  • Care

We believe a great pair of shoes or boots is always a solid long-term investment. To keep your favorite footwear in top form for years or even decades to comes, use our 4 Step Shoe Care Process and these essential products.

    1. Clean

Start by applying Saddle Soap with a Cotton Flannel Polishing Cloth to remove stains and dirt from the uppers and bring up the leather's natural oils.

    2. Polish

Next, use a Horsehair Dauber to treat your footwear with Cream Polish which renews the color and luster of leather. Any time you want to achieve a truly glossy, high shine, you should instead apply Carnauba Wax Polish.

    3. Dress

Restore the color and surface of the leather on the heels and soles using Heel Dressing.

    4. Protect

Leather Lotion keeps uppers soft, supple and hydrated while a Horsehair Shine Brush is perfect for buffing your shoes to the desired shine. As a last step, spray on Water Protector to guard against harmful moisture and spills and use a Leather Dopp Kit to keep all your care products organized.

    Relaxed Fit

The relaxed fit has added space in the toe box. This extra room allows for thicker socks and foot expansion that occurs at the end of the day or during a long flight.

Higgins Mill Boot with Chromexcel Leather is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 299.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great boot! Better than expected. I received my Higgins Mill boots yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. After reading other reviews, I was skeptical, but these are awesome boots. I ordered my normal AE size 9.5 D, and they slid on like a glove. The quality is what I’ve come to expect from AE (this is my 9th pair of AE shoes), and like every pair they are comfortable right out of the box. And, the factory has added a tongue keeper, which solves the most frequent issue in the other reviews. Thanks for such a great American made product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even better in person! Beautiful suede color and the lug sole is a nice durable compliment. Unfortunately brands like AE are dying US brands, because of the throw away culture. I highly recommend this boot and other AE shoes. I'm an American living in Europe and AE even has the credibility over here too. Great customer service too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Boots This is my second pair of Higgins Mills boots. The boots I received were well constructed with no issues. The leather on the boots is stiff compared to CXL, but after conditioning them and wearing them 5-6 times, they have begun to get better. It is important to note that this boot is made of vegetable tanned leather and not chrome/oil tanned leather. This means they will be stiffer than some other leathers. The boots did squeak when I first got them. Conditioning them solved that issue. The coating that AE outs on them looks nice, and it will wear away so the boots will develop patina or a worn look. If you want a completely uniform color to the leather on your boots, look for a different Higgins Mill. Some have commented that these boots are not durable. The Higgins Mill is not intended to be a work boot. It is a casual/semi-dress boot that holds up very well to office and weekend wear including outdoors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best boots ever! These boots are my new favorite. I wear an 11.5 with a B width in Allen Edmonds shoes. I was worried that the boots would fit differently. They fit perfectly, the leather is soft and supple but still sturdy, and I would wear them every day if I could get away with it!

I usually wear sneakers of size 6.5. What size would be appropriate for me for these boots? Also what is 'E' width size?

    Asked by: Shreyas
I usually wear a 11.5D in New Balance and Nike sneakers. I recomend going a 1/2 size down just like most boots and dress shoes. E, is wide. EE more wide and EEE most wide. I think I answered your question. If not, I recommend contacting AE directly. They have fantastic customer service support.

Do you plan on releasing more colors/leather options of the Higgins Mill with Lug soles? I recently got a black pair, but I’m not keen on the burgundy. I’d like to request you make Brown Saddle Leather available. Let me know if you have any intentions of following through and when they might be available? (I understand I can customize, but I’d rather not pay additional 40$ if you might release different colors and leathers with the lug sole soon). Thank you Christian
    Asked by: Christian
We are happy to learn of your interest in the Higgins Mill lug sole. At this time, we do not have any plans of offering this style in more colors. Please know that we will forward your feedback to the appropriate teams for future consideration.

Is there a way to make the chemical odor dissipate?

I love everything about these boots except for the strong shoe store odor they emit. I'm considered about what to do if I keep them and the smell persists.
    Asked by: Jonathan
Chromexcel leather may have a slight odor from all the oils, waxes, and greases that are "hot-stuffed" into the leather. The odor will dissipate overtime with normal aeration and wear, but will likely never get completely eliminated because of the way the leather is tanned. If you have other questions, feel free to contact us again.

I'm reading contradictory info on how to care for chromexcel--is it ok to use normal shoe creams and polishes or just AE "Leather Lotion"?

    Asked by: Jonathan
We recommend our Cream Polish in Neutral for regular care because that is formulated for Chromexcel leather. You can use Leather Lotion as a gentle "cleaner" by applying a small amount to a cloth to remove surface dust as needed. Saddle Soap can also be used, but only if absolutely necessary and sparingly, for example if you happen to get a lot of dirt or mud on the leather. If you have other questions, feel free to contact us again.

    Tongue Slip???

Hello, I'm a huge fan of AE, but I've read a lot of reviews about the Higgins Mills tongue slipping. I noticed via he photos for the Higgins Mills, that depending on the colors, the tongue includes a lace loop to mitigate the tongue slippage. What are your thoughts, or do all colors now come with the lace loop?
    Asked by: DD
All of our shoes with the lace loop.
