Alpine Cap-Toe Boot with Vibram Arctic Grip Rubber Sole is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfy, Stylish, No-Slip Dress Boots These are my first Allen Edmonds boots; and my third boots with Vibram Arctic Grip. Don't know if Vibram improved the technology since the first Arctic Grip Merrells I bought, but these Allen Edmonds Alpine Cap-Toe boots are significantly grippier and more stable on slippery ice than my two previous Arctic Grip boots. They're perfect for the kind of tricky black ice that you see at the very last moment; or on ice resulting from snow which thawed during the day, refroze overnight and is thawing again come morning producing a slick watery top on a crust of perfectly polished ice under the thawing water. They also held up really well on really hard-packed slick snow (the kind that different vehicles rolled on and packed and polished into a perfectly smooth slippery white substance). Although these boots won't replace spikes, they offer just enough traction to make it home without breaking a foot if you didn't bring crampons or spikes with you ; the Arctic Grip sandpaper-like substance dragging and scraping along the icy patches. The leather is so smooth and comfortable. Not break-in required. These things are like slippers. If I wasn't worried about ruining my carpetless floor with the Arctic Grip, I'd be tempted to wear these all the time. I tried them with khakis and with a suit for work; they work well with both outfits. Considering the style and colour, I suspect they'd fit really well with denim as well. I bought factory 2nds. The issues with mine were some imperfect stitching on one boot and a bit of an uneven cut of the leather on the cap toe. Nothing major. Sizing-wise, I usually wear 10.5D in all sneaker brands and 10D in most boots (Timberland, Wolverine, Thursday Boots, Dr. Martens). The Allen Edmonds 10D is a perfect fit. Snug but not tight; using either medium or thin merino wool socks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely comfortable boots From the instant I put them on, I just wanted to walk. I am looking forward to see how they perform in winter conditions but I suspect they will do well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Heel blocks are coming apart after just two months I bought these boots because I wanted a more casual boot that I could use with my office attire for the New England winter. These are very comfortable. The leather upper, although not of the same quality as the upper in a pair of Daltons, is very resistant to salt stains and water. Also, the Vibram soles have proven to work great in icy conditions. However, I cannot give these boots a good review because after only two months of use, the heel blocks are coming apart. It started with the Vibram rubber, so I didn't think it was a big deal and I was going to fix it with some shoe glue. Unfortunately, now the stacked leather (or whatever they used) that makes up the heels are coming apart too. I will have to get these to a cobbler now, before the issue gets worse, just when the winter is getting started and I need them the most.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I Wanted This Boot - But Had to Return After two different pair of these boots had quality problems, I finally just returned them for a refund. The cap toe sewing on both pair was crooked and looked terrible. I would've tried for a third pair, but I wanted them for an upcoming trip, and as AE no longer offers 2-day shipping, they wouldn't be here in time.

Do you recommend normal cedar shoe trees or boot trees?

    Asked by: 5thAlpine
You can use either type of shoe trees inside of your boots. Honestly, it depends on your preference. -AE Consumer Care Dept.

    Size EEE

I'm wondering why only widths D and EEE? More specifically, for my case, if a person normally wears an E with a cotton sock, is a EEE needed for a thick wool winter sock to match that winter sole? If each width increment is 3/16" in total girth, it seems jumping from E to EEE in anticipation of wearing a thick sock would be a mistake. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

We would be happy to forward your feedback on our sizing options to the appropriate parties. We would recommend going with the size you normally wearing and judging the fit from there. If this is not an option, you should visit your nearest store to try a pair.

    outsole?

Wondering if the outsole is soft/squishy/lightweight like that used on the Ace, Tupelo and Long Branch or is it more like the older mini-lug (closer to the It's Hide or what is used on the Surreys & Rainier, harder and more rigid). Thanks!
    Asked by: Anonymous
Hello, Thank you for your inquiry! The outsole on the Alpine Cap-Toe boot does not have a lightweight sole. However, the sole provides All-season comfort and stability. -AE Consumer Care Dept.
