  • Care

We believe a great pair of shoes or boots is always a solid long-term investment. To keep your favorite footwear in top form for years or even decades to comes, use our 4 Step Shoe Care Process and these essential products.

    1. Clean

Start by applying Saddle Soap with a Cotton Flannel Polishing Cloth to remove stains and dirt from the uppers and bring up the leather's natural oils.

    2. Polish

Next, use a Horsehair Dauber to treat your footwear with Cream Polish which renews the color and luster of leather. Any time you want to achieve a truly glossy, high shine, you should instead apply Carnauba Wax Polish.

    3. Dress

Restore the color and surface of the leather on the heels and soles using Heel Dressing.

    4. Protect

Leather Lotion keeps uppers soft, supple and hydrated while a Horsehair Shine Brush is perfect for buffing your shoes to the desired shine. As a last step, spray on Water Protector to guard against harmful moisture and spills and use a Leather Dopp Kit to keep all your care products organized.

    Relaxed Fit

The relaxed fit has added space in the toe box. This extra room allows for thicker socks and foot expansion that occurs at the end of the day or during a long flight.

    Ask & Answer
Higgins Mill Weatherproof Boot with Dainite Rubber Sole is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 305.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great boot at a great price I have just gotten into good quality boots with the purchase of 2 Red Wings (Iron ranger, Blacksmith). 2 Wolverine 1000 mile boots, and a Truman. I had seen a review of this boot on Stridewise. So when Allen Edmonds had seconds on sale, I decided to buy one. I am impressed. Overall, it is a great boot. If you like either Iron Rangers or Blacksmiths or the Wolverine 1000 mile boot, then you will like this boot. Overall construction is very good. Break-in period was very short. After one day of wearing them, they were comfortable. I am very pleased with these boots. There is one slight negative about the purchase. Allen Edmonds has not done as good a job on providing guidance regarding boot fit as either Wolverine or Red Wing. Both of these companies tell you whether the boot runs large and by how much (e.g., Red Wing tells you go down either a 1/2 to 1 full size). There is nothing similar for Allen Edmonds. I wish that there was. I bought the boot in size 13 - in hindsight, I would have gotten away with a 12. Finally, would I recommend these boats? Yes, without a doubt. Get them, especially when they are on sale or when the seconds go on sale. The price and quality then cannot be beat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE EM! I love the Higgins Mill boots. I have 2 pair. They are comfortable and look great! I've actually gotten compliments for them. The only issue, and it's a small one, is I wish they had some sort of shank. My Becketts do and that just makes them more stable and arch friendly. These are great boots for every day wear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best boots ever I absolutely love these boots and they have quickly become my most favorite boots I've ever owned. As soon as I put them on my feet for the first time I was like, "where have these been all my life" The quality is excellent and I was actually surprised at how soft and comfortable the leather was. These are not going to be the boots that you wear at a construction site, but they most definitely are the boots you can wear every day into the office, on a date night, walking around the city, or just hanging out with something comfortable on your feet. They are pricy and I probably would not have bought them if it weren't for a great sale, but now that I've worn them, my willingness to pay for these boots just went up.

From a comfort standpoint do you recommend the dainite rubber sole or extra lite lug sole?

    Asked by: Mickey
Thank you for your inquiry! This would definitely depend on personal preference. However, if you prefer a thicker sole we would recommend the lug sole option. We hope this information helps!

I usually wear sneakers of size 6.5. What size would be appropriate for me for these boots? Also what is 'E' width size?

    Asked by: Shreyas
I usually wear a 11.5D in New Balance and Nike sneakers. I recomend going a 1/2 size down just like most boots and dress shoes. E, is wide. EE more wide and EEE most wide. I think I answered your question. If not, I recommend contacting AE directly. They have fantastic customer service support.

Do you plan on releasing more colors/leather options of the Higgins Mill with Lug soles? I recently got a black pair, but I’m not keen on the burgundy. I’d like to request you make Brown Saddle Leather available. Let me know if you have any intentions of following through and when they might be available? (I understand I can customize, but I’d rather not pay additional 40$ if you might release different colors and leathers with the lug sole soon). Thank you Christian
    Asked by: Christian
We are happy to learn of your interest in the Higgins Mill lug sole. At this time, we do not have any plans of offering this style in more colors. Please know that we will forward your feedback to the appropriate teams for future consideration.

Is there a way to make the chemical odor dissipate?

I love everything about these boots except for the strong shoe store odor they emit. I'm considered about what to do if I keep them and the smell persists.
    Asked by: Jonathan
Chromexcel leather may have a slight odor from all the oils, waxes, and greases that are "hot-stuffed" into the leather. The odor will dissipate overtime with normal aeration and wear, but will likely never get completely eliminated because of the way the leather is tanned. If you have other questions, feel free to contact us again.

I'm reading contradictory info on how to care for chromexcel--is it ok to use normal shoe creams and polishes or just AE "Leather Lotion"?

    Asked by: Jonathan
We recommend our Cream Polish in Neutral for regular care because that is formulated for Chromexcel leather. You can use Leather Lotion as a gentle "cleaner" by applying a small amount to a cloth to remove surface dust as needed. Saddle Soap can also be used, but only if absolutely necessary and sparingly, for example if you happen to get a lot of dirt or mud on the leather. If you have other questions, feel free to contact us again.

    Tongue Slip???

Hello, I'm a huge fan of AE, but I've read a lot of reviews about the Higgins Mills tongue slipping. I noticed via he photos for the Higgins Mills, that depending on the colors, the tongue includes a lace loop to mitigate the tongue slippage. What are your thoughts, or do all colors now come with the lace loop?
    Asked by: DD
All of our shoes with the lace loop.
