Overview

Why It's Great

One of the first styles reintroduced in the Timeless Classics Collection, the Strand is a perennial favorite thanks to its classic yet contemporary design. A shoe that effortlessly conveys an air of refined elegance, the Strand is a stand out for its impressive perforations, striking medallion on the cap toe and fully leather-lined upper. Versatile enough to wear with suits or jeans, the strand is a Timeless Classic with an emphasis on timeless.

How It's Made

Made on the favorite 65 Last with elaborate perforations, calfskin leather, brogue styling, and trademark cap-toe medallion, you know a Strand when you see one. With the wide selection of ways to customize it, from leather to sole, there’s a Strand for every man. Throw in the array of colors, from the best-selling Walnut, to the classic Black, and stylish Oxblood, there’s a reason most Strand owners don’t stop at just one pair.

How to Wear It

A Strand man is refined and classic, but is also not afraid to let his personality show through his footwear. Strands are versatile and comfortable enough to be worn with most items in your wardrobe, dressed down with jeans on the weekend, or with a suit for the boardroom meeting on Monday. And speaking of classic pairings, it was made for our Manistee belt with coordinating colors to fully complete your ensemble. Be prepared for complements – lots of them.

Product Care

Allen Edmonds Shoe Care

When caring for your calfskin, use Allen Edmonds Leather Lotion to remove surface residue and to keep leather soft and pliable. To achieve a fine luster, wipe shoes with a damp cloth and allow them to air dry at room temperature. Then, apply a coat of Allen Edmonds Premium Shoe Polish with a cloth or horsehair dauber and allow to air dry.

Reviews
Strand Cap-toe Oxford with Dainite Rubber Sole is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A legend for a reason... I've owned a number of AE shoes-- off the top of my head, mostly boots... two First Aves, three Daltons, Liverpools, McAllisters, and Cornwallis's. Because I am a notorious AE 'deal hunter,' I tend to get shoes as seconds or during the Rediscover America sale, which doesn't typically include the Strand (presumably because it is probably their most popular shoe). So, for my wedding day, I broke down and bought a pair of oxblood Strands with Dainite sole. I chose this color because I needed something between the casual-ness of walnut and the formality of black. I need easy confidence, not stuffy try-hard. Oxblood has just the right amount of depth for a suit, but also works great with a pair of dark blue or even black jeans. I went with the Dainite because the sales rep talked me into it-- he smartly suggested that it will extend the life of the soles and would blend in better with oxblood than with the lighter colors on offer.. plus we are in the Northeast (which is why I own so many boots). It also gives me a little bit more height, which in the world of business is never a bad thing. The 65 last is great. I thought I loved the 201 on my First Aves but the 201 actually pinches my heel and pinky toe the tiniest bit, although the cone is perfect. The 65 is the opposite, it fits great but squeezes the cone a tiny bit. Be aware that the last tends to break in two places: one just below the cap perf, and the usual spot just above it or right on it. For this reason I've found that a split toe shoe tree works better for this last, at least in my size (9B), because it penetrates into the toe a bit more and helps smooth out the cap. When it's all said and done the Strand is AE's flagship shoe for a reason. It shows that I am serious but not extravagant, classic but not stale, traditional yet explorative. It exudes easy leadership. I haven't found that with any other shoe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for black tie affairs I purchased these shoes for my own wedding day, and have found them to be the perfect shoe for a formal event. The only downside I see, is that they seem to need breaking in. Found them rather snug at first. However, I'm sure they will last me decades as I only wear them for black tie occasions. Looking forward to having them recrafted with a custom sole for enhanced comfort.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Well made shoe not comfortable These shoes are very well constructed and I appreciate the craftsmanship. I was fitted for a 9.5 E at the Atlanta Store and these shoes were very painful after a days wear. I have never had to wear a EEE (wide) shoe and I returned them for the 9.5 EEE and they are slightly better but still tight and not comfortable at all. The Strand Cap-toe Oxfords with Dainite Rubber Sole have a very narrow toe box even after the widest width was selected. Also, I highly recommend an insert as these shoes are not comfortable without the insoles. Without the insoles, these shoes are very hard inside with no cushioning whatsoever. I am not sure if I should return them or see if they stretch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of Compliments I typically like a simpler style like a plain cap toe but decided to get a pair of these in walnut with dainite soles for more casual wear and I have to say I get more unsolicited compliments on these than any of my other nice AE shoes. They appear more professional in reality than flashy like I thought they might be. Very glad I made the jump, they are quickly becoming some of my favorite shoes. Also great that they are in the classic 5 last which fits me like a glove!

Yes, the Strand is eligible for Recrafting and a sole conversion. Keep in mind we do offer the Strand with a leather sole if that's what you're looking for. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

Is the insole removable?

I'm curious if this insole is removable. The LGA wingtip mentions "Removable, quality, heel-cup footbed to allow for custom inserts" but the Strand does not specify. I would be interested in adding orthotics or Superfeet inserts.
Asked by: 3gr3gious
Nope, I would not try to add Supperfeet insoles to Strands, they would not fit.

Is the Dainite sole a lot more "flexible" than the leather sole? If so, will creases develop more easily (and faster)?

Asked by: Will17
I own two pairs of AE with Dainite soles. What I found was that Dainite is initially stiffer. I hand bend the front of the soles before wearing to speed up the process. However, the Dainite material helps the uppers and the toe box maintain it's shape much better than leather soles. Dainite is more durable than leather soles. And, Dainite is less slippery than leather and can be worn in wet weather without damaging the soles.

What is the weight of this shoe?

Asked by: Seagull4
Allen Edmonds dress shoes generally weigh between 3 and 4 lbs. when shipped. Shoe weight will vary depending on the size and width of a shoe; however, these variations will be fairly insignificant. Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

Which is the best sole

It appears there are three soles for the Strand: leather, tap, and rubber. Which is the most comfortable? What is the intended use for the rubber sole strand? Does the rubber sole Strand have a noticeable different appearance than the leather sole strand, while being worn with a suit?
Asked by: Mel
Leather has the most traditional feel, as you might expect. The Dainite (rubber) sole will do you better, perhaps, if you spend a lot of time walking outdoors or in harsher conditions and you wish to preserve your soles; I suspect they'll better help if you needed to make a full-on sprint with the extra grip. No experience with the tap sole, so I cannot comment on those.

Is the dainite rubber sole more comfortable than than the leather sole? It's because I find the leather sole to be quite uncomfortable.

Asked by: JR
I think it is. It's a little more flexible from the start, and there really isn't any break-in period. Plus it gives a bit more cushion than a leather sole. Thumbs up from me.
