    LEATHER REPORT

    Vegetable-Tanned Calfskin

This ancient method for treating leather uses natural materials derived from tree bark and other plant matter in place of the harmful metals used in modern dye processes. The result is beautifully soft shades of leather like this bone color used for our Force 10 Boat Shoe that will develop into a light brown over time through wear and exposure to sunlight.

A Hue That Changes with You

Starting as a creamy, off-white, your footwear will take on a color and burnish that are individual to you as you wear it and treat it with our shoe care products.

Chicago’s famed Horween tannery has been producing some of the world’s best leathers since 1905. It’s committed to keeping traditional techniques alive through processes that combine old-world craft with the latest innovations.

This is the cross-lace style? That is one where we do not tie a bow or even tie anything. Correct?

    Asked by: Al Cazar
That is correct, The Force 10 Slip-on Boat shoe does not have to be tied. Thank you for asking and for shopping at Allen Edmonds!

    weatherproof?

Getting a little confused with all of the terminology introduced on the website - weatherproof, waterproof, etc. In terms of water resistance I've always kind of considered CXL to be pretty good. Wondering what the difference would be between the CXL vs. the original nubuck material used on the older Force 10s vs. something like the Weatherproof welts. Is CXL still considered the safest choice for wet weather?
    Asked by: Anonymous
Waterproof means no water in or out; a water spill may sit on the surface and it will not penetrate the leather. Weatherproof means that the leather is resistant but not impervious to water; for example, it can handle light rain, but not standing on puddles. The classic Chromexcel leather has water resistant properties, but the leather used on the Force 10 is a waterproof version of Chromexcel. How do I adjust the lace to tighten this shoe? There is extra lace provided on only 1 side thereby providing no apparent way to tie the shoe.

    Asked by: DeeBee
The Force 10 has laces that can be adjusted. One end starts on one bottom eyelet, weaves around the heel and comes out the side through the opposite bottom eyelet. To tighten the heel, face the shoe towards you and pull on the first section of laces at each side of the shoe. You will see the back of the heel tighten up. Then, pull the excess lace out of the bottom eyelets. You can cut the extra lace if you feel they are too long after tying the shoe on your foot. If you need further assistance with the laces, please visit an Allen Edmonds retail store or call us at 877-817-7615.

Go up or down in width?

I normally order a 14E in either a 65 or (rarely) a 201 last. This gives me a good fit with light weight socks, snug but supportive. These shoes jump from D width to EEE, Which width would be better, or is this just not going to be a good fit? I would tend to wear socks. I do not live near a retail outlet ever since you closed the Freeport, Maine shop. Any chance of that coming back?
    Asked by: EDWARD
Unfortunately, we're unable to recommend a size via this channel and guarantee a proper fit. However, you can expect a difference of 1/6" in length between half sizes, a difference of 3/16" in volume between the D and E, and a difference of 3/8" in volume between the E and EEE. Feel free to order online and try them at home, you can return them under our Return Policy terms which you can find here: https://www.allenedmonds.com/customer-service/shipping-returns.html While there are currently no plans to open a store in Maine, please know Allen Edmonds is always looking to expand our locations. Thank you being an Allen Edmonds customer!

Can I re-lace these w/ a replacement lace so they can be tied like a regular shoe + not be a slip-on? I need a tighter fit due to a very narrow foot.

    Asked by: DeeBee
The laces on the Force 10 style are functional and can be adjusted. If you prefer a different type of lace, you are welcome to change them. You will need to source your own laces and we recommend that they are at least 45" in length. Keep in mind, it is difficult to replace these laces around the collar without the proper tools. Feel free to reach out to our Recrafting team for assistance and cost information.

Slip on? Or need to tie up laced??

    Asked by: FF
The laces are functional if you need to adjust them, however most customers use this style as a slip-on without having to untie the laces. If you have other questions, feel free to contact us again.
