LGA Wingtip Derby is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 297.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great shoes Let me get direct to the point for why not the perfect score: 1) I’m having a hard time believing that there shoes are Bench Welted, like the website is listing. It had a removable sole and underneath it, there is a pour on material or some other type of foam. To my understanding, that’s more of what you get on a speed welt and feather welt. Not that there is anything wrong with these other constructions, but it was listed on the website as bench welt when I purchased it. Please, AE, double check the specs. 2) The removable insole I got on my shoes had a textile lining different than what’s on the picture on the website. The website looks to have a inside where leather is the point of contact with the foot. I feel that I got an inferior insole compared to the one on the picture. Now, for the neutral, although I know these are made outside of the USA, mine didn’t have any indication of where they were made, like all my other AE shoes. Now for the positive, everything else. These shoes are extremely comfortable and light and they look great. I can see them becoming a regular in my rotation. The nonslip soles and the cushioned midsoles make them the perfect candidate for commuting. Yet they retain a classic look. They are extremely versatile. From denim to chinos, to slacks or even to dress down a suit. Just fantastic shoes. The comfort of sneakers, the looks of dress shoe. It’s really hard to beat these shoes for daily wear. If they had the leather topped insoles, like many AE sneakers, they would be even better. The welt thing, if I’m right, it was just an honest mistake. They run true to size. I wear a 10.5D on the 65 last, and the 10.5D on these fit me perfectly. They feel very comfortable right out of the box. I don’t foresee needing break in time with them. I got these during the flash sale, thus I maximized value. However, even at regular price, these shoes provide great value as well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mildly Disappointed, But The Price Was Right. I'm a complete novice to the world of quality shoes so its no surprise AE was one of my first stops and, for the price paid, I'm contented overall with my purchase. The shoes were shipped promptly and I got them at a huge discount which is deeply appreciated. For my first pair of GYW shoes and my second pair of quality footwear, I could have done far worse. That said, I wasn't wowed like I'd hoped to have been and I feel like I may have just bought into the Sears of shoes and I dearly hope that is not the case. To illustrate, I offer this case comparison. Prior to these shoes, I purchased some factory seconds boots from TAFT. The price point is comparable to what I would have paid for the AEs without the additional sale of which I was also able to take advantage. Before continuing, I swear to all that is true that I'm not a paid shill for their company or was enticed in any way to write this review, but I was so unabashedly blown away by my experience with them I can't help but compare it to my AE experience. What I got from them was a delightful shipping box emblazoned with TAFT all over it and inside was a beautifully crafted inner box with my attractive boot box cradled in the center and all kinds of fun messages inside like "get ready for compliments!" and "today's the day!" and helpful suggestions for trying on my boots to ensure I didn't accidentally damage them and be unable to return them (should that have been an option). Inside the box I got a pair of amazing looking boots, a big cloth dust bag, and a shoe horn. If these weren't chelseas, I'm sure there would have been some extra laces too. I probably would have been happy with just an empty box at that rate as the impression it made was quite positive to say the least. This, gentlefriends, is how you make a customer. My AE shoes (which I got today) by comparison came in a nondescript cardboard box within which the shoe box and packing slip barely fit. No points list, but none gained either. My AE shoe box itself also looks rather attractive and the wrapping paper was a lovely color, which made for a good presentation, but no dust bags, no extra laces or anything, and barely enough paper to fill the shoes ended up leading to a very uninspiring first impression. Inspecting the shoes (Walnut color), I noticed almost immediately a mark on my left shoe, a tiny white surface scratch perhaps, as well as a noticeable black bar on the back heel of the same shoe. The right shoe seemed fine but I can tell the staining and coloring across the back heels of the shoes isn't very consistent. Its neither wholesale hideous nor very noticeable at a distance I'm sure, but still, not exactly great. Both shoes have a bit of creasing but nothing egregiously off-putting. My first impression was "did I get factory seconds by accident? Maybe I should return these." Then i thought 'well, I might as well put them on". Thankfully, they fit wonderfully from what I can tell and were definitely comfortable to wear around my house. I'm sure they will take some breaking in to be 100% but I was happy enough with the fit to not want to risk playing the long odds on returns and exchanges from what I've read in other reviews. I also paid less than factory seconds price thanks to a huge sale stacked with a bonus sale also going on at the same time so I guess I'm okay with my shoes and I just hope they last. I was hoping to be swept off my feet but instead I feel like I got a bunch of half-dead roses delivered in a paper bag as compared to my TAFT experience where I felt like my boots were delivered by a guy in a tuxedo and included some scented stationary. Way above and beyond for what I was expecting for factory seconds. Pitched through my window at speed and in a burlap sack would probably have still been alright. So while I will speak well of my AEs and will gratefully have them resoled and recrafted in the future, I'm not sure if this is the start of a beautiful relationship or an unfortunate one night stand. Somebody clearly loved my TAFT boots and somebody clearly didn't love my AEs. I will recommend AEs to my friends but not without reservations. I'm just a very small fish and don't really matter, but please don't forget about us and please don't lose touch with us either. Going above and beyond, even in just a small way (No dust bag? Smells of impersonal big box lovelessness) is how you get people coming back for more. I might buy more AEs, but I also might not. Maybe the higher end shoes are where the love is at and I just got some poor man's plebeian offering. Being a comparatively poor man and a modern day plebeian I guess they fit the bill. By contrast, I will almost certainly buy some more TAFT offerings with aplomb and delight and would recommend them unquestioningly. In conclusion, don't get killed by the competition, AE. I'd hate to see you wither and blow away as I want to love your products and services and wish you good health and good business in the times ahead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected. I needed decent business casual shoes that I could wear in Ohio's rainy, snowy winter. Reading the reviews, I expected a quality product, but a level or two below the Allen Edmond standard. Well, this is my first pair of AE, and the materials are at least on par with, or better than my Meermin and Thursday Boots calf skins. Looking at the leather under a digital microscope (I'm a nerd) reveals a beautiful top grain (maybe full grain?) surface with unadulterated pores. I see a few small lines and imperfections up close, which is why I guess people complain they aren't to AE standard, but I will take substandard top grain over corrected grain leather any day. Especially for the sale price. Shoe cream and polish will correct any imperfections, anyway. I don't expect these to last as long as a shoe with welted leather soles, but if I end up loving them, these can be re crafted with new rubber soles, and I expect the uppers to last. Again, quality leather. I've read in the reviews the uppers are thinner and feel lest robust than the traditional AEs, but I suspect that is an illusion created by the lighter rubber soles, which make the shoes feel incredibly light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My frist AE purchase- very pleased! I bought these when they were on sale for around $179 specifically in response to my ongoing flat-foot issues. I'll summarize my personal health journey at the bottom, but first- let's talk quality! I could not believe how amazing it was to have a shoe that was able to accommodate my custom orthotic AND look like a million bucks! I've never owned a pair of AE's, so I was amazed at the lack of wrinkling after wearing them 7-days a week for three weeks straight! I used Venetian Leather Balm, Saphir Cream Polish, Saphir Wax Polish, and Saphir High Gloss Wax Polish to ensure they were well cared for (But if I were you, I would definitely go with Saphir's Nappa Leather Balm, as it won't darken the shoe). I've also purchased a pair of Woodlore Cedar Shoe Trees to ensure they were kept nice and sturdy when drying. I can definitely say that without a doubt- these shoes are the best I've ever owned! Now, how did I get here? Well, I have flat feet. That means that I was in need of a last that was able to accommodate a custom orthotic and was available in an EEE. The removable insole allowed for my 4/4 orthotic to fit in perfectly, with no pressure on my foot against the uppers or against the sides. Luckily, the backstays supported my ankle so nicely that my knee pain went away well before receiving my orthotics. I honestly couldn't be happier. P.S. - If you need extra room for your orthotics, be sure to check out the 511G (this one), the 2623, and the 42N, as they all have that additional 3mm of added space for an insole. Cheers.

Their description states a 360º Bench Welt construction, but you repeatedly contrast them with your more premium "welted" shoes...

Are they "Bench Welted" beneath the sole, with a rubber sole glued on? Are their uppers stitched together, or glued? Also, are they full grain leather?
    Asked by: Cerberus
All styles are made using a 360 degree Goodyear welt construction, however, they are split into different categories depending on their features. The Bench welt features our original hot cork injected footbed with stability and comfort that shapes to your foot. You can learn more about the different welts here: https://www.allenedmonds.com/our-welts.html We also have a series of videos about the welts on our Youtube page showing the process of each version: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtXNs86hKRpnnIkgKKUzZZWReE97j8U3c Thank you for your question!

Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is LGA?

    Asked by: dfwkid
LGA is the airport code for LaGuardia Airport in New York. The names of the shoes in this lightweight "traveler" series are all airport themed - LAX being the code for Los Angeles and SFO for San Francisco.

I previously purchased the LGA's because of their removable heel cup which, when removed, fit perfectly with my custom orthotics. Is there another

style of wingtip dress shoe that you could suggest which would fit similarly to the LGA's? I am interested in something with a leather sole, as opposed to a rubber sole. I did not see any other welts with removable heel cups, but want something that will accommodate my orthotics and still fit similarly to the LGA's. Thanks in advance.

Hello, Thank you for your inquiry! You'll be pleased to know that we still offer the LGA Wingtip oxfords. If you would still like to purchase shoes with a removable insole, we would recommend the MSP Split or the LAX Derby shoe. If you copy the link below it will direct you all of the styles we offer with a removable insole. https://www.allenedmonds.com/search?q=Removable%20Insole%20Shoes&start=1&sz=53 We hope this helps!
