  • Care

We believe a great pair of shoes or boots is always a solid long-term investment. To keep your favorite footwear in top form for years or even decades to comes, use our 4 Step Shoe Care Process and these essential products.

    1. Clean

Start by applying Saddle Soap with a Cotton Flannel Polishing Cloth to remove stains and dirt from the uppers and bring up the leather's natural oils.

    2. Polish

Next, use a Horsehair Dauber to treat your footwear with Cream Polish which renews the color and luster of leather. Any time you want to achieve a truly glossy, high shine, you should instead apply Carnauba Wax Polish.

    3. Dress

Restore the color and surface of the leather on the heels and soles using Heel Dressing.

    4. Protect

Leather Lotion keeps uppers soft, supple and hydrated while a Horsehair Shine Brush is perfect for buffing your shoes to the desired shine. As a last step, spray on Water Protector to guard against harmful moisture and spills and use a Leather Dopp Kit to keep all your care products organized.

Hopkinson Cap-Toe Oxford is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 120.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shoe This is by far the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever purchased. Very sad to hear that AE has stopped producing them. I would gladly purchase another pair and a few others from the independence collection. These run a bit wide, which fits my fat 3E foot perfectly. The leather is of superior quality and there is vertically no “break in” period. The price is a bit higher when compared with PA, but with a discount this is by far a better choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very comfortable dress shoe Excellent quality and very comfortable dress show. Liked the first pair, in black, so much I ordered a pair in walnut.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hopkinson—Best shoes ever These are the most comfortable shoes that I have ever owned. I have quite wide feet (EEE) and it is difficult getting a dress shoe that fits well. This is my fifth pair of AE dress shoes (e.g., I already have Park Avenue and Fifth Avenue), and hands down the Hopkinson Cap-Toe Oxford are the best.

    LACES

Hopkinson is a six hole shoe. However in front of the very first hole, is a tiny "thread". Is this supposed to remain on the shoe?
    Asked by: Anonymous
I believe this "thread" is a stitch that from on side to the other. All of my pairs of AE Oxford's have it (Strand, 5th Ave, Bartlett, and Hopkinson).

    Treatment

How should I treat these shoes before wearing them? Waterproofer? Leather lotion? Anything in particular? Also, what type of leather are these made from? Thank you.
    Asked by: Kris
AE only mentions European leather (or some such) if I remember correctly. It does appear to be a softer leather than my 5th Ave and Strands. As far as products to use, I personally use Saphir. Saphir is more expensive than others, but I haven't ever regretted using their products. I use a neutral color polish more than any other, regardless of shoe color. I like a mirror shine on the toe/rear cap and that are the only places that get a paste wax. Everywhere else gets a cream polish.

Fit wise,a re the Hopkinson shoes the same as the park avenues just wider?

I have a pair of park avenues, and the 11 EEE fits ok, but are just a little narrow. I recently tried the Hopkinson, because it seemed they were wider fitting. The width was better, but it seemed there was less room in between the bottom and top of the inside of the shoe. This caused my toes to be forced up into the top of the shoe. Part of the problem is that I have to wear orthotic inserts which obviously takes up room. I did not have this problem with the park avenues. Do you think I will have the same problem if I try another pair of the Hopkinson? If this effects anything the pair I had were also a little too long, but my main question is about the fit of the front of the shoe.
    Asked by: Gregory
They are made on different lasts. The Park Avenues last is better for people with higher arches. It sounds like you have higher than normal arches like I do. I recently returned a pair of Hopkinson's after learning about the last difference from customer service.

What size shoe tree for a 10.5B Hopkinson?

    Asked by: achilles
I use the Woodlore Large Combination Style (split toe) for all of my AE Oxfords (10.5E and 11D). They fit snug but you don't have to force them in. If you are like me, you might try different brands and styles of shoe trees and some might not fit the same. I'd find one style and size of shoe tree and stick with it.

How should I treat this shoe before I begin wearing it (i.e., waterproofing, etc.)?

    Asked by: Kris
Condition, polish and if desired, wax the heel and toe areas. You have no idea how long any shoe has been sitting in a box and they should be conditioned and cream polished to restore and nourish the leather. These, like most shoes, do not come pre-polished/shined.

does this hopkinson style have some revision recently?

I found my independence collection shoes bought 5 years ago have a metal clip on the under side but the Jefferson 2.0 and this Hopkinson both do not have that metal clip. I recently purchased a pair of this Hopkinson and a pair of Jefferson 2.0 and they are consistent with the picture here (i.e. no metal clip on the under side). Since Jefferson 2.0 is called 2.0 so I suppose it has some revision recently. I'm wondering whether this Hopkinson also has some revision recently (in the past 2 to 3 years) ? thank you
    Asked by: charlesNYC
Thank you for your question. The sole of the Independence Collection shoes, was changed to not include the metal plate on the bottom any longer.

If you wear a size C width, which size is correct with this shoe? I wear a 10 1/2 C.

    Asked by: Anonymous
I have noticed that you can generally go one width size smaller on the Independence Collection. Trying them on is the best way to answer this though!
