Is there anything more all-American than the penny loafer? How about one made right here in the U.S.A.? We didn't think so. That's why we named this new model the Patriot. A faithful interpretation of this timeless design, the Patriot honors our legacy of craftsmanship and classic American style like no other shoe on the market. Of course, there is always a little room for improvement, which is why we designed a brand new last - the 606 - especially for these shoes. Roomier in the forefoot but also featuring our trademark narrow heel (perfect for those who forgo socks), this last has helped us create our best fitting penny loafer ever. As if that's not enough, the Patriot is also featured in Genuine Horween® Shell Cordovan leather with an exclusive black, burgundy, and brown finish burnished to rich perfection. The consummate country club shoe, the Patriot is sure to become our next American classic.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Patriot Penny Loafer is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 124.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I'm very disappointed in the overall fit and finish of this pair of Patriots. The finish of the brown shell is far from uniform. Some areas have the typical smooth, shiny finish that is expected with cordovan. However, areas around the toe box of the right shoe are dull and have a grainy texture. The lining of the left shoe is almost completely rolled over on itself along nearly the entire length of the quarter. Additionally, the strap of the right shoe has an edge sticking out beyond the stitching that wasn't trimmed or finished. Nearly $700 for THAT? I've read stories of declining quality control with AE, but I've yet to really experience it with previous purchases (save for a few small issues). This pair definitely was not first quality, and is questionable as a factory second. I ordered these with custom soles, so I'll have the local cobbler fix the lining and the unfinished edge of the strap. I guess I'll just live with the rest of the issues. Combined with the most recent price increases, I'm not sure their shoes are worth the cost now. I may still purchase shoes on clearance, but I'm never buying 'first' quality shoes from AE again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this choice I chose this shoe to replace a pair of Alden cordovan leather penny loafers that I have had for more than 25 years. I had the Aldens resoled multiple times and even had them "renovated" by Alden once. I was reluctant to replace them as I liked them so much, but they literally were worn out. I liked the look of the Patriots and wore them on the carpet at home for several weeks to ensure the fit was right. I've worn them a couple of weeks now and they are terrific -- superior to the Aldens in every way. Expensive, but seem worth the cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am exceptional pleased with the Cordovan Patriot loafers. The quality is superb and after one wearing they were very comfortable. I have several pairs of AE Park Avenue's as well as an AE Strand, and I wear 9 1/2 D in all of those and they are very comfortable. I had a hunch from reading reviews that I should order a 9 1/2 E for the Patriot loafers and the result was a great fit. I now have 2 pairs of Cordovan Patriot loafers, one in black and one in burgundy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handcrafted in the USA Great looking shoes and feel great. I plan on buying black and burgundy in the same shoe style in the coming months.

Are there any plans to introduce a shell Lake Forest? The Lake Forest is sort of a modernized update to the Patriot; sleeker looking and more polished. Plus I feel as though the Lake Forest, whose fit is a lot "easier" and more forgiving, would generate a much larger audience. I understand that the Patriot was sort of a "classic" and a favorite of Paul, but sometimes it is better to change and adapt. The Randolph I feel works for a lot of people, not for others. It runs wider than most shoes but also very flat. The Patriot for a much smaller group; narrow in the heel but also very low vamp. I feel like the Lake Forest would encompass virtually everyone with the marriage of a narrow heel, raised vamp and sufficiently roomy toebox.

Is the Patriot roomy enough for someone with a bunion?

I usually wear size 9.5 EEE in AE shoes, the extra width required in part by a bunion just below my big toe on my R foot. I'm wondering if the Patriot is roomy enough in the toe box/forefoot to comfortably accommodate my condition. Some of the reviews suggest the fit might be too restrictive. Thanks!
Asked by: Bulldog
I wear a 9.5 D and it is like this shoe was custom made for me. I do think that the fit is narrow in the ankle, as it should be, for me at any rate. I have a pair in suede and the fit was so perfect for me that I bought a pair in shell cordovan. I have never been able to wear loafer comfortably until I tried these. Most loafers are not snug enough in the ankle and flop off of my feet. I hope this helps you.

Polish color for Brown

This is the first pair of AE I will be polishing myself and want to get a good color match. The shoe description is "brown burnished calf" and the polish colors I think might match are "Dark Brown", "Bourbon", or "Walnut". Which is the best fit?
Asked by: NWiggers
Thank you for your inquiry. We recommend using the Dark Brown Premium Shoe Polish for your Patriot Penny Loafers in Brown Burnished Calf. Prior to polishing, we do recommend using our Conditioner Cleaner to prepare the leather for polishing. Apply it with a soft cotton cloth in small amounts at a time and in circular motions, then apply the polish and buff or brush to a desired shine. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

What is the difference between the Patriot Cordovan Loafer & the Partiot Penny Loafer?

Asked by: Anonymous
It is the leather. Shell Cordovan Leather is the highest quality leather one can buy. Horween make this leather in Chicago from horse hides and it is the only manufacturer of this leather. It takes one horse to make a pair of shoes. The name derives from the city of Cordoba, Spain where this leather originated.

Please compare the fit of the Patriot with fit of the Presidio and the Cole.

Asked by: Mike4717
The Patriot is constructed on the 606 last which has a broad, flat toe providing a roomier forepart. The instep transition and cone rise is farther back than a typical Allen Edmonds last. The Presidio was constructed on the 222 last which has an elongated toe with a slightly higher instep and a more narrow fit in the forefoot creating a sleek silhouette and rounded European look. The Cole was constructed on the discontinued 456 last which had a very wide rounded toe. By selecting shoes manufactured on the last that most resembles the contours of your feet, you will achieve a superior fit, only enhancing the comfort of your shoes.

Are the insoles removable?

Are the insoles in this shoe removable or is that only in the orthotic range?
Asked by: Alvin
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds. The Patriot style was not designed with an orthotic fit in mind and so it does not feature a removable insole. The styles that feature removable insoles are those that are part of the Orthotic Collection and Jack Nicklaus Collection; as well as the Voyager style. Keep in mind, however, that if the shoe is fit large enough, these inserts can be used in almost any of our shoes. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions. How does this shoe fit compared to the old suede Firenze with the bit?

Asked by: Anonymous
Thank you for your interest in Allen Edmonds. The Firenze style is a member of our Italian Collection, which has been known to have a slightly more snug fit. The Patriot style is manufactured on our 6-Last (606) which has a broad flat toe that provides a roomier forepart, however the cone rises back farther back than a typical AE last and may not be the best fit for a higher instep. By selecting shoes manufactured on the last that most resembles the contours of one’s feet, customers will achieve a superior fit, only enhancing the comfort of the shoes. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions. Allen Edmonds Customer Service

Would you recommend these shoes to someone with a very wide foot and a high instep?

8 EEE is my normal AE size. Some styles still are too tight over the arch to be comfortable. Second question - Do you ever have factory seconds in the cordovan shoes?
Asked by: Spence
I suspect that this would not work for you. I like the fit because it is tighter over the arch than some loafers.
