Overview

Just like our Park Avenues, the Carlyle Hotel has a long history with American presidents. Though this new six-eyelet balmoral hasn't yet achieved the fame of its cap-toed forerunner, its name signifies the fact it has just that kind of potential. Already being called an instant classic, the understated handsewn whipstitching coupled with the burnishing on the toe allow the style's great lines and impeccable calfskin to shine. The 108 last design, which features an elongated, tapered toe, gives this dress shoe just the right amount of attitude making it perfect for the modern executive that is considered a success but still feels like he has something to prove. Finished with a regular welt, single leather sole and regular heel, the Carlyle instills confidence when you walk into any office, oval or otherwise.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Our new Dark Chili and Oxblood burnished leathers can be cleaned using a damp cloth to remove dirt and any residue. Follow by using a soft cloth to apply our Allen Edmonds Saddle Soap which cleans all smooth leather shoes while restoring the leather's natural oils.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Not quite... I am an Allen edmonds fan, have many pairs, BUT, I ordered these and was not wowed, something was amiss, not sure what it was exactly. The shoes had exposed leather around the heel and the toe on both seemed out of shape. Had to return this pair. August 24, 2016
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not What I Thought: Beware of 2nd's Sale I love the style of this shoe and purchased during the 2nd's sale in Walnut finish. I have purchased 2nd's once before in black Park Ave and been very happy. However, this time when I opened the box, one of the shoes had really noticeable streaks in the finish on top of the shoe. I will try to polish it out but don't think it will change the look. I guess it was part of the reason for making it a 2nd. It's too bad as I love the style and color but it is like two totally different shoes. Be very careful when purchasing a 2nd shoe. I cannot wear these to work. Fortunately, I own about ten pairs of AE shoes. Too bad these even cleared quality control to even be considered a 2nd. They should not have been retailed as a 2nd. Bad choice. July 18, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by another excellent shoe I got the Carlyle in bourbon during the seconds sale, and am delighted in the color, style and fit. Comfortable right out of the box and even thought it was sold as a second, it is difficult to figure out why, unless a small spot that looks a bit dark from the finish is the reason. The shoe looks first class all the way. I own a couple shoes from the 5 last, and the 201 last, so I read some reviews and decided to purchase 10 D, the same size I wear from the 5 last. They are a little bit different on my foot than either of the other 2 lasts, but fit closer to the 5 last than the 201 last. I wear a half size smaller with the same width in the 201. Very clean lines and a great color to wear with suits, casual pants or jeans. Thanks again, Allen Edmonds! July 15, 2016
Rated 3 out of 5 by Elegant Simplicity but Spare Support I bought these in the burgundy, which is beautiful with nice variations that goes with just about anything. But the support is spare throughout the shoe, making them uncomfortable if you end up walking a lot. But these are dress shoes with a slim silhouette and aren't really designed for a lot of walking! If I were purchasing another pair of dress shoes, I don't think I'd buy these again before trying on a bunch of others to possibly find better fit/support, but I don't regret the purchase. They are understated and elegant. July 15, 2016

What is the break in period for this shoe? I had mine sized in store and ordered online. I have worn them twice and both times I developed a nasty open blister beneath my right ankle. Will this eventually go away? If not I am very disappointed in my purchase as these are very expensive shoes and due to the blistering are extremely uncomfortable to wear at this point.

Thanks,

Answer:
Thank you for your question. There is no distinct break in period for this shoe, as it all depends on the leather itself. If you condition the leather using a leather lotion, the leather will soften and the rubbing that this is creating should go away. If the problem persists, we can definitely assist further.

Looking for guidance from anyone who may have applied taps and guards previously. I'm thinking a size 4 in the toe and a 5 or 6A in the heel, but recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Answer:
We don't recommend applying metal taps to shoes. In some cases, our Recrafting department can add plastic taps however they do not come in standard sizes for specific styles. They use what fits best without overlapping the edge. Should you have any further questions please contact our customer service team directly at 877-817-7615.

Answer:
Absolutely, we simply recommend adding a high shine with the Carnauba Wax Polish or our new Spray Shine. Tuxedos or formal attire are traditionally worn with shoes that have a glossy or highly polished look.

I am very happy with the look and fit of the Carlyle with one exception. You have eliminated the piping around the edge of the Carlyle. Some of your web page images have the piping and others do not. I just received my second pair of Carlyle's in Black during the sale and they do not have the piping while the screen shot on the individual shoe page shoes the piping. Very disappointed that actual product did not represent the photo. It gives me the perception of lower quality. I would not pay full price without this finishing touch.

Answer:
This new type of binding is not a quality issue, it’s simply a styling difference. The rolled over binding has a dressed up look, but the raw edge (aka Profila Binding) offers more versatility when coordinating with different types of wardrobes. We’re finding that with men’s fashion trends changing where men have the option to dress more casually in office environments, most customers like the versatility a raw edge offers as it makes it easier to dress up or dress down, and coordinates with both a suit or jeans. We use different types of binding depending on the style, but we do offer other dress styles like the Park Avenue, Fifth Avenue, or Strand for example with the dressier binding. We hope that helps.

If you are looking at the same style, the walnut color is the same. It's just a difference in how it's described online.

I have had the Carlyle in black for a year or so and I really like them. I just ordered the Carlyle in oxblood and was surprised to see that the edges are not rolled like they are in black.

I don't know the proper terminology, but I'm talking about the edge of the upper all the way around the opening through to both sides of the eyelet tab. On the oxblood pair, that edge is just the raw cut edge of a piece of leather. On the black pair, that edge has another piece of leather stitched to it and rolled over the top, almost like piping.

I came to the web site to look at the pictures, and the pictures show rolled edges on the black, brown, and chili, but not on the oxblood. (I couldn't quite tell about the walnut.) Why is there a difference in construction for the oxblood?

Answer:
I just realized within the past few days, that the bottom string is likely a sizing string.

As everybody's feet are of different sizes, the string places tension on a key part of the shoe. After some wear, the string will cause a gentle strain on it's holes within the leather, causing the string's tension to become subdued over time. Hence the shoe will then fit the wearer more fitting over time.

Answer:
This is called a 'bar tack' and it's a stitch used for reinforcing areas of stress during manufacturing. It can be removed but keep in mind, the stitch holes will be visible.
