' customer service, where I know that I will get the exact product I want, always; and these shoes are worth every penny. August 15, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 Work of Art These shoes are true works of art. I own a black and a walnut. Everywhere I go wearing the walnut someone stops me to ask about, or comment on, the shoes. Great wear with a suit. June 30, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Bourbon color looks good with a lot of colors including black. I have many, many pairs of Allen Edmonds, these have become my new favorite. June 19, 2015

I just acquired a new pair of Strands in walnut. The shoes are beautiful, and the fit feels great so far, but they squeak. I'm pretty certain the squeak is restricted to the tongue/laces area. Can the squeak be stopped, or are my shoes defective?

Answer:
Thank you for your questions about squeaking shoes.

Squeaking sometimes occurs on new shoes because Allen Edmonds uses authentic leathers such as calf skin. When two pieces of new leather rub against each other, such as the leather lining, upper leather and /or tongue leathers, a slight squeaking may occur. The fix is usually quite simple; general wear will eliminate the noise or you can apply leather lotion as a lubricant. Lotion can be found at AllenEdmonds.com, most shoe shine stands or simply visit an Allen Edmonds store and have a store associate apply the lotion for you.

Importantly, if you have any further concerns or needs please contact our online customer service team directly at eservice@allenedmonds.com or 1-877-817-7615 (Mon-Fri 7:00AM-8PM CST).

If I wear an 11D in the Neumok (brown distressed leather) and it fits perfectly, then do you suggest sizing up a bit for the Strand? I've heard that the leather used for the brown Neumok is a lot more flexible compared to most other AE shoes.

Answer:
That is correct, while the Neumok and the Strand are constructed on the same 65 Last the fit is different. The Neumok is an unconstructed style, which means it is unlined and it will be more flexible. The Strand is lined and will not be as flexible as the Neumok. However, some customers require a different size while others don't so it is difficult to recommend a size through this channel and guarantee a proper fit because each style will fit differently based on the contours of your feet.

We recommend visiting an Allen Edmonds retail store if possible for a professional fitting. But keep in mind also that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoes in returnable condition.

Answer:
All Allen Edmonds welted styles, such as the Strand, include a pair of cotton flannel shoe bags. Shoe trees are not included with any of our shoes. However, both shoe bags and shoe trees can be purchased on our website.

We recommend Full-Toe Cedar Shoe Trees for all Allen Edmonds styles as they are contoured to complement our shoes. Our Combination Shoe Trees are more flexible and can be used with any other brand of shoe.

While you can try to re-color them yourself, the best option is always to send them back to AE for recrafting. They will come back to you looking almost as good as new.

I own a McTavish in dublin cognac. Would the bourbon or the brown burnished Strand provide greater color contrast?

Answer:
The Brown burnished calfskin used for the Strand is a dark brown color similar so dark chocolate. The Bourbon Burnished color starts as a Walnut leather and it's darkened with special dyes to achieve the dark tan color, however it is not as dark as the Brown leather. The Cognac Leather has somewhat of a reddish tan undertone.

The Brown Burnished calf would probably provide more contrast, only because It would not be considered a Tan leather, but keep in mind colors descriptions can be very subjective. Please feel free to contact our online customer service team directly at eservice@allenedmonds.com or 1-877-817-7615 (Mon-Fri 7:00AM-8PM CST) if you would like some leather samples.

Just purchased a new pair of Strand shoes. I live on the Oregon Coast and my shoes will see a lot of wet ground a number of months each year. I have seen leather sole adhesive covers for leather soled cowboy boots in a cobbler's store before. Is this worth considering?

Answer:
Many customers choose to add rubber tap soles to their leather soled shoes as this tends to hold up better in wet conditions. For this reason, we offer 'V-Tread Combination Tap Soles' to be custom ordered with most of our dress shoes, including the Strand.

The V-tread Combination Tap Sole features a leather base with a rubber insert which provides the look of a regular leather sole, but with added traction. It is generally more durable and has a longer lifespan than a leather sole and so it should hold up better on irregular or wet surfaces. Also, because the rubber is a softer material it absorbs impact better and helps provide more traction.

The different colorations you are seeing on our photos are a result of the lighting used when the shoes are photographed; taking also into account that based on our hand burnishing technique used to finish each shoe, colors will also vary. The byproduct of our hand-crafting process results in a unique and special pair of shoes each time.

Is the brown burnished calf the same tone as the brown burnished calf McAllister or Park Avenue? Your photo of the brown Strand makes it look much duller, and somewhat metallic. I guess it's just the lighting, but it's hard to tell, given that there's only one photo.

Thank you for your feedback. We are currently in the process of reshooting several styles, including the Strand, and we will have new photography online before the Spring. In the meantime, you can continue to use the McAllister style as reference for the finish of the leathers; the same type of Walnut and Brown leather is used on both the McAllister and the Strand.

Is there an upcharge for selecting a different color? I'd assume not since, again, the shoes are made to order. (Picking a black hide vice a brown one seems simple enough)
