    Fit

    Relaxed Fit

The relaxed fit has added space in the toe box. This extra room allows for thicker socks and foot expansion that occurs at the end of the day or during a long flight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Back to the land down under! In general I'm not a big fan of re-releases and like to see new (and hopefully improved) products hit the market....but in the case of the Brisbane (now called Perth)...I'll make an exception :) Other than the Brisbane/Cheetah the only other sneaker platform with which I have experience is the Porter, so while I am a die-hard veteran of AE, I can only compare these two. I have not tried the Canal Court, Cooper or Howard and likely won't get to do so anytime in the near future. I'll try to keep this as short and sweet as possible, breaking this down into 1) Fit; 2) The Good; and 3) The Bad. I have at this point worn both my Cheetah and Brisbane a TON, and have also worn my two pairs of Porters a TON. The length of all 4 pairs are virtually identical. I would say this is about as TTS in length as you can get, and they run roughly 0.5 sizes shorter in length than a welted style like a Park Ave. While I still maintain that width is what I would call "standard," meaning not narrow but not wide, I will note that the Brisbane is significantly roomier and has more overall volume (basically all over) than the Porter, maybe even 50% more. The heelcup and toebox feel very similar between the two platforms, but the Brisbane just feels "bigger" overall. Now for the good. Unlike the Porter, which I found to be a barrel of trouble to break-in, the break-in on the Brisbane was far far far less painful overall. First day's wear led to some ankle blistering and rubbing (due to the excess volume and roomy heel I noted earlier) but literally after one day's full wear, they were basically broken in. This greatly contrasted against the Porter, which at least for me required full day after full day of wear, rubbed up toes, shredded heels, and even to this day something that still hasn't broken in fully. The Brisbane's Vibram cup sole is nothing short of fantastic in terms of both support and flexibility. For a sneaker you honestly couldn't ask for much more. In addition...the Brisbane breathes a LOT better than the Porter which always gets my feet hot and uncomfortably sweaty. And finally, after a couple wears the back edge of the bottom of the Porter's outsole (both pairs) started to wear and peel away, and the inside of the heelcup (sueded material) started to shred and flake and stick to my socks. This NEVER happened (or even came close to happening) on the Brisbane. And...what's not good. Well, despite that I'd categorize the Brisbane's Vibram cup sole as overall "better," I want to point out that it is very thick, and it is also a pure white. It leads to a sort of "hipster" look that some may not be comfortable with. Even though the Porter's outsole (which I will note is very supportive) is far less comfortable, far less flexible and far more rigid and will absolutely lengthen a break-in period, it is also thinner and off-white, and lends the style to a lot more versatility in terms of dress. The Brisbane may work very well with dark denim but as far as other things....it can be a little tougher. Even though I literally found the Brisbane *infinitely* more comfortable than the Porter, I found myself wearing the Porter a LOT more often. I guess what I want to say is this. This platform does a lot of things right. If the Porter was close to a good fit but was a little too tight or a little too stiff/rigid and you're primarily interested in comfort rather than looks/versatility, look no further, this is the answer to what you've been looking for. However, if you're after a casual sneaker that you can double as a "casual Friday" work shoe, that you can pair up with khakis or similar (i.e. not just denim and not just on weekends), you may want to try them on in front of a mirror and see how you feel about the thick pure white cup sole. May or may not work for you. Definitely recommended nonetheless. Good to see it back. One last note - while the new lineup definitely had me convinced that AE was getting "smarter" overall about the new styles coming out, discontinuing the walnut weave Porter and immediately releasing a walnut weave Perth...right at Fall/Winter....had me reconsidering a little bit... :)
