Rated 4 out of 5 by from Effective polish for shell cordovan If you own any shell cordovan, you know that polish doesn't really stick to it very well, if at all. Allen Edmonds' cordovan polish is the only one I've tried so far that overcomes this effectively. Specifically I had trouble with some color loss in the flex point on a pair of very old shell cordovan shoes. I tried regular shoe cream, wax paste, and Saphir's specially formulated polish for shell cordovan. Out of those the Saphir worked best, but after a certain number of hours of wear and walking even the Saphir would slowly flake right off. So I tried Allen Edmonds polish. At $8 it wasn't much of a gamble, so why not? The AE polish succeeds at sticking to the shell cordovan by being - you guessed it - sticky! This is a double edged sword however as it can be difficult to spread and leave streaks where the polish became stuck on extra thickly. These streaks weren't noticeable indoors, but became apparent once in direct sunlight. So careful application of a bare minimum of polish is important with this product. After applying, I would recommend buffing with a cloth instead of a brush. The polish is thick and sticky enough that it might gunk up a horse hair brush (don't ask how I figured this out). The shine it produces is quite nice. It seems maybe shinier than regular shoe cream but not a super glossy shine like wax paste. The polish is a fairly purplish color, which isn't exactly a great match for Color 8 cordovan, but a thin coat seemed to enhance the color of the shoe (an old Florsheim) without altering it much. Overall not perfect, but a very good product that I would recommend especially if you want to darken some faded shoes or cover up some areas of color loss.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effective for Chromexcel Too! I know that this is intended for shell cordovan, but as a last resort, I used it to polish a deep scratch on my burgundy chromexcel bag. This worked incredibly well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from concerned about this product This cream worked just fine on a pair of AE shell cordovan shoes. When I tried to use it on an AE shell cordovan wallet....terrible results.Would hardly rub off. The wallet looks worse than when I started. Worried about trying it on an AE shell cordovan belt now.

I have a pair of Cambridge in burgundy but the Burgundy Cordovan creme is a lot darker than the color of my shoes. Do you offer a more reddish cordovan cream or a neutral?

Shoe Cream vs. Cordovan Shoe Cream

How is the cordovan care cream different from the shoe cream? I recently purchased the normal shoe cream for use on my AE cordovan shoes. Am I fine using the shoe cream I have on my shoes then replacing with cordovan care cream later, or am I best advised to purchase the cordovan care cream immediately and discarding of the normal shoe cream?
Asked by: Phillip
Sure. But best results come with the right stuff. Try saddle soap occasionally. Using AE cordovan cream on cordovans is going to bring satisfaction and make polishing cordovans easier. I use a little creme and move the applicator until dry enough to brush. AE horsehair brushes complete the story. I use two brushes for best shine, and I clean them in soap and water frequently.

Burgundy Cordovan Cream

In your previous answers you say you have the Cordovan Cream in Black, Brown and Burgundy. But, when I go to order the Burgundy Cream for my Dalton Cordovan Boots, there is no Burgundy to order. Are you out of this or do you no longer sell this color cream?
Asked by: TommyTooTone
They sure have it in stock now and it’s on sale. Stock up.

If the cordovan shoes get wet, how should I do?

Asked by: Anonymous
Shells are a completely different animal (pun intended). After polishing, and despite seeing the clouds outside, I excitedly couldn’t help but take them out for a test drive. And lo and behold it started to sprinkle and yes, my Shells were struck with just a few drips of rain. (And yes I did my research and knew better.) The few water drops caused the shine to temporality dull or disappear where the drops landed. Repolishing after drying remedies the issue. Yes it’s a downside to these unique and wonderful shoes.

Can you explain what is the main difference between cordovan shell and calf skin-finished leather shoes -why would one pay more?

Asked by: Mr G
Like you, at first I scoffed at buying a pair of Shell Cordovans. I said something like…“Since the quality of Allen Edmonds leather shoes are touted so much, how much better can their Shell’s be?” Well, the Shells are fantastic. As to the inside of the shoes, they are like a well-appointed living room with extra stitching and softer leathers. And after polishing, the shoes look jaw dropping great. The Shell’s shine has a richness and depth like no other shoe I’ve seen.

Do you let the cream dry?

I recently used this cream on a pair of cordovan boots, and I found it difficult to buff off the cream once it had dried. Was I supposed to let the cream dry or should I have polished it off when it was still wet? Is it possible that too much product was used?
Asked by: TMiller
I usually let it dry for about 15 minutes and then brush off without a problem. Maybe you let it dry for too long?
