Factory-Seconds

212 unique steps and 100 pairs of hands

That's what it takes to handcraft an Allen Edmonds shoe. Sometimes mistakes happen. When you add in our great attention to detail and the high quality-control standards we maintain, the result is a Factory-Second. These lightly blemished shoes have minor defects such as a small stain, nick in the sole or slightly askew sewing. Though they last as long as our other shoes and are recraftable, they don't make the grade as an Allen Edmonds "First Quality" shoe.

Some things remain timeless

That's how we feel about our traditional 212-step manufacturing process that has been the basis for handcrafting Allen Edmonds Goodyear welted shoes since 1922.

Cutting

Cutting

Leather is cut by hand using sharp metal dies.

Sewing

Sewing

Sewers use special needles depending on the pieces they are combining. Some require single needles while others use double needles.

Corking

Corking

Heated cork is spread throughout the insole cavity prior to the sole being applied.

Burnishing

Burnishing

Lasts are removed and shoes move to the finishing room where waxes are applied to the leather and laces attached.
