Overview

Why It's Great

When we asked Jim Dayton, an award-winning architect and protégé of Frank Gehry, to design our new retail store prototype, we never planned for him to create a shoe for us. But, by using authentic materials in his store design like Wisconsin red birch and touches of the cork that cushions our shoes, he did such a great job capturing our company's personality that we asked him to bring the same aesthetic sensibilities to a pair of shoes. And we're sure glad we did.

How It's Made

In creating this seven-eyelet blucher boot, Dayton used his architect's sharp-eye to perfectly balance the silhouette of the rounded, full toe with the extended calf-high upper. Similarly, the orange leather lining, toe medallion and perforations on the back-stay and wingtip combine to accentuate the boot's heartier features, like the Butyl leather sole, and create a blueprint for both elegance and strength.

How to Wear It

Tucked under blue jeans or a blue suit, they present a stylish profile while providing the type of ankle stability and support not usually found in a dress shoe. A truly original boot made by a one-of-a-kind artisan, the Dalton is the perfect foundation on which to build a great outfit.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Our new Dark Chili and Oxblood burnished leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue. Follow by using a soft cloth to apply our Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap which cleans all smooth leather shoes while restoring the leather's natural oils.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still breaking in! I wear a comfortable 9.5 E in the 65 last. This one fits almost the same, but slightly tighter in the toe box, but it also could mean that the shoe isn’t fully broken in yet. After about 6 wears it’s starting to feel comfortable. The boot itself is probably one of the best looking boots I’ve ever seen or owned. I bought it in walnut and oxblood. After it’s broken in, it feels great and after about the 3 wear, I was able to lace them up tighter. Such a beautiful boot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality Love the look and the quality of these boots. Only worn them a couple of times so far so they're still a bit squeaky but they're wearing in nicely. Very comfortable...after the first hour. At first I thought I should get the rubber sole option but after having worn these boots with the leather sole, I'm glad I got them. They're not slippery and the leather sole adds to the style.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great, but painful I ordered these boots some time ago but haven't gotten around to writing up a formal review. Upon receipt, these boots were amazing. The fit and finish were what I expected having purchased Strands and McAllisters in the past. There was no loose grains present and the overall construction of the boot was perfect. The brogue pattern and stitching were something to admire. To my dismay, that's where the satisfaction ends. For the first few hours of wearing the boots, I knew the break-in period would be a challenge. I chalked it up to the fact that the leather needed time to form to my foot. However, that was not the case. I constantly found myself in situations where I couldn't wait to take these boots off. In fact, these boots have only been worn a handful of times due to the discomfort I've experienced. As others have noted in some of the reviews, there is a design flaw located where the bottom of the tongue and shoe meet, a rather pronounced seam. The seam will start to create a pain point which is not noticeable at first, but as time goes by, becomes almost unbearable. Mind you, I've worn these boots in an office setting for ~7 hrs a day. Given the setting the boots have been utilized in, they haven't seen many miles either. I really wanted to like these boots and planned on enjoying them for years to come. However, due to unbearable seam, these boots now reside in the closet. Quite a shame considering the amount of money spent on such a beautiful boot. EDIT: I've contacted AE Customer Service and they've requested that I send them in for inspection. Here's to hoping that I can just swap them out for a different style that doesn't share the same build construction.

Size

How does a 9d size in McNeil 2.0 compare to the Dalton boot?
Asked by: Joseph
The Macneil 2.0 is constructed on the 97 Last, which is the best fit for the average foot. The 97 last is one of Allen Edmonds early lasts, and has a soft, slightly pointed toe. It lays flatter in the toe area for a classic American look. The Dalton is constructed on the 511 Last, and this last is similar to the 97 last from heel to the ball of the foot, yet with a more rounded, fuller fitting toe. The 511 last is used in many of our boots because of the added room in the toe box. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

Does shell Cordovan burgundy changes to brown over the years of wearing the boot?

What color in manistee belt would you recommend for Daulton Cordovan boots in burgundy

Asked by: Anonymous
We recommend the Cordovan Tab belt in Burgundy Shell Cordovan for the Dalton in the same leather. If you're interested in the Manistee, we suggest Oxblood which should coordinate well but keep in mind it may not be an exact match. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

Can you waterproof Cordovan leather using a water repellent spray?

I just order a pair of Dalton Cordovan Dress boots and I was wondering if it would be possible to make them water resistant. I brought my oxfords to a shoe service shop and they instructed me to use a water repellent spray, allowing the shows to be water proof for three months. Because Cordovan leather is different, would you still be able to waterproof them with spray or some other material?
Asked by: Anonymous
We don't recommend using waterproofing products on fine leather. Leather is a naturally porous material and using those products will seal the pores which will affect the quality and integrity of the leather. It will also prevent blooming which occurs naturally on Shell Cordovan. The only product recommended for Shell Cordovan is our Cordovan Care Cream which is specifically formulated for this type of leather. Our Spray Waterproofer should only be used on Suede, Nubuck, or Fabric shoes. To protect your investment, we highly recommend SWIMS overshoes if you expect inclement conditions, or wearing appropriate weatherproof footwear if rain or snow are forecast. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions.
