Allen Edmonds has built men's penny loafers in Port Washington, Wisconsin since 1922, applying over a century of American shoemaking expertise to one of menswear's most enduring silhouettes. The collection spans multiple constructions, leathers, and profiles, from polished dress styles to relaxed suede options. Each pair reflects the same commitment to craft, quality, and precision fit that has defined the brand for over 100 years.

Penny Loafer Construction Methods

Allen Edmonds penny loafers feature several distinct construction methods, each chosen to serve a specific balance of structure, flexibility, and durability. Some styles use 360° Goodyear bench welt construction, which stitches the upper, welt, and sole together for long-term resolability and stability. Other styles use Bologna construction, a traditional Italian technique where the leather upper wraps entirely around the foot. The result is a glove-like fit with a lighter, more flexible profile. The collection also includes traditional moccasin construction for a similar wrapped fit with added pliancy, as well as handsewn construction for a relaxed feel. Select styles, such as the Randolph Verse and the Miller Reserve, can be recrafted by Allen Edmonds' own craftsmen in Port Washington.

Premium Leathers Used in Allen Edmonds Penny Loafers

Allen Edmonds sources its penny loafer uppers from some of the world's most respected tanneries. Premium European calfskin leather provides the refined finish seen across most of the collection. Select styles are offered in museum calfskin, a hand-dyed leather known for its deep, tonal color range and rich polish. For exceptional durability and a distinctive patina that develops over time, Allen Edmonds offers penny loafers in shell cordovan leather, sourced from Chicago's famed Horween® tannery. Some of our penny loafers are also available in premium suede and genuine crocodile.

Why Men Choose Penny Loafers as a Dress Shoe

The penny loafer's slip-on design makes it one of the most versatile dress shoes in a man's rotation. Its clean profile works across a wide range of settings without the formality of a laced oxford or the casualness of a moccasin, fitting naturally in both business environments and more relaxed occasions. Some Allen Edmonds penny loafers are built with CustomCork™ insoles and responsive foam or Poron® cushioning systems. Comfort improves with wear as the footbed conforms to the shape of the foot. That combination of adaptable style and lasting comfort is what keeps the penny loafer a fixture in American men's footwear.
