Angels Wear Allen Edmonds Shoes
Stories from the Allen Edmonds Man
In my shoes: Volume 1 - Story 4
I have worn Allen Edmonds for years. But this story is not about the shoes. It's about the people who make the shoes. Back in 2009, I cold-called Allen Edmonds. I am a direct marketing specialist, and I was in the Port Washington-area and thought I would see if they needed some help. As luck would have it, they were searching for just such a partner. Sometimes karma takes over. This was one of those times.
We worked on some small initiatives in the fall of 2009 and began gearing up for some bigger efforts. That's when the karma cup spilled. My wife developed cancer for the second time. It was serious. I guess all cancer is serious, but her diagnosis was not favorable. Shortly after her diagnosis, the company I was with learned of the situation and just after Christmas I was “let go.” I could write about the company situation but that would detract from the story. Suffice it to say, I had more important things to focus on.
A few days after the New Year, my cell phone rang. It was a call from my main contact in marketing at Allen Edmonds. He said he tried to call me about a project and the company informed him that I was no longer there. They mentioned that they had planned to inform him but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Anyway, when we spoke on the phone I informed him that I was let go. There was a short pause and I was sure he was going to say something like that's too bad and wish me well. Instead, he told me that I was his guy and that the trust we built up meant a lot. He proposed that we work together and he allowed me to partner with any company I deemed appropriate to get the work done. After we finished our conversation I stared at the phone. I couldn't believe it. Out of work only three weeks during the start of the Great Recession and facing mounting hospital bills was frightening. I didn't know my guardian angel wore Allen Edmonds shoes.
Flash forward a few years. We have worked together as true partners ever since that phone call. My wife has beaten her cancer, successfully completed her radiation therapy, and her scans have all been clear to date. I live well over 150 miles from Port Washington and I could easily send Allen Edmonds samples in the mail and discuss changes over the phone, but I always find time to drive them to AE HQ for review. It's the least I can do for what they have done for my family.
They say you can judge a man by his shoes. I think you can judge an entire company by the people who work there, and those people wear Allen Edmonds.
