Overview

Why It's Great

Just like our Park Avenues, the Carlyle Hotel has a long history with American presidents. Though this new six-eyelet balmoral hasn't yet achieved the fame of its cap-toed forerunner, its name signifies the fact it has just that kind of potential.

How It's Made

Already being called an instant classic, the understated handsewn whipstitching coupled with the burnishing on the toe allow the style's great lines and impeccable calfskin to shine. The 108 last design, which features an elongated, tapered toe, gives this dress shoe just the right amount of attitude making it perfect for the modern executive that is considered a success but still feels like he has something to prove. Finished with a regular welt, single leather sole and regular heel, the Carlyle instills confidence when you walk into any office, oval or otherwise.

How to Wear It

Now this is a classic shoe. No muss, no fuss. The lighter colors can work with jeans, but the deep black with simple styling has business apparel written all over it.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Our new Dark Chili and Oxblood burnished leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue. Follow by using a soft cloth to apply our Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap which cleans all smooth leather shoes while restoring the leather's natural oils.

Reviews
Carlyle Plain-toe Oxford is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 185.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Terrible Creases in One Shoe The Carlyle shoes is really a beautiful shoe, and I love the oxblood finish on the plain toe. However, after one or two wears, the left shoes creased terribly. The right shoe has just about the proper creasing one would expect from a full-grain leather shoe with a plain toe, but the left shoe really sticks out like a broken thumb when they're worn together. I don't know if the quality of the leather is different for each shoe or if they were just poorly constructed. I am really disappointed because I have two other pairs of Allen Edmonds shoes and was looking forward to a quality plain-toe Oxford.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic shoe I'm normally a 14D, but after trying some AEs in-store, I decided to shave some length and order these in 13EEE with a superfeet green insole. A bit of a gamble, but with the addition of the insole, the fit couldn't be more perfect.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from damage is very obious, quality control problem I have attached a picture when I returned the product which shows the damage on inner right foot shoe edge. I ordered walnut color, but the shoes received do not look like walnut at all.

Ask & Answer

Brown or Dark Chili or Black

My husband had a pair of the Carlyle - Walnut. I wanted to get him another color. He wears a lot of grey (dark-light); tan/ khaki - casual Fridays; and navy. He really doesn't wear much black to the office. He's not a hedge fund manager - so the black shoe norm really doesn't apply. He is an upper- level engineer in an office environment. It's more business professional / but not suits. It is the blazer/ sport coat look. Questions: 1) What other color should I get him? Brown, Dark Chilli or Black? He has some Ecco (blacks) - with the apron toe. Not a fan. Johnson Murphy - burgundy Captoe oxfords.- No to these as well. We are ready to step it up a notch. 2) he's usually a 9.5 in Cole Haan Dress shoes- his feet are on the more narrow side. Would you reccommend a 9.5 in the Carlyle? 3) is this shoe too dressy for Blazer/trousers/ sportshirt - no tie? 4) can these be resoled? 5) my husband is flat footed- are there stability orthodics available?
Asked by: Lizl
Dark Chilli would probably be your best. This has a narrow last, I could not use it and had to return it even though I loved the look. Good shoe for blazer Yes you can re sole You should not need them but if you do want them you need to order a half size larger in my opinion.

Size question

I purchased the Carlyle as my first AE oxford, but not the last. I very much like how it is a top quality oxford that is made in the U.S. I would like size advice for the AE Park Avenue. I measure as a 10 eee, but I fit as a 9.5 eee in the Carlyle. I also recently purchased the Boulder loafer/moccasin in 10 e, which fit fine. What size would you recommend for the AE Park Avenue? Thank you!
Asked by: Anonymous
Thank you for our inquiry. Allen Edmonds shoes are constructed on a wide variety of lasts (foot molds) and each will feature unique fit characteristics. It is difficult to recommend a size through this channel and guarantee a proper fit because each style can fit differently based on the contours of your feet. The Park Avenue’s 65 last is the longest in length of all of our lasts; best for a long, narrow foot. The Carlyle’s 108 last has an elongated forepart with a tapered and flatter toe. Typically, we recommend trying the same size you usually wear and judge the fit based on how comfortable you feel in the shoes. It is vitally important to visit an Allen Edmonds retail store or retail partner for a professional fitting to increase your chances of being fit correctly for each last and style. However, keep in mind that products purchased on AllenEdmonds.com may be returned at any time, as long as the item is unused, accompanied by the packing slip, and not customized. Trying the shoes on a carpeted surface will help prevent scuffing on the sole and keep the shoes in returnable condition.

I measure at 13.5 and B width. What is your recommendation in the Carlyle?

Asked by: Luke34
Based on my experience, I would try a 13D. They have a little extra length and run a bit narrow, from what I understand.

Can I special order Carlyle's with patent leather finish?

I'm looking for a pair of patent leathers for black tie events. Can the carlyle's be special ordered in patent leather? Thanks
Asked by: Anonymous
Thanks for your inquiry. At this time, we do not offer patent leather styles or custom options. Typically we suggest applying our Carnauba wax to impart a higher shine on the surface for the leather for a more formal look. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

Do these go well with chinos?

I just ordered a walnut pair and was wondering if the carlyle style can be pulled off with chinos.
Asked by: Andy
I think so. The plain toe is what allows it, in my opinion.

Can this shoe acomodate the more formal flat evening laces?

The style of the Carlyle lends itself to evening/ black tie use while polished to a mirror finish. However, most tuxedo shoes use flat evening laces, usually one to one and half inches wide resulting in a beautiful bow tie knot. I would like to know of this shoe would take these wider laces.
Asked by: Karflo
Comes with flat laces but not sure it can accommodate much wider. Eyelets are tiny.

I'm looking to waterproof these shoes, do you have any products / could you recommend any way to do this?

Asked by: jwtm1988
Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, we do not recommend waterproofing our shoes, as some waterproofers can damage our finishes. We recommend using overshoes in wet conditions.

Oxblood turned white now what?

Wore my Carlyle oxbloods (non-burnished) to work the other day forgetting that there was mandatory CPR / First Aid training. We all spent a fair bit of time on our knees with "Resusci-Annie", treating for shock etc. Unfortunately, the tips of my shoes were in contact with the carpet which removed the oxblood color rendering the tips completely white. I have used the oxblood shoe polish to attempt to cover the white spots to no avail. Is there anything that can be done to save them?
