Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Cavanaugh Penny Loafer is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 158.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wanted to love these I've never worn loafers before so when I put them on I thought they were supposed to be tight to fit, but these are just painful. I'm a 9D, it's what I wear but these are like torture to my feet and I doubt I can wear them anymore, they feel a full size smaller, like a size 8. Pretty bummed, $300 shoes I only wore once.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great style, poor quality control These are great looking penny loafers in a timeless style, and the burnished brown leather is very beautiful and feels high quality. They are also very comfortable. However, I have had serious issues with quality control. My left loafer has been plagued with an irritating "squeak" ever since I purchased the shoes about a year and a half or so ago, and the squeaking has not improved with wear. I've worn them mainly inside my office building and out to lunch on days when I'm not in a suit (I keep them in my office), yet the sole on the left loafer has inexplicably delaminated at the front of the shoe beneath the toe. Meanwhile, the sole on the right loafer has minimal wear. I've never had a problem with squeaking or sole delamination with any other shoe I've owned in the $200-350 price bracket (I own around six pairs from three different makers). As a result I cannot recommend these loafers, despite their very nice look and comfort.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Shoe This shoe exceeds everything you would expect in a Penny Loafer. Not sure who is leaving these negative reviews , but they seem like a joke. I have 3 pairs of these - having bought my first pair 3+ years ago - and all are in great condition. Great shoe for business casual or leisure occasions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice trendy loafer Very nice loafer and perfect for the summer, fits very well a wide foot. The fit is similiar to that of the Dalton boot in terms of shape. One thing to note is that its not Goodyear welted and probably corrected grain, but for the price its pretty hard to beat. Will definitely be buying more in different colors.

Tell me more about the foam insoles in the Cavanaugh loafers please.

My son wears either a 11.5 B or 12 B. Unfortunately there are no Allen Edmonds stores near him. Regarding the foam insoles, are they constructed from memory foam or some other type of foam? We find memory foam holds up well for constant daily use; I'm concerned standard types of foam insoles will flatten out over time and provide little cushion. He will wear these all over campus. Thank you in advance.
Asked by: Chj
This shoe has a simple foam insole. It is not memory foam. It is a partial insole that is relatively thin. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

I have over pronation. Does the Cavanaugh have a replaceable insole to provide more arch support?

Asked by: Carl202
The Cavanaugh does not feature removable insoles. Here's the link to the styles we offer that accommodate custom orthotics: It is vitally important to visit an Allen Edmonds retail store or retail partner for a professional fitting to increase your chances of being fit correctly for each last and style. However, keep in mind that products purchased on may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused and accompanied by the packing slip.  Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoes in returnable condition.

Is this shoe recraftable? Thank you.

Asked by: Anonymous
These shoes are brand new. I have tried them on, but never actually worn them. If you mean, do I know whether AE will refurbish them for me when they wear out, I suspect "Yes", but I am not certain.

Does this shoe have the layer of cork between the insole and the outsole like most of your other dress shoes?

Asked by: KP
To my understanding, it does not. Only the welted construction have the cork layer. The Cavanaugh is a handsewn construction.
