Mercer Street Penny Loafer is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well worth the sale price I bought a pair of 1st quality Mercer St. loafers in mahogany, size 10eee ( I wear 3e-4e). SIZING: These run a bit tight at the ball of the foot, but the instep is ok. For comparison, I have a pair of Factory 2nd Daltons in 10eee that is perfect at the ball of the foot, but had to be stretched a bit for my high instep, a pair of factory 2nd LGA Wingtips that fit a bit loose in the heel but otherwise wear as comfortably as sneakers, and a pair of Cornwallis oxfords in 10.5 eee that fit perfectly, if a little too long for my preference. QUALITY CONTROL: I have no complaints. They arrived in basically perfect condition if ones does not expect bespoke attention to detail from a factory made shoe. There is a tiny divot in the welt that no one will ever see and a few threads that could have been trimmed off closer at the factory. MATERIALS: The combination sole is a nice touch, It looks like leather from the side, while providing much better grip on smooth floors. The leather used for the upper is not my favorite, but contrary to some other reviews, it doesn't look bad at all. It was obvious from the pictures on the website that this was a corrected grain leather, and it is a bit smoother and more uniform than I expected from the photos. When I received the shoes, I applied some Venetian Shoe Cream, because I didn't know how long the shoes had been sitting on the shelf. It appeared to absorb into the leather, but certainly not as well as it does into full grain calskin/cowhide, and the second coat left a bit of residue that I had to brush off before wearing them the next day. My guess is that the artificial sealers used to seal leather after the grain was sanded off may not be as impermeable as the coatings that became common on dress shoes in the 1990s ore the ones common on many women's shoes today. That said, I tried to polish these a bit and it didn't take, so I am a bit concerned about the longevity of the finish. I sent an email to AE customer service, asking about the proper care and expected longevity of this leather. VALUE: I paid about $160.00 for these, and, even with the outstanding questions about the uppers, they are still quite a bit nicer than any other similar loafers I've seen at that price point. I don't normally wear loafers, but needed a shoe to wear to airports and courthouses at which might have to remove my shoes at security checkpoints. These fit the bill well, and look pretty good with a navy or brown suit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leather finish feels and looks cheap BUYER BEWARE!!! Polish will NOT work on these shoes. These are NOT traditional full grain leather! Just ordered these in Mahogany sz 13. Ordered the Factory 2nds and thought I was getting a real bargain at this price point and was happy to finally get my first pair of Allen Edmonds. I started my usual pre-wear care of applying Sahpir Renovateur to condition the shoes and noticed it did not take! This appears to be a book-binder leather or there is some type of coating or acrylic finish on the leather that keeps the shoes from being conditioned. I'm very disappointed that they charge a $25 re-stocking fee for all F2 returns while not making it apparent the type of leather they are using. I had heard great things about AE quality, but could not be any more let down in a shoe that retails for $395

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shoe Purchased these for my son and he absolutely loved them. He said they fit well and were very comfortable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shoes are too big my feet swim in them. These are the worst pair of AEs I have ever purchased When I walk my heel actual comes out of the shoes. Poorly fitted and can't really wear. Beware of the fit since clearly they either mislabeled the size or they are making the shoe improperly. This is the first pair of AEs where is has occurred so my suspicion is that their manufacturing quality has gone down.

What is the difference between Black and Black Calfskin?

    Asked by: Anonymous
There is no difference, they are both black full-grain calfskin leathers. The reason they have different style numbers is because one of the leathers has become obsolete and we have sourced the leather from a different tannery. Thank you for your question!

    Similarity to the Cameron loafer

Hi. How close is the Mercer Street last to the old Cameron last? Are there any current loafers made on a last like the old Cameron? Thank you.

Thank you for your interest in the Mercer Street Penny loafer. The style is made of premium European calfskin leather, and it does have a soft and supple feel.

I have a client looking for a E width, I see this shoe only comes in EEE should I go with it or will it be too wide?

    Asked by: Kristine
You can expect a difference of approximately 3/8" in volume between an E and a EEE. In most cases, a size EEE is too wide for customers that wear an E width. Feel free to contact us again if you have additional questions!
