Overview

Surrounded by protected forests and sweeping farmland while boasting a population of a little over 1,000, Ashton, Idaho is located in the heart of the open-spaces that signifies the American West. Suitably, the style that bears the town's name is the most spacious footwear we offer. Building this five-eyelet blucher on the 8-Last creates the shoe's extra depth, which can be increased by removing the insole. This means that the Ashton can accommodate a custom orthotic or just provide that extra space for those looking for an unrestricted fit. The raised stitching on the split-toe and vamp coupled with the pre-stitched split-reverse welt gives these shoes a fresh appearance that will be at home in a casual office environment or on the weekend with khakis or jeans. We don't care if you chose them because you need the extra room or just want it; either way we know you'll be as big a fan of the Ashton as we have always been.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Conditioner Cleaner to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 111 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by If comfort is essential, these work great I am not like most people in that I have health condition that requires me to wear very comfortable shoes. Therefore, I have to be very careful with what shoes I wear. I was skeptical about these shoes, but I was told by the AE salesman that these were among their most comfortable. I compared these to the Delray Dress shoes but these just seemed for fit much better for my feet (I love the way the Delray's look too). They do take a good week or two to break in, and they feel very hard at first, especially in the toe area. However, they do feel like a glove after about 2 weeks of wear. These shoes look great in almost any pants and can be worn with a suit or on a casual day. I bought mine in Chili, and they look amazing and shiny in the sunshine. I also love that the insole can be replaced, further lengthening how long these shoes can be used. Some people have complained these feel heavy, but that hasn't been my experience. The only downside to these is that the leather is a little easy to get damaged, so make sure you take good care of them and don't abuse them. $385 is a lot of money, but not when I realized these could last for 8 years or longer. Bottom line: these are fantastic shoes if you have a medical condition and want something that looks great in almost any environment. This was my first pair of AE shoes and I think I'm now a customer for life. January 24, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Shoe for Orthotic Users I have owned more than a dozen Allen Edmonds shoes over the years and other high-end brands as well. The problem with many of these shoes is that they just don't accommodate orthotics very well. It seems you either have to give up looks or deal with pain if you want to wear a nice dress shoe. Allen Edmonds helped greatly with this problem with the Ashton. It is a good-looking and well-built shoe that can go from dress casual to more dressy fairly easily. The best thing is there is flexibility in terms of arch support. The insole that comes with the shoes has significant support on its own. If that's not enough, you can easily use your own orthotic. I wear these shoes multiple days every week all day long and have done so for seven years. They still look and feel great. I had them re-crafted earlier this year and they look like new again. I am so happy with them, I bought them in brown and am now considering another color. The Ashton is not as sleek as some other AE models, but for all-day comfort and style they are a great choice. You will own these shoes for a decade or more. November 19, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Squeaking is distracting Like many others before me have said this is a great looking, comfortable shoe from a company with a solid name for quality. This was my attempt at moving to a nicer pair of shoes, my problem is my "nice" shoes squeak incessantly. I saw the reviews prior but they seemed to happen to some and not others so I took the advice and used the lotion on them followed by saddle soap. Neither have helped so far but they are still not broken in so I can only hope it gets better. It is hard for me to understand how a company can engineer and test something and knowing they make this sound still stand behind them and claim a premium product. November 11, 2015

Specifically, I'm wondering if the soles are built to 'break in' the same way, with the footbed conforming to the shape of the foot over time. Because they use orthotics, I'm thinking, they can't be exactly the same, but maybe they are similar?

Answer:
Yes, they are constructed the same way with our traditional foot bed in which we apply a layer of shock-absorbent cork between the insole and the outsole of our shoes. The Orthotic Collection is simply designed to have more room to accommodate an orthotic. The removable insole included is a foam cushion added for extra comfort, but can be removed to insert your own. The cork layer underneath will still act as a comfortable cradle for your whole foot and the resulting imprint will be totally unique to your foot shape.

Answer:
We use the VIP rubber sole on the Ashton because it complements the dress look of this style while still offering more shock absorption than a standard leather sole. Vibram rubber soles have a deeper tread pattern that is typically more suitable for casual styles and boots.

I have seen a few examples of the Ashton with a semi circular indentation/mark in the area of the shoe above the cap but below the laces. The mark appears to be the leather below it. I assumed this wasn't normal but I have heard from several owners who said their shoes were like that. Is this mark in fact normal for a split toe shoe? Should there be a visible mark showing where the leather from around the shoe ends?

This pattern has always been like this, but It is more noticeable on lighter burnished leathers. The burnishing brings out the outline of the materials in that area of the shoe.

My AE shoes without orthotics are a perfect 12B. With an orthotic insert in a non-orthotic shoe I need a 12D to fit the orthotic. What shoe size would you recommend in the Ashton Derby? Thanks.

Answer:
Allen Edmonds shoes are constructed on a wide variety of lasts (foot molds) and each will feature unique fit characteristics. For this reason, it is difficult to recommend a size through this channel and guarantee a proper fit because each last will fit differently based on the contours of your feet. The Ashton is constructed on the 678 Last which has a fuller fit and additional depth to accommodate your own orthotic insole.

The best way to get a proper fit with your orthotic inserts is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores to increase your chances of being fit correctly. However, keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoes in returnable condition.

Answer:
The Ashton typically uses the 30" black dawhyde as a replacement lace. If you have a larger foot above a 120 D a 33" lace is often recommended.

Answer:
The Ashton and the Benton styles are both constructed on the 678 last and as a result will have the same fit. The 678 last is modeled for the average foot but with a fuller fit and additional depth to accommodate an Allen Edmonds orthotic insole. We also recommend checking out our style made on the 511 last which is similar to the 678 last from heel to the ball of the foot, yet with a more rounded, fuller fitting toe; the 511 last styles, however, do not feature removable insoles. By selecting shoes manufactured on the same last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit. However, each style can fit differently based on individual foot shape.

The best way to get a proper fit is to visit a master fitter in one of our retail stores. We suggest ordering the size recommended by our master fitters. Keep in mind that products purchased on allenedmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoe in returnable condition.

Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds.

Absolutely, the Ashton style was designed with a dressy fit in mind, but it can be paired with either a suit or with jeans or khakis; they are the perfect foundation on which to build a great outfit. This style also features our VIP rubber sole, which is the most cushioning of the rubber sole options and perfect for those who are on their feet all day.
