Porter Derby Sneaker is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 78.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Conflicted.. I am an owner of many pairs of AE shoes and some of my dress shoes are more comfortable than my bum-around sneakers. It would seem natural that AE would make a great looking sneaker that would be classy and comfortable. These shoes look great, but they remind me every minute of the day that they are there on my feet. I went through 5 pairs of insoles till I found one that fit well. Several types of socks till I found some that work. They look great, but you pay a price. The shoes are heavy and do not breathe. You would not wear them for extended periods outside in the summer. In the office they are great with a casual look. I have a recommendation to AE. Athletic sneaker companies have nailed the whole comfort thing. I am seeing more and more folks in the office wearing dress sneakers from "the names you know", where they started with an athletic shoe and modified for more business casual wear. You need to learn from them. Whatever you did to these shoes have made them way too demanding of your time and energy to wear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent shoes, but can be improved I purchased this pair of shoes with a great deal of trepidation. What others have said about the heel rub is somewhat true, though for me it wasn't as bad after wearing them for about an hour on the first day. The back of the shoe is a bit thick, but the real devil I think is the foam insole. It's so "squishy" that, as you stride and press your foot down on the pavement, your foot will push down on the foam and literally move downward inside the shoe. Then as you pick your foot back up, the foam "bounces" and your foot moves upward. This up and down motion rubs against the tough back of the shoe, causing some complaints with wear. AE can easily fix this by adding more cushion on the back or replace the foam insole with something sturdier. I replaced the insole with something sturdier on the heel (I used an old pair of superfeets). The problem immediately went away, and my feet were no longer rubbing against the back of the shoe. Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase. Everything else about the shoe - the toe room, fit, outsole, design, comfort, quality - is so perfect that I can overlook a fixable heel problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heel blisters until broken in Like many reviewers I really like this shoe but suffered heel rub to the point I had to take them off and use other shoes. I have many pairs of AE shoes, both casual and dress, and this is the first time I've had an issue. After about ten wearings, the problem has mostly taken care of itself, either the shoe broke in or my heel toughened. I suggest putting in a better heel pad if you purchase this shoe.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great quality, sharp & stylish. But fit is a bit wonky (read painful) so design could use some improvements. Personal modifications may help. I wish I could give these shoes a 5 star rating, but I am going to have to go with 3 stars. These shoes are really nice looking (have received compliments) and are very high quality. Great pebbled leather and build quality, great arch support and nice classic styling. Other casual leather sneaker-style shoes (e.g. Fryes) do not have as much substance as these in terms of tread, stitching, support, etc. So nice job AE. However, similar to other reviewers, the overall "fit" for these shoes in practice is a bit wonky. For starters, the rough leather at the heel on the inside and the lack of padding in that area is real murder on the heels. I wore these a number of times at work and was just about ready to ditch them due to this issue- hot spot leading to blisters and not from lack of break-in. A Goodwill donation or eBay was basically what I was thinking as I kept them beyond 90 days grace period. The shoe size was not the issue (note to AE Customer Service). I have worn AE shoes for decades and I know how to fit for size. They felt good in the store, but were just oddly painful after numerous wearings. They just tore at my heels and I was ready to give up. However, I modified them a bit and now I really like them. What I did was add a simple heel pad in the back (the stick-on kind that you get at Walgreens that go up and around the back part of the heel). I also threaded the laces down by one grommet from the top. The pad additions keep the rough leather from rubbing so much and lacing down by one off the top helped keep the shoe from pressing back into the heel. Try this if you are having the heel pain issues that seem to be common. YMMV. These shoes also do require a break-in period. The hard leather band between the leather and the rubber sole is distinctive but needs to loosen up. So give them a chance if initial wearings are disappointing. For a future redesign, suggest that AE pad the back heel area a bit or make the leather smooth like other brands do to keep from tearing into heel. Nice shoes overall, but beware of this issue. Wish I could buy two more pairs in different colors, but having to "customize" these to get them to work has scared me off.

Why won't AE make sneakers in wide sizes?

    Asked by: Scott
The Porter sneakers are designed with a two footbed system. Medium width customers may use the shoes with both insoles in the shoes. Wide width customers may remove the top insole and we have a cushioned footbed cemented in the shoe for flexible fitting. Feel free to contact us again if you have additional questions!
