Surrey Chelsea Boot is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from very comfortable but poor unstable dye inside It was my first Allen Edmonds boot, and when I tried it in a store I was greatly impressed by their comfort and exterior. It was a pleasure to buy these boots. I'm wearing it for two months and really enjoying by every step - so warm and comfortable. But the dye inside makes my socks colored rich in brown every time I wear it. Generally, I'm ready to sacrifice socks again and again for pleasure to wear these boots - but I never experienced so poor quality of inside lining before and could never imagine that high-end brand could make it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Somewhat of a mixed bag A while back AE produced a casual chelsea called the Ashbury that I missed out on. Needless to say, when they introduced "Surrey 1.0" about a year of so ago, I was excited. Unfortunately that product was somewhat of a mixed bag. With the original Surrey, I think in going for the "pre-distressed" look they kind of went a little too far and were a little too inconsistent in some cases. The Surrey featured two suede variants - one tan, one dark brown. But what really could vary was the burnishing on the toe; this could range from almost negligible to something that looked almost like the shoes had been burned by a small fire. The boot was pretty rock solid otherwise: 1) It featured the traditional mini-lug outsole, which I strongly prefer over the gumlite used on some other styles such as the Sutter Mill; and 2) The wool lining helped reduce the volume of the otherwise somewhat "large" 1757 last. The Surrey definitely fit me better than the Higgins Mill in the same size. Very very similar shape and length, but just less roomy and less volume. What prevented me from picking up the original Surrey? Well, kind of typical of the DR-produced collections, the construction was just overall...sloppy, or not as good as the USA-made collections. Comparing the Surrey to a suede Caen was like comparing coal to a diamond. The suede on the Surrey is rough, the wool lining felt "cheap", and the stitching was overall not great. With both products priced exactly the same, the Caen was a no brainer (as was my Normandy previously); the Surrey just seemed to expensive for what it was. So now the new Surrey arrives. And again I feel like it's somewhat of a mixed bag. AE definitely addressed the inconsistency in the burnishing; that's gone entirely. But in doing so, I feel like some of the "artisinal feel" or "one-off" unique type of aspect was lost in the process. The new Surrey in the black and tan just look extremely generic; I would never know these were made by AE unless I was told specifically. Also, the black and tan leathers just felt like thin, cheap, flimsy vulcanized rubber. And while the mini-lug was back (luckily), so was the sloppy DR construction. Finally (this may be either a positive or negative for people), the woolen lining it completely gone. While the original Surrey fit me like a glove, the new chelsea Surrey was so voluminious I literally needed the laces present only on the chukka; the chelsea was no longer an option for me (just plain too large). The "brown" is kind of the most interesting of the bunch. It uses some kind of suede (or more likely nubuck) that gives it a more unique look than the rubbery leather of the black and tan. Up close in person I guess it can be called "brown" but it looks more like a grayish/green due to the dull nature of the nubuck. If you are looking for a bad weather option, like the mini-lug outsole and are happy with the larger fit of the 1757 (think very similar to the Higgins Mill), I guess this would be my recommendation if it was on sale. But I'd pass on those others.
